People always ask what a story is "about" like there's one answer. but a story is about whatever the reader needed it to be about the day they read it. you write a story about a woman leaving a house and one person reads it as a story about freedom and another reads it as a story about loss and another reads it as a story about their mother and none of them are wrong and you didn't write any of those stories on purpose. the story knows things the writer doesn't. that's not mystical. that's just how meaning works.

first incidence of good writing advice i've seen in 10+ years on this platform and it's in the notes of a mustelid wreaking absolute havoc in a german grocery store

You too can get the satisfaction of maiming or killing a spy embedded in your organization.
I have a suggestion
“reminder that x character did terrible things” spoken not in like a scoldy or judgemental way or that they need to repent for their sins or whatnot. but as in “i love my guy who sucks. why are you taking the sucks out of my guy. that’s literally the best part about them.”
reminder that The Character did an atrocity that was crucial to the story and became the best at narrative value-maxxing by doing that

being sick & miserable objectively sucks, but it has become significantly easier to cope with since learning that “sickness behavior” is a well documented part of the body’s immune response
feeling not only physically but also emotionally like fucking garbage is unfortunately an extremely effective way to force your body to prioritize fighting infection & keeping you alive. i don’t have to like it, but knowing why i get weepy & pathetic when sick does help at least a little
i just found out that this is not common knowledge and am reblogging so more people know
YOUR BODY DOES THIS ON PURPOSE
YOU ARE NOT A BAD PERSON BECAUSE OR "WEAK" WHEN YOU ARE SICK IF YOU CAN"T CARRY ON AS NORMAL
Current writing advice I'm seeing on TikTok and Insta is telling authors to stop using em dashes in their work because, "AI uses em dashes so people will think you've used AI."
Y'know, the AI that was trained on the stolen work of real authors?
Anyway, I will not be doing that. What I will be doing, however, is adding a note at the start of all my books that no AI was used in the creation of my work because I, the author, did not go to university for four fucking years to study English literature and linguistics only to be told I can't use proper grammar because someone might think a robot wrote it.
Fucking, insane.
It’s not only on TikTok, it’s also on YouTube and Reddit as a cheap “tell”. Anyone who uses emdashes at all is accused of being an AI bot, because people say that even if writers use them nobody will use one online (because phones don’t use emdashes, so reviews and comments with them are AI.)
It’s a little ridiculous.
... do people not know if you long hold the dash on a phone it creates an em dash???
I've been working primarily from my phone for over a year. I've written 70k of fiction on my phone using em dashes. I... who... what.
I can WHAT
. . . OH MY GOD I CAN

LOOK AT ALL OF MY BEAUTIFUL WIVES
ALL THE EM DASHES MY BELOVEDS
bibliosphere I owe you my life
thank you 😭❤️❤️❤️
for the visual learners:
I'm genuinely jazzed watching everyone in the notes learn how to make em dashes on their phones, lmao.
Go, be free with your beautiful wives 🥹
Under observation.
sometimes i say things on twitter and then make a little graph about it
Today I wrote something that made me uncomfortable. A character’s legs got doused in dumpster juice. I have visceral reactions to just reading that kind of stuff, so writing it was a small challenge. I knew where I needed her day to go though. It had to go in the juice.

why would you ever outsource fun to chatgpt? are you stupid? you can make mediocre shit by yourself too.
you're missing out on all the crazy euphoric moments where you execute an idea flawlessly, sending it to your friends and feeling the genuine happiness at their reactions to something you made authentically. you're robbing yourself of something beautiful.
and I get it, writers block, artists block, depression can really be terrible, but once you break out of it (and you will) it will feel like climbing Mount Everest.
peace and love on planet earth! you are saving the environment AND you’re cool!
"You just gotta trust the process", says man working with no plan, no clear idea of what the ultimate outcome should look like, and even less of a clue about whether this is the way to achieve it.
Advice I gave someone today was: 'do it stupid.'
She wants to learn photography. Do it stupid. Take a million photos. Don't think about why they're not good. Enjoy the process of taking photos.
Pick out tge ones you like the most and figure out why you like them. Is it because the subject is centered? Is it because you caught them doing something cool? Is it because the light made cool shadows?
Do it stupid. If you try to do it smart, youll get stuck. If you think too much you'll never get to doing. Do it stupid.
You remind me of the blade.
What blade?
… the blade with the power?
What power?
The power of voodoo!
Who do?
You do!
Do what?
Remind me of the blade…
