It was 9:30 on a Saturday night and the restaurant was packed. Servers were running like chickens when their heads cut off, the bussers had their arms curled protectively around piles of dirty dishes and over-flowing glasses, and his manager was surely off somewhere dealing with a complaint about spilled guac on someoneâs coat. But thankfully for Dominic, he was tucked safely away behind the bar.
All he had to tend to was the dozen or so people sitting up at the bar, nursing their fitting Manhattans and martinis. However, Dominicâs attention was focused on the 5 women seemingly on a girls night out ordering double tequila pineapples, and complaining about their husbands and how badly they needed a spa getaway.Â
With a tray of five water glasses and five new drinks, Dominic made his way back over to where they were sitting and carefully set them down in front of them. âYou ladies need to be out laying in the sun if youâre gonna keep drinking these all nigh.â he teased, playing along with their conversation and nodding along politely. The service industry was nowhere near where he wanted to be in the next 5 years, but the money he could make from humouring his guests were so good, it almost felt like stealing. As soon as they began their gaggle or responses, Doms attention drifted to a new person that had made themselves comfortable just a few seats over.
âHm,â he replied, not knowing exactly what he was replying to. âWell as long as you ladies drink these waters as well, then you can continue thinking whatever you want.â With a playful wink Dominic left to tend to the stack of unpolished glasses heâd been working his way through, the stack that was right by where she was sitting. âHey, how you doinâ?â He asked, flashing her a friendly grin. âCan I grab you anything to drink? I mean, anything but pineapple juice and bar rail tequila. Iâm pretty sure they finished the last of our supply.â
