Arrow Music Rant

Just a quick note about the continual brilliance of Blake Neely and his music for Arrow.

Season 5 soundtrack, “Never Say Never.” I absolutely love how Blake Neely builds the piece slowly. you can tell it is an Oliver and Felicity track because of the instrumentation, but it’s not until about a minute in that you hear a semblance of their theme. The background of their theme is the main component of the piece at first. When Blake Neely brings in the melody of the theme, he starts by highlighting it with the outline of the melodic phrases (almost starting a phrase and leaving out some of the inner notes of the melody). Through something as simple as this, he is able to communicate the tentative nature of Oliver and Felicity’s relationship at this point in time. By the end of the piece, he brings the full melody in, as if to signify that ultimately, their relationship is strong and will survive.

Blake Neely wins the SupergirlxFlash crossover musical with his seamless transition from Barry singing “Running Home to You” to the oboe playing Barry&Iris’ theme. He changed the end of the phrases in their theme so that it more closely mirrored the tune that Barry had just finished singing and it is SO BEAUTIFUL!!

I always think that watching Buffy is going to be a fun, carefree thing and then Joss Whedon creates an episode on domestic abuse. But it still seems relatively light because it has the whole supernatural element of the boyfriend going all Hulk-like when he gets mad and that doesn’t feel too real.

But then you realize what Joss Whedon is doing by essentially paralleling the abusive relationship with that of Willow and Oz and that of Buffy and Angel. On one hand you have Oz who turns into a werewolf, but never actually hurts anyone. Then on the other hand you have Angel who has just come back from a hell dimension and is now kinda animalistic even though he has his soul now. And it seems ok because Buffy still loves him, but then you remember all the terrible things he did to her as Angelus and you’re left wondering if their relationship is actually better than the abusive relationship.

At one point Buffy tells the other girl, “Anybody who really loved you couldn’t do this to you.” And now I’m questioning my support of the BuffyxAngel relationship.

Damnit Joss Whedon!!
