For a moment I was lying here wondering why the fuck does Yugi sleep like he's in a coffin but then I realized.

I didn't overthink the cards too much... but the clothing was difficult and caused a ton of problems

I didn't expect the result to turn out this vibrant in the end, but I'm happy with how it came out

I want a poster of this for my wall

i think maybe this comparison alone shows how drastically different the tone of both scene are

(for extra context there's the stock triumphant music playing during the last shot)

there is no moment of jou telling the others to leave the building as he stays behind to watch over yugi. there is no jou saying he would drag yugi from crossing the river of styx.

its jou and honda wacking the spike with metal pipes for two seconds then poof yami just gives jou the answer in the dumbest looking way possible.

the whole scene is over with in less than 5 solid minutes.

this doesn't appear. at all. this internal questioning of jou weighing his options on getting yugi out of there without the puzzle for his safety but knowing yugi would never forgive him if he did that and left the puzzle behind. manga jou knows how much the puzzle means to yugi and would risk his own safety as well just to make sure yugi didn't get killed.

And I could yell about how much fucking dumber Jou and Honda sound in the English dub or how completely removed Yugi’s guilt and desire to see Yami is and how watered down their bond is in this moment when the DDM arc sets the bedrock upon which the ceremonial duel rests.

But actually I want to talk about shot construction for a sec. Specifically visual clarity. How the manga has incredibly tight panels that Jou never seems to fit comfortably into with all these spiky balloons and big sound effects and motion lines that absolutely choke the page and add to the sheer Intensity. The fire is hot and overwhelming and choking them out and you can feel that in every panel (I sound like an English teacher but onwards we press). The moment that Yami is able to reach out to Jou via the puzzle then stands in sharp contrast. Jou goes from frenzied panic to sharp clarity to decisive action and again! YOU FEEL THAT IN THE PANELING!!!
