I recently got a served a TikTok from an influencer who claimed I must follow them to learn how to prevent ‘clitoris cheese’ (that part isn’t my question I have read the faq about washing yourself, you know, normally). Are sex education grifters a common thing? Do you run across them regularly in your research and just filter them out? Or is this a new horror for the modern age (TikTok specifically)
uuuuh yeah I would say that people profiting off of peddling bad/misleading/stigmatizing information about sex have existed for approximately as long as humans have been having sex
I mean. Goop is a multi million dollar company built on Gwyneth Paltrow telling people to shove jade eggs in their vaginas. you can buy vaginal douching products, which virtually every gynecologist will tell you are a bad idea, in drugstores. my entire motivation for becoming a sex educator was realizing that my country's sex education system isn't even helpful for cisgender straight kids, the people who it's most designed for. sexual misinformation is so normalized as to be entirely unremarkable and tiktok didn't even remotely invent that.
