this post is a fucking train wreck
Wait, some nuns of the order of St. Claire in Orduña have been asking the bishop for a licence to sell their pastries at the Derio monastery for 10 years, to no avail.
And they're so fed up they have officially rejected the Pope, archbishops, and bishops, and are now creating a schism inside their order because they're gonna sell those fucking pastries whether they like it or not.
WTF is this fantasy!!!!!
Okay, update.
The Orduña nuns want to be able to legally sell their products to keep their monastery up and running.
They suspect the higher ranks are keeping them without a license on purpose so the monastery has to close down - the nuns be relocated - so the Church can sell it to private companies to turn it into a hotel or use its land. The nuns say this modus operandi has been used in several now-closed monasteries not far from theirs.
They're ready to face excommunion to survive so if that's the actual case, I'm with the nuns.
IMPORTANT, SECOND UPDATE.
I've been waiting some days to update this because infos have been contradictory all this week. This isn't as bucolic and anticapitalist as it first seemed, so it'd be nice that this updated version of the post gets reblogged too.
These nuns wanted not only to sell their products, they seemingly wanted to sell the whole monastery of Derio to buy the monastery of Orduña from the Church.
The price was 1.2M€, but the first payment was never made: the nuns couldn't afford it, but they assured the Church they had an anonymous benefactor that would effectively pay for it, and then register the monastery to the nuns and the benefactor themselves.
This last clause was considered sketchy by the Church since nobody knew who that benefactor was, and they withdrew from the selling agreement. The nuns sued for damages asking for 1.3M€.
The Church had some suspicions regarding the identity of this white knight. They thought it was a guy called Pablo de Rojas, who, in a nutshell, is the leader of a tiny cult inside the Catholic Church called "Pía unión de San Andrés" that defends going back to the old lithurgic ways, that there hasn't been a legal Pope since the 50s, that the Catholic Church is too progressive, and that Francoism was amazing. He's also a relative of the nuns' abess.
There's still no confirmation of the benefactor's identity.
The most plausible theory, though, is that Pablo de Rojas somehow convinced the abess to join his cult and bring her nuns with her; the second part of the plan was to buy the monastery to accommodate said cult and followers.
Not all nuns agreed, though. One of them at least immediately left them and went back to St. Claire's order to be relocated. Some nuns of the order from Gasteiz have sued the cultist nuns and reclaimed the ownership of both monasteries for their order since the cultist have publicly rejected the Catholic church.
What a HBO documentary we will have in a few years time!!
I forgot to mention that Pablo de Rojas guy calls himself a bishop although he was formally excommunicated in 2019. He was ordained by a dude that ended up being the first leader of the cult known as Palmarian Christian Church, located in Andalusia.
I swear to you, this shit is as bizarre as it can get.
Pablo de Rojas grandfather was a francoist governor in Andalusia, and his family have big investments in Euskadi real state in recent years. Also he claims to be a prince elector of the Holy Roman Empire and Imperial duke, and supports one of the carlist heirs as king of Spain.
According to the news, he lives in Bilbao.
Yes, he was born into a wealthy family in Jaén (Andalusia) but lives in a +800sqm luxury apartment in the main street of downtown Bilbo.
The dude looks like this if anyone's interested:
He uses the royal we when he speaks, btw.
If this was a movie this would be too camp to be good.
News of the day: the cultist nuns have been sued for running an unlicensed dog breeding center.
I keep updating the drama of the year, season 9:
Today the Archbishop of Burgos has officially become in charge of the cultist nuns' convent by order of the Pope. The Archbishop has banned the entrance and stay of cult leader Pablo de Rojas in the convent, or in the convents of Orduña and Derio.
The nuns now face an ultimatum: with the Church or they'll be kicked to the curb.
While they decide, the Church now fear that since they can't sell the convent to buy the one in Orduña for their cult and have been sued due to the illegal breeding center, the cultists may want to get money by selling the convent's paintings and antiques which legally belong to the Church.
Stay tuned for the next chapter.
BREAKING: Pablo de Rojas has stated that the cult doesn't recognize neither the Pope nor the Archbishop, and that the nuns and himself will remain at the convent.
They all are now officially squatters.
Alright my babies, I know you're hooked on this. I'll serve you the latest news:
From previous episodes we know that the Archbishop was now in charge of the convent, right? And in charge of the bank accounts associated to it, which are now legally owned by the archbishopric. The cultist nuns were like 👁️👄👁️ when they discovered this and said on Insta that their money and donations recieved have been "usurped".
