āSo, Iām totally think 2020 is gonna be the best year yet.ā The brunette smirked, ordering two shots and pushing one towards the other adult. āAnd what better way to do that than end 2019 with shots on shots on shots?ā
"What makes you think that? Because if youāre like a psychic or something, I need you to tell me whatās in my future,ā Elliott typed with a grin. He eyed the shots and shrugged, typing,Ā āHow can I argue with that logic?ā

āI could say my new yearās resolution would be to eat healthier,ā The brunette started, popping another french fry into her mouth, ābut what fun would that be? And besides, french fries are heaven sent.ā
āI donāt know why anyone even tries to eat healthy, to be honest. Itās such a waste because no oneās ever happy doing it. I feel like New Yearās resolutions always end up being torture,ā Elliott wrote in response.
Scarlett has been sitting in the coffee shop for a good hour sketching away looking up occasionally. Her coffee had long gone cold grimacing at while taking a brief sip glancing around spotting Elliott. A wide smile blossomed across her face as she quickly gathered up her things, the two had been introduced through Chess, and she genuinely liked the guy. Reaching his table she tapped him on the shoulder still smiling.
āHey bubba how are you doing this fine evening?ā Scarlett signed as Elliott had been giving her ASL lessons for a while, and she was semi-confident in her knowledge of it as she then pointed to the empty chair. āMind if I join you?ā
Elliott smiled when he realized that Scarlett was standing above him, happy both to see her and see how well she was signing. He nodded and gestured to the empty chair, signing,Ā āGo ahead! Iām doing well. I just got locked out, so Iām waiting around for Chess. Itās my own fault, I really have to stop doing this. How are you? Your signing has gotten so good!ā
It t took Charles a few moments to understand why Elliott was typing and not speaking. Luckily, for one of his business partners Charles had to learn to sign. He hoped he could still remember most of it, it had been a while since heād had to speak to Thomas, his old partner. āThen hurry up and order!ā he signed, his expression showing annoyance. Charles clicked his fingers to get the bartenders attention and pointed to the man beside him. āGet his drink!ā
Elliott was even more confused when Charles started to sign, but decided that it wasnāt worth it to look a gift horse in the mouth. The man might have been aggressive, but at least he no longer looked like he wanted to fight him. Elliott showed the bartender his order and looked back at Charles.Ā āThank you,ā he signed, but his expression betrayed his confusion. Unsure of what to say without getting back on his bad side, Elliott opted for a compliment, signing, āYour sign is really good.ā

Shiloh had been needing caffeine for the last few hours, and with their coffee machine on the fritz in the bakery she was forced to venture out to grab a cup. Not that it was necessarily a bad thing, she was overdue for a break and the coffee shop was one of her favorites so it wasnāt too much of a hassle for her to stop in. As she waited in line for her order she looked around, noticing a wallet on the ground, figuring it belonged to the only other person present. Calling out a few times she wondered if he had headphones in, tapping him lightly on the shoulder and offering an apologetic smile as he turned and typed out a message on his phone. Piecing together why he probably hadnāt heard her she slowly and carefully signed. Hi, sorry is this your wallet before shaking her head. āSorry, itās been a while since Iāve signed, I probably just did that all wrong.ā
Elliott smiled when she started signing, appreciating the effort. āNo, no. That was perfect,ā he signed slowly, nodding encouragingly. Looking at the wallet and feeling his pockets, he realized that it was his. Not wanting to confuse her by continuing to sign, he wrote,Ā āThank you so much! That is mine. I must have dropped it when I was ordering. It would have been really bad if I had left it, so thank you. Can I buy you a coffee in thanks?ā
Jack was momentarily confused before he saw the other typing and saw what was on his phone. Going in and out of foster homes, heād seen signing, but never thought to pick up any of it. He quickly pulled out his own phone, smiling lightly. āOh, sorry! Do you mind if I join you? I hate to take up an entire table to myself.ā He showed the other his phone, gesturing to the empty chair at the table.
Elliott quickly read the otherās words, grateful that he had written his response. Elliott was always worried he would misunderstand something when he lipread, and it was always a lot more work for him than it was for the other person. He smiled and nodded, writing,Ā āYeah! I definitely donāt need all this space, so itās no problem! Iām Elliott, by the way.ā
If you could go anywhere in NYC for a day where would you go?
āIāve always wanted to ice skate at the Rockefeller Center, so Iād definitely go there! And probably Central Park, because I wish there was more green space around the city. I know those are really boring answers, but Iād just want to relax and be outside.ā

