week 22
hey quick PSA but “reading before bed to wind down” only works if you’re normal about books btw. if you aren’t you are going to end up awake at 2:52am after finishing the whole book just trust me on this one
penultimate is such a good word. its like....maybe the second best word
Darcy’s introduction in Pride and Prejudice is really ‘what if you had just had the worst month of your life because your ex-bestie tried to lover boy scam your baby sister out of her share of your dad’s life insurance and your friend dragged you to a shitty party in a dive bar in the neighbourhood where he’d just signed a short term lease, and you decided to let your bad mood show because you were never going to see any of the assholes in this stupid shitty bar EVER again. And your friend ended up making out with a girl he’d just met there while you were stuck talking to her sister who was less cute and then her mother appeared and started trying to matchmake and started saying how if she was twenty years younger she’d clime you like a redwood and ooooh is that a black Amex, guess the next round is on you hahhahahahaha, while her other sister (how many fucking sisters does she have?!) flashed an obviously fake ID at the bar and ordered six vodka-diet red bulls and no one in her family except the less-cute sister even tried to stop her. And you went home and consoled yourself that you would never see any of these people again but then you met them over and over again because they live next door and your friend and the cute sister keep meeting up to make out but not actually date and then. You fall in love with the less-cute sister because it turns out she’s really witty and charismatic but she already knows and remembers and resents the fact that on a day when you were in a shitty mood you called her mid out loud in a dive bar.’

"It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then."
— alice in wonderland
Every so often I think of how the LOTR movies managed to cast a guy as Aragorn who is simultaneously yes, very masculine, very action-hero-y, and also someone who as a woman I would one hundred percent feel safe being alone with in any situation. Not one cynical, alpha male, smirky, appeal-to-the-jerkbros-in-the-audience fibre in his body. Just thinking about Viggo Mortensen’s Aragorn makes me feel a little calmer. Absolutely outstanding.
My favorite scenes in the LotR books are the ones where Legolas has vital information and just decides it's not important to share.
Like when Gandalf spent literal PAGES trying to figure out why the vibes were off in Moria and Legolas chimes in with just "it's a balrog :) that shit's evil :) we're so fucked :)" like what do you MEAN you knew already and just didn't tell him??
Or at the beginning of Two Towers when Aragorn thinks there's something nearby so he puts his ear to the ground to listen, and then like 10 minutes later is like "hmmm i hear horses" and Legolas is just like "mm yep. there are 105 blond bitches with spears" like you just let your friend put his face in the dirt and you can SEE them??
Legolas please gain a sense of urgency
It's because legolas hasn't spent enough time with non-elves to remember that they don't know what he knows.
gandalf is scratching his head in moria, and legolas is thinking "oh man, the wizard noticed something off *besides* the obvious balrog that we all are aware of??"
"I wonder what aragorn is listening for? must be hard to hear, what with all of the horses. How many horses are there, actually? 1... 2... 3..."
"What do your elvish eyes see?" is Aragorn saying, as politely as possible, "Because the REST OF US are at a significant disadvantage, Prince Dipshit."
Asunder is basically the most classic way to be torn, and if you're looking to be cleft, in twain is a vintage but stunning choice
obsessed with mass market paperbacks. their pleasing rectangular proportions. how they fit badly in a hoodie pocket so you can drag them around everywhere with you like a temporary little buddy. the way they fit in your hand because they're MADE for human hands and not as bookshelf decoration. the way the pages feel when you riffle them gently with your thumb. How pristine and crisp they look when you get them and how creased and folded they look when you're done, even if you try to be nice to them. how that wear is okay, how that's correct actually, because they're made with the philosophy that books aren't meant to be PRETTY, they're meant to be read. that little ripple new ones get on the left side from where you hold them when you're reading, the way the ripple only goes as far as you've read, because u change stories by reading as they are changing you. how you can find thousands of these creased and folded and loved little dudes in every thrift store and used book shop and neighborhood library and you can instantly see the ones that someone carried around in a backpack for weeks or read to pieces or gave up on halfway through because they wear being read like fresh snow wears footprints. I love these poorly made, subpar little rectangles so much. truly the people's books.

FAVE BOOKS: pride and prejudice by jane austen
i declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! how much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! ⏤ when i have a house of my own, i shall be miserable if i have not an excellent library!
Ursula K. Le Guin, The Left Hand of Darkness
On the subject of Théoden’s almost total narrative failure of Éowyn* despite the fact that we’re told he loved her dearer than daughter…
When he’s lying there dying and she steps up to the Witch King to protect him, I can’t help but note the way she chooses to identify herself in that critical moment: “Éowyn am I, Éomund’s daughter.” She then calls Théoden her “lord and kin,” but that’s far from personal. He’s lord to all the Rohirrim and kin could be a parent but it could also be a third cousin twice removed. She doesn’t take on the identity of his adopted daughter or claim him as that kind of influence on her. In the single most consequential moment of her life — one in which Théoden is a key element— she stakes her claim to Éomund’s legacy instead.
And I don’t know… seems relevant!
* Book Théoden, obviously, who not only invites Gríma into Meduseld and does nothing in response to his predation on Éowyn, but then offers Gríma a total pass when his sins are publicly exposed, allows him to wander off where he very well might become a threat again and apparently forgets that Éowyn is even his kin for a moment (Háma: “uh, Éomer is not an only child”).
I should add (because it was alluded to in the original tags but it’s an important enough point to be Post Worthy) —
What I find fascinating about her choice of identification here isn’t just what it says about how she feels about Théoden at the moment (my personal HC is that she does, indeed, love Théoden still, even if there is a lot of hurt there as well) but equally what it says about what she thinks of Éomund.
She was still very young when he died. How much does she remember clearly of him as a man and a dad? He also died doing something really stupid, which arguably then led to her mother’s death as well. What version of that story has she heard and internalized? What does she really think of Éomund’s choices and actions? Perhaps her assertion of herself as his daughter here indicates she remembers him well and fondly despite his faults, or that she actively chooses not to engage with those faults out of love for him, or that she was always shielded from the cold reality of his fate and doesn’t understand those faults. Perhaps it means she doesn’t remember him all that well and doesn’t even know much about him, but she’s constructed a mythologized version in her mind that feeds a need to come from a line that embodies the glory and honor and heroism she values. Or perhaps she knows full well that her father suffered from impulsivity and rashness, and she’s invoking that intentionally because she knows on some level that putting herself up against the Witch King, one-on-one, is an extremely Éomund-coded form of reckless courage.
We don’t know the answer. We only know that when she finds herself in a moment of great fear and courage and despair and pain, she acts to tie herself to the memory of Éomund, the father she spent only a small fraction of her life with and who has been dead and gone for almost 2 decades. And I find that extremely intriguing.