Well, the archbishop sent the new legal manager of the convent over there and what did our beloved sisters do?
"Come back with a warrant 🖕" - they said, and called the fucking Guardia Civil to shake him off.
The Archbishop left the diplomatic path: the cultist nuns have been given two days to hand a set of keys of the convent so the manager can get in. Deadline? TOMORROW (June 9th).
The nuns repeat they don't recognize the Archbishop and accuse him of wanting their convent just to sell it and get money - remember the nuns wanted to sell it to buy another convent, so...?
If they insist on their cultist ways they'll be excommunicated in 10 days, following canon law.
And as for common law, if they fail to hand the keys, the legal process to evict them will start.
**also!!! see that man on the pic with them?? He dresses up as a priest because he's not! He's their spokeperson, childhood friend of Pablo de Rojas, and master bartender winner of several bartending contests:
This post has exploded and it's quite hard to follow all the tags and comments, but two quick notes:
the 15 nuns aren't all Basque (I don't know where they're from actually), neither De Rojas nor the bartending fake priest. The convents of Derio and Orduña happen to be located in the Basque Country but most of these people aren't Basque. They could've been, no problem with that, but just stating the facts.
there are some doubts about this story being possibly fake or not fact-checked, and I completely understand why, but guys you're giving my imagination too much credit. If I could create this story from scratch I swear I wouldn't be on Tumblr but counting the billions my successful writing career had granted me.
That said.
NEW JUICE.
Because who watched last night's special report on this and is ready to feed your hunger? 🙋♀️
remember how villain mastermind Pablo de Rojas' grandpa was a civil governor during the Franco dictatorship and that's why he's a francoist?? Yeah? Well, he wasn't. Grandpa owned a jewelry shop. All those aristocratic surnames he has? He doesn't, all fake. He even faked a photo with Franco's daughter to say that she supported his cult. She didn't.
Oh, and that lavish staircase he vogued on his Bilbo appartment? It's the London Ritz Hotel. Yeah, his luxury 800sqm flat is a private museum that belongs to an antique collector that rents it for movies or spots. Pablo de Rojas rented it for his first interview and said it was his house.
The bartending fake priest? He has debts with the IRS and a partner he would run a night bar with. He's not a priest, and the document stating that he is has been proven a forgery that uses the name of an actual public notary that had no idea the paper existed.
The cult Pía Unión de San Pablo - not Andrés as I wrote - is just them two. There are no properties or any other leader. Just our two guys.
And now our sweet nuns! Their only problem was not being good at business. They make truffles - and would sell them to luxury restaurants - at 58€/kg. They also run a puppy mill, 800€ a pup. They had an illegal rural hotel inside the Derio monastery lands - +500€/night - that the town council shut down. They then opened a hostelry to rent, and they rented it to people that would go party there during Covid lockdown; they also had to shut it down when this became public. All these businesses didn't give enough profit.
But they had a plan: they would sell the rural hotel in Derio for 4M and buy the Orduña monastery for 1.2M. This monastery is rated at +4M and belongs to other nuns, but if you sell below 1.5M you don't need Rome's permission for the operation *wink, wink*.
Problem is that when it came the time to pay, the rural hotel was still on sale. So they put a mortgage on it and got 700,000€ for the first buying payment which - we already know - they never made. Where's that money? Welp...... who knows 💁♀️
The abbess - who has been in charge for 12 years and had to leave her post last May btw - had another plan. She contacted her distant relative Pablo de Rojas because he's so wealthy (he's not) and he was more than happy to help. If all went well, he could get two monasteries to his name (+10M total in real estate). So this show began.
Nope, they didn't hand the keys.
Instead, they went to a police station at night to accuse the archbishop of abuse and harassment.
Pablo de Rojas has said that the nuns will have to be rebaptised, and regiven their communion and confirmation because since all Church members are illegitimate the nuns aren't actually nuns?
The archbishop has now ordered the nuns to go to a church court to hear them one by one on June 24th, to decide if excommunication can be applied (there can't be a group excommunication, that's why the hearing will take place), but the nuns have already said they won't show up.
The Church wants to be patient and will wait to this trial before starting the eviction process: if they're excommunicated, then yes, they'll be evicted.

Man with a cat hat - reading with a cat (BnF, lat. 1393, early 16th c.)
Loving cats is universal. However, not everyone has a hat specially made for the occasion, like this medieval reader. Such entertaining marginal scenes are quite common in medieval books. This cat scene was likely meant to bring a smile to the beholder’s face. Mission accomplished!