Nick stepped inside the coffee shop expecting nothing than a quick visit to pick up something to keep him going for the day. He spotted the familiar Murphy sibling and tapped him on the shoulder. Nick didnāt know a lot of sign language but heād pick up a couple of pieces as he encouraged Chess to teach him more. As Elliottt turned to him he raised his hand to his forehead and dropped it, signing āhelloā to the younger male. I was just getting a coffee, how are you? he typed quickly into the boys phone.
Elliott smiled when he recognized Nick and signed hello in response.Ā āIām good, how are you? I left my key in the apartment, though, so you can expect Chess to be complaining about that later. Iām here waiting for him to let me in,ā Elliott typed, rolling his eyes as he showed Nick. He didnāt give him a chance to read it, though, before he took it back and typed beneath, āHere, sit. Unless youāre busy, obviously. I donāt want to interrupt.ā He turned his phone back to Nick, letting him read the whole thing this time.
Charles had been sitting at his bar, sipping his whiskey and trying to forget the long day he had when a figure had shadowed him. āPlease, unless youāre here to serve me more alcohol or something a little strongerāā he paused, looking up and at the person. āIām not interested!ā he snapped slightly, downing his drink and slamming the empty glass on the counter.
Elliottās brow furrowed as he tried to follow the otherās lips to figure out what he was saying. He had only approached the bar to order a drink, but, as he tried to get the bartenderās attention, he saw the man face him and start to speak. Confused, he opened his phone and typed,Ā āIām sorry, what? I was just trying to order, not piss you off.ā He showed the other his phone, and hoped he would be sober enough to actually read it and not escalate things.
Elliott was always on alert when Jules was around. Of course, he loved her and would do anything for her, but he didnāt quite trust her to pass up the temptation of attacking him at any given moment. That isnāt to say that he never starts anything. He has been known to sneak up behind her and push her, sometimes at inopportune moments, not realizing that she was on the phone or in the middle of a conversation. But he likes to pretend that she was always the one to make trouble, and heās usually right. He was wary of crossing in front of the sofa, knowing that she was probably waiting to attack. Feeling her land on his back didnāt come as a surprise, and he laughed while trying to throw her off and back onto the sofa. Succeeding, he turned around and laughed while signing,Ā āAre you sure you want this fight? I thought youād be tired of losing by now.ā
āI feel so old, but I have no clue what either of those things are. Was there any context that might indicate itās a good thing? Maybe it was a compliment?ā
Chester sighs in fond annoyance at the text from his brother. He makes a mental note to get Elliott some sort of ugly huge keyring that canāt go unnoticed so he never forgets his keys again. Itās a good thing heās already on his way back to the apartment from Nickās, sending a quick text in reply and heading for the usual coffee shop he knows his brother will be waiting in. Noticing Elliott talking to someone he decides to grab a coffee before heading over then slips into the seat opposite once the person is gone. āIām going to glue your damn key to your hand.ā He signs, knowing his brother prefers it.Ā
Elliott grinned as his brother sat down and rolled his eyes.Ā āThat would be kind of useless, though, right? Because then I couldnāt use the key or my hand, which I guess would be a good way of getting me to shut up. But you know Iād still find a way to lose it,ā he signed with a shrug.Ā āIām sorry if I interrupted you or anything. But, honestly, you should be used to me needing to be let in after work.ā

Elliott had just gotten done with work and was halfway home when he realized he had forgotten the key to his apartment again. Shooting his brother a quick text to see when he would be home and could let him in, he decided to stop in a coffee shop to wait. He bought the cheapest coffee they had and pulled out his phone, scrolling mindlessly and checking his messages. After a few minutes, he felt someone tap his shoulder. He quickly typed on his phone,Ā āIām sorry, did you say something?ā. Looking up, he showed it to the person standing above him.
belle, 19, EST, she/her, none ⢠i swear i just saw SEAN BERDY out on the streets but it turned out to be ELLIOTT MURPHY. HE was born on DECEMBER 3RD making them only 24 years old. Theyāre known to be +LOYAL +KIND and -DEPENDENT -PUSHOVER. They spend most of their time being a BAKER. Rumour has it theyāre GAY, and can be found in HARLEM. You know youāve found them when you come across HANDS FLYING EXCITEDLY TO TELL A STORY, THE SUN COMING OUT AFTER DAYS OF RAIN, FAMILY DINNERS.
Elliott was born the only Deaf person in a family of hearing people. While his siblings never made him feel any different, he always felt isolated from his parents, because they never made any effort to communicate with him.
Because his parents didnāt care, he grew up without learning how to sign and relied heavily on his siblings, writing, and reading lips. It wasnāt until he was in third grade that he actually learned to sign, when a teacher saw him struggling and taught him.
He was always behind in school, because, letās be real, most public schools do not know how to help kids with disabilities. So when his older siblings turned eighteen, and they left home, he thought it was easier to just drop out of school.
When they settled in New York, Elliott decided to get a job to help support the family. He worked a couple of odd jobs for a few years, but wanted to do something he cared about. He was always good at baking, so he took a job at a bakery.
He had always wanted to go to college and study art, but he quickly learned that would never happen. He already felt bad that his older siblings had sacrificed so much for him and his younger sister, and he knew that it was too much of a financial burden to be realistic. Still, he sometimes hopes that there might still be a chance.
Elliott can communicate by reading lips and reading/writing, but prefers to use sign language.Ā
