I used to post photos of my peaceful and stable childhood growing up in America, it was a peace every person in the world should be able to experience. A peace made largely impossible for so many by the country that afforded me that privilege. It fills me with a righteous anger to know that my country robs others of their peace for the sake of profits. I no longer post those photos, the beauty of my youth feels distasteful to post when there are so many solutions to real problems that are completely off the table because those with obscene wealth want ever more. There may come a day when I feel as though I can make such art again, but that day will come when the status quo of oppression is overturned and we can come together to build a more equitable society from the ground up. Putting in that work feels like a better use of my time than making photos of a world that doesn’t really exist.