Tomska going hard on Twitter again.
My Twitter account once got suspended because I replied to a guy with this meme and they said it was a death threat.
Meanwhile on Tumblr, I can openly fantasize about how much I'd like to see Boris Johnson get hit by a bus, and nobody bats an eye.
This is why I roll my eyes when someone says they got "death threats online"
Because okay, did someone give a credible and motivated threat to your well being? Or did someone send you a shitty photoshopped jpeg compressed image of an anime girl with a gun?
Really confused as to how my logo changed to kermit the frog. Unless im starting to have hallucinations from lack of sleep. Still. mindfucked.
I found someone’s tumblr logged in on this computer and all I did was change the icon

I’m a simple creature.

Remember that time "cult expert" Steven Hassan not only repeated common transphobic talking points but also claimed fucking sissy hypno porn was literal and legit mind control that would actually turn people trans out of nowhere and that he had to keep his finger over the pause button because he could feel himself being influenced by it as he listened?
Dude, you say you studied hypnosis. You should know it does not work like that. If you think sissy hypno almost made you trans then you probably should be investigating that and talking to someone.
Best self-care tips for writers!
🔹 Drink plenty of water (not just coffee or tea). 🔹 Don't compare yourself to other writers. 🔹 Take regular breaks. 🔹 Take time to read for fun. 🔹 Write something just because you enjoy it! 🔹 Set realistic, achievable goals.
sometimes I think the entire point of writing – of heartfelt, nuanced, fucking true writing – is that it allows the audience to point to a piece of art and say “that. that is how I felt. all those complex, jumbled, overlapping, contradictory emotions. that is how I felt to live it.”
the point of writing is to distill human emotion into something we can identify with, to use thousands of words (or 28 pages for one real-time scene that grabs you and doesn’t let go) to illustrate what a single-syllable word like ‘grief’ can never fully explain. and when it is done well, it is the single most human thing that humans ever can or ever will accomplish.

@neil-gaiman you're a saint
i want to clarify a few things, because i've received a handful of questions in response to this meme and people seem unhappy with how i'm answering!!!!!
first, Neil is a saint specifically for how patiently he answers this shit and i never claimed to also be a saint!!!!! but more importantly:
unlike Neil Gaiman, i do not have a gender, so when you insist to me that gender can't just not apply or that there's nothing queer about not having a gender, you're actually being
✨️🏳️🌈directly bigoted toward me!!!!!🏳️🌈✨️
so if you're mad, my little chili babies, that i did not hold your hand through a gentle explanation like a kindergarten teacher, know that i am not fucking obligated to when your very question invalidates my existence!!!!!
now. since i would actually like people to understand, i think where people are getting stuck is the
core concept of the word queer.
so here is a very quick breakdown of what that word means to me.
queer isn't a box. it isn’t a label the way the other letters are labels. it's not a synonym for "LGBT+" or "gay" or anything. queer is a word that specifically evokes the nuance of identity.
heaven and hell in good omens, for all their flaws, are a queernormative soceity. in this society, gender is treated less as a box that you fall into when you're born, or even a box you get to choose, but rather as a buffet table. you walk over and decide which pronouns you want (if any), which identity label (if any), how you want to present.
in a world like this, any other labels become extremely nebulous. what is straight, what is gay, what is trans, when gender is a mosaic? when you deconstruct the very concept of gender, it queers everything. when you build a world where the concept of gender is this expansive, you can't shrink the characters down into the boxes our culture uses!!!!!
(now, when queerness is the norm, people within the society likely won't consider individual relationships queer [as many others have pointed out, from heaven and hell's pov, the angel and demon thing is a lot queerer than the both-mostly-appearing-masc thing], but remember we're watching and understanding through an earth 2023 lens and if we're going to talk about it it's going to be in the language our culture uses for such things, because that's how language and communication works. i've read and discussed a lot of fiction that takes place in queernormative settings but i think this is the first time anyone has demanded that i defend my "choice" to consider the relationships within the setting queer.)
you like memes? okay!!!!! queer means:
queer means
queer means
queer means
and i don't have to add or change anything about those last two because that's the point. queer means this entire concept is too big for my tiny human brain!!!!! queer means none of us are using these words in the exact same way. none of us are thinking about gender and sexuality in the exact same way and that's the point!!!!! we shouldn't be!!!!! IT'S NUANCED!!!!!
queer says the boxes aren't always big enough, or small enough, or flexible or permeable enough or close enough to another box you wanna stick a limb into once in a while so let's destroy them and let everyone make their own beautiful artwork to tell us who they are!!!!! we'll keep the labelmaker around for those who like the labels and want to add them but no one is obligated!!!!!
i think the final thing the fans who haven't been alive for as long as Neil and Terry have been writing queer characters aren't understanding is that this book came out in 1990 and THIS WAS NOT DONE IN 1990. THIS WAS GROUNDBREAKING.
