She and Finnick haven’t been in the same room since Luis was eight. It makes her throat seem to swell thinking about it. About how they’d spent that entire afternoon, in the back of his aunt’s kitchen, arguing. Over what, she doesn’t remember, and it hadn’t mattered. It’d gotten so heated that his cousin had stepped in between them. Finnick had left early. Annie had locked herself in the bathroom and wanted to cry, but barely stopped herself from breaking the mirror instead.
After that, they weren’t in the same room. Finnick’s never been blessed with an abundance of maturity, but he was the one who’d been blunt enough to say it.
I can’t focus on our son when you’re there.
It’s a magnetism Annie’s never understood. The way she’s pulled to him, how her senses lock on, everything about him filling everything she can see, everything she can hear, his presence somehow crawling into her chest. When they’d been younger, she’d thought it was romantic. She’d loved it, how he could walk into a room and all she could see was him. She’d thought it meant that they were meant to be together. That she loved him.
She did love him.
Annie exhales shakily. Her fingers tighten on the steering wheel.
There’s a knock on the window, and her head immediately smacks against the car window as she jolts upright.
Her brother Ronan’s standing there. He just raises his eyebrows at her. “You’re forty one years old,” he says when she opens the door. “Put your shoes on and get your shit together.”

I feel like this is the most "obvious" answer, but I genuinely wish I could change Finnick Odair's death. Finnick and Annie had so much taken away from them, and I really wish they got the happy ending they desperately deserved.
(Though, I acknowledge that's exactly why Finnick's death was a brilliant literary choice. It doesn't matter who you are, who you love: war isn't fair. His death being "pointless" is the whole point.)
What is my wildest headcanon:
My wildest headcanon is I think that District 4 is fundamentally different from Districts 1 and 2 as a Career district.
Outside of Districts 1 and 2, District 4 is the only district that broadly trains skills that are useful for the Hunger Games. However, unlike Districts 1 and 2, District 4 teaches these skills for the fishing industry, not necessarily to win the games.
I think Districts 1 and 2 are Careers because they consistently produce top tributes every year. I think District 4 is a Career district because it has the capability to produce top tributes and it does . . . every few years.
I think when District 4 has a competitive tribute like Finnick, they win. I think the rest of the time, when District 4 doesn't win, they were not very close to winning.
I think every year, Districts 1 and 2 have competitive tributes. When they don't win, they were still very close to winning.
Even in Katniss' games, Districts 1 and 2 performed far better than District 4. I think Finnick is the exception, not the rule. If there were more "Finnicks," I think we would know about them.
That said, I don't think District 4 does specialized training for the games. I think all "training" is strictly in the fishing industry, and applied pretty broadly because everyone needs to learn similar parts of the industry. And the rankings are based on work performance/skills rather than who wants to participate in the games.
So the culture is sending the children who have the best chance into the arena. Not volunteering out of competition or pride. This doesn't mean there aren't exceptions to the rule, because I believe there absolutely are.
But this theory is easy to overlook when the worst tribute from District 4 is still in the top half of tributes just because they have years of survival training.
I think if this theory is true, it makes so much sense why Finnick volunteered when he was so young. Could he have been competitive? Absolutely. But this system also makes it possible for him to literally be the best tribute because they aren't receiving specialized training like Districts 1 and 2.
And . . . if top-ranked kids back out of volunteering because they realize they can't win, this system encourages the next ranked kid to volunteer in their place on an impulse, without realizing what the first kid did: they don't have a chance.
None of the other districts would know the top ranked kid didn't volunteer because they just see they have a volunteer.
And I think this also explains how a tribute like Annie Cresta could volunteer.

Two things absolutely changed my life as a writer. You ready?
One- Your characters can be bad people, they can do bad things. There doesn't have to be a reason or a moral. You can make them bad if you want to. No other reason needed.
Two- it doesn't have to be good, it just needs to be written. On my last book i literally wrote the words "dumbest version" on the top of the page because I had seen some advice to do that. It changed everything. I stopped trying to make it perfect, I just tried to make it. Period. Full stop. You can edit bad writing. You can't edit a blank page.
And honestly? Defiance is the best writing I've ever done. All because I let my characters be bad and I gave myself the freedom to write it badly.
for a writer, I spend a lot of time fantasizing about writing, thinking about my blorbos, what situations I should put them in, what prompts give my heart serotonin, instead of actually writing
me going through my physical copies of Catching Fire and Mockingjay and adding sticky notes to every page that mentions Finnick Odair or Annie Cresta. Dialogue, descriptions, anything so I don't screw up Finnick after not introducing him to my readers until the first third of my book xx
Honestly his characterization and dialogue are too good, too consistent. He's effortlessly funny, but his jokes are specifically self-aware, yet cynical. As soon as i finally come up with a perfect line of dialogue, I'm like crap, now he has to say something else. Every line has to be effortless, and writing that takes so much effort ironically.

