POINTS OF REFERENCE

elodie was born in new mexico, raised up in the dust of sundowner ‘mobile home’ ( read: trailer.) park in san juan county. primarily cared for by her maternal grandmother, she watched her mother and father flit in and out of jail for the first five years of her life – then her father almost became the victim of a gang hit and it was decided a change in scenery was necessary.

valdez was their next stop, and elodie’s mother instantly fell in with the savages. yumi park became one of their best escorts, a position elodie didn’t understand until she was nine and a boy at school called her mom a whore.

years of bitter disappointment made yumi cruel – she drank more often than not, and took a lot of the bitterness she held out on elodie; more than once elodie showed up at school with a bloodied lip or blackened eye – from nights when yumi got careless. her fahter just watched, pitying but never intervening. usually too high to do much when he wasn’t out doing whatever it was he did for the savages.

lonely elodie tried to stay as distant as possible from her mother for as long as possible, often taking refuge at the local library – a place where she became a fixture from the age of seven. every day after school, elodie would walk to the library from school and read between the dusty stacks until closing time. it was the worst time of day, when she began that trek back to the house she knew would never be a home.

teachers began to notice her. not in the way elodie needed; no calls were put in to cps over the increasingly obvious bruises and cigarette burns, but she was fast-tracked through the third grade. then paperwork was put through to enroll fourteen year old elodie in senior ap classes, all signed by elodie in her mother’s hand.

for the first time in a long time, elodie felt hope, and realized she had a real chance at making something of herself - an opportunity she would not throw away. she was going to grow up, get an amazing job helping people, and never return to valdez again. 

this endeavour started with her part-time job at the diner. elodie opened herself a bank account, once again forging her mother’s signature, and every dime of her paycheck and cent of her tips went into it. the college fund ballooned as she waitressed her way through high school.

around this time, her parents broke up. not a divorce, as it turned out they’d never even been married - her mother just moved into the motel full time and her father remained in their dilapidated bungalow, rotting himself away with alcohol and opiates.

the one constant she clung to was her hatred towards the savages, and by extension the cobras. when she turned fifteen and her mother broke her jaw in a jealous fit after a leering comment from her ‘boyfriend’ at the time, elodie vowed she would never have anything to do with any gang member as long as she lived.

it was not shortly afterwards, therefore, that she foolishly fell in love with one. shockingly, it did not end well, and it took far too long for elodie to realize she couldn’t save him. as much as she loved him - more than she’d ever loved anything, her whole life, she would always be his second choice over his own first love - the gang.

maybe it was fate that brought her back to valdez; cruel, twisted fate, but fate nonetheless. with fantastic standing at john hopkins, and a highly successful internship at mount sinai, she’d expected a residency position after her boards, but had been bypassed for the trauma attending’s nephew. still, there were a half dozen other hospitals that wanted her. 

then her father called; sick and old, with only a few months left, and elodie felt the dread pool in her stomach as she realized she was going to go back to valdez, and she was going to nurse her dying father til the end. 

so, she accepted the residency position at the local hospital and packed her jeep with her belongings, making the road trip back to her hometown with fear and rage in her heart and fleetwood mac blasting from the stereo system.

POSSIBLE CONNECTIONS

a lifelong best friend who has seen elodie through the ugliest and most beautiful days. by some miracle they stuck around during elodie’s tumultuous childhood, when everyone else in her life made it very clear she was an afterthought, at best. they were the shoulder elodie found herself crying when she finally realized how fantastically she’d managed to fuck up, and who she spent hours on the phone and skype with her through college and her internship. they’re probably the only part of valdez elodie ever missed, and is happy to come back to.

savages members who remember her mother and know her father. yumi’s been dead for years, but while she was growing up these people loved to tell elodie they were her family. maybe some are proud of her for her accomplishments, or others might hate her for turning her back on the “family.”

an ex-fiance. he wasn’t the first to touch her, but he was the first one to love her; the one that mattered. the one that hurt the most, ten months down the line when she was wearing his ring on that finger and begging him to leave with her for new york. but he stayed staunchly loyal to the organization she’d spent her whole life hating, and she left town hating him the way you can only loathe someone you’re never going to stop loving.

a high school ex who took an interest in elodie when she was still the innocent-eyed freshman prodigy half the football team was pining after. maybe he saw that repressed fire in her eyes, or the sadness even deeper down. either way, his persistence in his pursuit of her paid off, and for the better part of a year he revelled in corrupting her, culminating in taking her virginity then dropping her like it was nothing.