YES, THIS MOMENT IS DIRECTLY FROM THE BOOK AND IT'S A HUGE DEAL.
to have a main character - a protagonist - in a book that isn't specifically, explicitly, and exclusively being marketed to The Gays™️ proudly declare himself THE Southern Pansy, simply was not something authors did!!!!! and it especially wasn't something authors who were then going to get mad that people read their characters as queer did!!!!! this was the height of the AIDS epidemic, y'all!!!!!
"but it was a joke" yes!!!!! a positive joke!!!!! an affirming joke!!!!! it's not even a little bit at our expense!!!!!
Aziraphale said oh no i'm not just gay i'm the fucking platonic form of queerness in nineteen fucking ninety and people are frothing because Neil won't use the word you want him to!!!!! and if you don’t think they read like a couple please read some Discworld and get back to me!!!!!
read other queernormative worlds and other older fiction where the queerness could only exist as subtext and try to understand the immense privilege you have had to grow up queer in a world that allows you to look at some of the best representation i've seen in my 36 years and declare it not queer enough for you!!!!!
i fucking forgot the most important part of this post
because you wanna know what queerness is?????

One of my favourite bits of media history trivia is that back in the Elizabethan period, people used to publish unauthorised copies of plays by sending someone who was good with shorthand to discretely write down all of the play's dialogue while they watched it, then reconstructing the play by combining those notes with audience interviews to recover the stage directions; in some cases, these unauthorised copies are the only record of a given play that survives to the present day. It's one of my favourites for two reasons:
It demonstrates that piracy has always lay at the heart of media preservation; and
Imagine being the 1603 equivalent of the guy with the cell phone camera in the movie theatre, furtively scribbling down notes in a little book and hoping Shakespeare himself doesn't catch you.
I feel obligated to point out that as far as I know, this is a theory, but one that early modern theatre scholars debate very hotly over whether it's true.
I'm no scholar of early modern theatre and it's entirely possible there's primary sources I don't know about which lend stronger evidence to this idea than I am aware of, but my understanding has always been that this theory basically cropped up less as a "known fact" and more a plausible but unproven hypothesis to explain away why there exist manuscripts- especially and specifically of Shakespeare's plays, which have historically attracted far more attention than other playwrights of the era- which differ obviously from more "legitimate" records (quotes intentional), such as the first folio in Shakespeare's case.
This sits alongside the "memorial reconstructions" theory (that "inferior" or "inadequate" texts for these plays are not down to audience piracy but due to actors attempting to recall from memory the plays and these remembrances being transcribed). This is one hypothesis I've seen for why Macbeth is shorter than some plays runtime-wise and seemingly has cut scenes in the text we have, that the text we have is based on the inevitably edited staged performances and not an actual manuscript. This theory is also super contentious! (I feel more confident calling this one straight-up debated, I've never seen any work that doesn't point out people argue about it, even the work which subscribes to the theory.)
Most discussions of "pirate" manuscripts I've seen in scholarship around early modern theatre are hypothesizing about literal copying or theft- the possibility of actors especially straight up stealing papers with their or other actors' lines on for reproduction. I am extremely open to being corrected on this matter regarding the lack of primary sources- again, everything I know on this topic is purely as an enthusiastic amateur, and I would love to know if there are in fact primary sources for this as a practice in early modern theatre I just don't know about because I don't have the academic access. But everything I've ever read suggests it's a theory and not a proven fact, and while it remains a plausible and decently-supported theory, it's far from universally accepted IME?
"Pirating" plays via shorthand reporting isn't a theory, no; it's explicitly attested to in contemporary sources. (Thomas Heywood, off the top of my head.) It's true that we don't know for a fact that it's the explanation for Shakespeare's so-called "Bad Quartos" in particular, but the existence of the practice isn't in question. Some scholars tend to get so focused on Shakespeare that they conflate "are the Bad Quartos the product of shorthand reporting?" with "did the practice of shorthand reporting exist?", but those are very much separate questions, and the latter is pretty well settled on "yes, it did".