This is largely a personal project I'm writing for fun. While my inspiration for canon is primarily the books, I have borrowed some inspiration from the movies as well (specifically with some descriptions). Signing up to be a beta reader for this project is very low pressure: only leave the feedback you want to leave. I'm grateful for any feedback as long as it's respectful.
I'm not looking to rewrite the entire story (I'm still actively writing it). I primarily want feedback on how I can improve my writing. Constructive criticism is greatly appreciated.
After I complete the story, I may use feedback to refine and improve the story. While my original story changes Finnick's ending, I am open to writing a second, strictly canon ending and posting the alternate version for readers who prefer it.
Beta readers will receive a link to their own google document containing a copy of my story (not the live draft). Beta readers will be able to comment in the document as they see fit. Each beta reader will have a separate copy of the story to keep feedback separate and private.

I think Annie Cresta's games seem more remarkable than they are because of her relationship with Finnick Odair. Because people are emotionally invested in Finnick, they emotionally invest in Annie because he loves her.
When Finnick and Annie are introduced in the books, their romantic relationship is central to who they are. But, Catching Fire takes place five years after Annie won her games. That's a significant time gap for them to form a relationship.
I think Annie's games are seen as "suspicious" because:
She won because a dam flooded, and she was the best swimmer.
2. By the time the arena flooded, she was "mad," not an ideal tribute to be crowned victor, and Finnick later loves her.
Personally, I don't think Annie's games are "suspicious" because:
The arena flooding isn't the advantage it appears to be from the surface.
Yes, Annie is a great swimmer because she's from District 4, and most tributes from other districts don't know how to swim. That said, drowning every remaining tribute except for Annie is still a massive amount of water. The arena has different elevations, tributes are scattered around in different places, there's debris from the broken dam and the environment. The event is an uncontrollable flood. Floods are extremely dangerous, even for the best swimmers, due the the fast currents and debris. If you're near the initial wave, you're dead. And at the point of the flood, Annie is traumatized by her district partner's death. That would affect her ability to perform basic tasks and functions, including reacting to the flood and swimming.
2. A non-ideal tribute winning the Hunger Games is an illustration of the games' unfairness and cruelty.
While the Capitol occasionally benefits from the victors like Finnick Odair, at its core, the Hunger Games exists to punish the districts and to assert the Capitol's control and power over the districts through fear. Not even "favored" tributes in Districts 1 and 2 can escape the games' cruelty. The need to explain why a non-ideal victor like Annie Cresta could win misses the point of the games: no one wins.
If anything, I think how Annie won suggests that the Capitol didn't intend for the arena to flood, they didn't intend to drown all of the other tributes, they didn't intend for Annie to win. Like the tributes, the flood was likely another thing the Capitol pretended they had control over. In that case, they would be grateful to have a tribute left to crown victor.
The dam failed. And we will never know if it was a design flaw, damaged by an earthquake, or broken by other means.
But I do think Annie Cresta became a victor largely due to luck (her location in the arena, knowing how to swim).
I think the theme of the Hunger Games is no one has control over the games: not the districts, not the Capitol, and not Finnick Odair. It's part of the cruelty and horror.
Even the people who designed the games can't control their outcome. It demonstrates the Capitol's fragile illusion of power.
"Luna and Amethyst stepped away and returned with a gown that reminded me of the sea. Sheer aqua, sparkling teal, and cream fabric were arranged in a design that reminded me of waves pulling away from shore. I lightly touched the dress that reminded me so much of home. They even captured the white crest of waves. I thought District 4 was the only place in Panem with the ocean.
"When I touched the cream fabric, Amethyst said 'Oh! I added the white this morning. Do you like it? I thought it was a nice touch with your name.'
"My name?
"'Cresta like the crest of a wave,' Jade explained.
