Homophobia
I always thought homophobia never really had that big of an impact on me. Iāve been closeted for 5 years, and I always explained to myself that I just was too scared to do it yet, that all the horror stories on the internet had scared me away from doing it. But recently I thought more about all the things Iāve heard and seen and how itās effected me and giving me quite the case of internal homophobia. I live in a tiny town full of white conservatives, my school (Grades 4-12) had 200 kids. My graduating class had 21 kids, half of which Iāve known since Kindergarten. The problem with small towns is that when something changes in your life, it is everybodyās business, every relationship, every fight, every job, everyone, adults and teens alike, want to know what the latest thing is. We have only had three openly gay people in our town (though we have had several more closeted), and none of them were accepted positively. They were the topic of the biggest dirty gossip and victim to constant hate. I never thought homophobia had that big of an impact on me, until I remembered all the thingās Iāve heard friends and family say, and all the thoughtās Iāve kept to myself.
āI heard that she spies on the girls in the change room. Thatās so gross! Iād change in the bathroom stall if I was in her class.āĀ
(She heard you say that and she looked so sad, how could you say that about another person?)
āSheās kind of messed up yeah,ā
(Maybe sheās just upset cause people keep calling her messed up)
āI donāt understand how she could possibly know that so young, she is too young to make that judgment.ā
(Kidās know their straight. This isnāt different. And sheās allowed to explore, sheās allowed to try and discover herself without everyone dissecting her. Sheās allowed to be wrong and change her mind. Sheās 14. Sheās allowed to be herself for gods sake)
āDonāt be a fagāĀ āFaggotāĀ āWhat you a fag?āĀ āFagāĀ āFagāĀ āFagā
(Shut up, donāt sat that word)
āIt sucks I really liked his books until he made that character gay, thatās disgusting and I canāt read them anymore. Itās just wrong.ā
(I donāt think youād want to be my friend anymore then if you knew the truth. I donāt think I want to be your friend anymore either to be honest.)
āIām glad no one in our class is a fag, could you imagine?ā
(Your wrong, there is one. And yet nothing is different. Would you treat me differently if I told you?)
āDo you support the gays?āĀ āNoā
(Youāre my best friend, you know Iām gay, yet you still said no? In front of me? How could you?)
āI bet the other volleyball team wouldnāt be so impressed by all her hickeys if they knew a girl gave them to herāĀ āHahahaā
(Donāt talk about them like that)
āItās just not natural. Just be the gender your assigned.ā
(Let them live their best life. Stop harassing them, you donāt know anything. About them. Their life. What theyāve gone through. Educate yourself.)
āif they were fighting for equality I could support them but all they want is special treatment!ā
(They are fighting for equality your just too dumb to recognize your own privilege)
āThey can be gay if they want but I donāt want to see it, all I see on the TV and the news and even in fucking shopping malls is all this rainbow shit and I donāt want to see it anymoreā
(You donāt understand. Would you think differently if you knew how happy all thatĀ ārainbow shitā makes your own daughter? Your pretending to be an ally but your not)
āI mean yeah some peoples brain chemistry just makes them the gender their not assigned at birth, but not all these people are transgender, most of them are just faking it for attention or their confused or something.ā
(Theyāre not confused or faking, they donāt need your invalidation. The reason your seeing more trans people now is because theyāre trying to normalize it and the world is slowly becoming more welcoming so theyāre being brave by being themself.)
āGod all you see on TV now is fucking fags. Just show me normal stuff I donāt want to watch that.ā
(If you knew your gay daughter is right here you wouldnāt be saying that, but you would be thinking that. And I love seeing representation on the TV, but at least itās good to know you donāt)
āWhy do they get a special day and parade and shit. Can you imagine the uproar if we had a straight parade? Weāre not fighting for one though. Theyāre just begging for attention.ā
(The reason you donāt have a straight parade is because youāve never been oppressed. Youāve never been murdered, raped, assaulted, yelled at, illegal, or hurt for being straight.)Ā
People have never said anything directly to me, but they also donāt know how strongly I disagree with them. They donāt know how my stomach drops and my heart aches every time I hear these things. They donāt know how Iām terrified to come out to my parents because our relationship is so good right now and I donāt want to damage that. They donāt know how happy it makes me every pride month with the stupid rainbows everywhere, I know theyāre just a marketing scheme but god they make me so happy. They donāt see my eyes light up every time I see a gay couple on TV cause even though sometimes the representation is bad, at least itās progress. They donāt know how I look up videos of pride parades and imagine myself there, and promise myselfĀ āsome dayā. They donāt know how I look at empty space on my walls and thinkĀ āthat would be the perfect place for a pride flagā. They donāt see me linger at the pride items in hot topic for just a little longer than anywhere else, yet never buy anything. They donāt see the plethora of gay memes in my Instagram for you page. They donāt see me smile proudly and a little sadly at any out gay person, they donāt know how much I wish I was them. They donāt see these things. They donāt know these things. Because if they did, I would not be treated as well as I am now.
I never thought I had internalized homophobia until I realized how wrong I feel when I think about how I like girls. How I feel like Iām breaking the law every time I see a lesbian couple online. How every time I see an out couple I feel so overwhelmingly proud, but I also hear the words said behind their back and I canāt help but feel like Iām the smart one for hiding. How I could probably hide forever if I never date a girl. How I donāt want to have to hide. I donāt have a good way to end this. Honestly this is just a massive vent and Iām not happy with this but I wanted to get these thought out of my head.Ā
