Bow before Z. rex! 🦐 Better known as the emperor shrimp (Zenopontonia rex), this tiny crustacean can be found throughout tropical waters in the Indo-Pacific. Notice its colorful “throne?” This species is a hitchhiker that can most often be found riding on the backs of marine organisms like sea cucumbers and nudibranchs! Thanks to this living arrangement, the shrimp is able to move from location to location with ease and can more effectively avoid predators. What’s in it for the nudibranchs and sea cucumbers? Scientists think the emperor shrimp might “clean” its hosts by removing harmful parasites, but this has yet to be determined.

"Inscribed with traditional motifs and pearl shell, Kisay Dhangal reflects the life cycle and feeding patterns of the dhangal (dugong) in the Torres Strait Islands. The dhangal is captured in the position known as San Tidayk, in Kala Lagaw Ya language which marks the moment the mammal flips its tail to dive down and graze on the sea grass beds. A marine dust trail between the tail and figure of the moon emphasize how lunar cycles determine dugong feeding and mating habits."

Proboscis Bat Rhynchonycteris naso
It is found from southern Mexico to Belize, Peru, Venezuela, Bolivia and Brazil, as well as in Trinidad. The bats are nocturnal, sleeping during the day in an unusual formation: most of them line up, one after another, on a branch or wooden beam, nose to tail, in a straight row.
In the photo, the two bats on the lower left are carrying young.
