i really fucking hate IT Security Guys like, as a labor class. they are usually some of the most belligerent and out-of-touch members of the computer-toucher taxon, and the most divorced from actual use cases. this is how we keep getting shit like hospital staff password cycling that results in nursing stations having video game-style postit note passwords all over them. 'well changing your password every two weeks is shown to be most effective at preventing hacks" thats great man did you do any research on this outside of your actuarial model. because Kathy down at the NICU cant fucking remember "b5h1Jh1HH#15" has been changed to "6h3%!1mn" on station 4, shes on 2 hours of sleep and has long covid
last computer security guy i talked to interrupted me in the middle of having a friendly conversation with him where i said i stole all the software i wanted and admonished me about malware?? and i said bro who the fuck do you think youre talking to. i have been pirating shit since i was, literally, 12 years old. and i have gotten zero viruses, ever. and he smugly retorted 'how would you know?' and i said because i scan my shit and watch my ports and pay attention? and then he went on this long lecture about how actually, most real malware cant be scanned for, blah blah, which is 1. categorically false unless youre talking about idk, advanced state department shit and 2. he was baffled when i explained to him that unless i could actually feel a difference in my own GPU/CPU power or bandwidth, or unless my files were being ransomed, i literally did not give a shit. if some hacker has managed to install secret malware that is undetectably cryptofarming my computer in a way that is undetectable to me through power consumption, wear n tear, process wastage etc, then why the fuck would i care. 'what if youre part of a DDoS attack" is it making youtube load slow? is my ping going up in Barotrauma? are my files being ransomed? no? then it has no material impact on me whatsoever. i dont have a principled stance against hacking, only a material interest in making sure my computer runs.
spent forty-five minutes today helping an 87yo woman who does not own a computer or a cell phone try to set up an email account so that she could then set up a second account in order to access benefits. went with protonmail, because they don't require 2fa, but it turns out that while you can still make a protonmail account without authentication you can no longer use it to create OTHER accounts without it, and the benefits page she needed to get to required both an email and a cell phone to create an account anyway. asked if she wanted to try going in person to see if someone there could help her, and she said that she had, and they'd directed her to the website. she tried signing up with her landline, but of course that didn't work because you can't do SMS authentication that way. finally ended up writing up detailed instructions for how to log in and authenticate her account so she can drive to her severely disabled daughter's house forty minutes away because that's the only person she knows and trusts who has both a cell phone and a computer.
anyway i fucking hate mandatory 2fa and i think the people responsible for it should have to spend a year navigating their lives with no cell phone and no internet access beyond the public library pcs. fuck.
Everybody get more anti war right now
What is even there to say? I can't keep waking up in a world where I read the news and I see schoolchildren bombed, millions of people displaced, old ladies carrying their cats and while their houses get turned into rubble, the waste of industry and human talent into bombs that shoot down other bombs.
Am I insane? what the fuck is going on?
Even the most just war of liberation is painful and regrettable, but you well know I'm not talking about that, we're watching first world countries sell weapons to feed endless war and just bombing targets like if it's a reflex act just what they do, the complete surrender of any hope of building a better world or coexisting and we're all treating this like it's just the natural state of things.
I'm sorry if I'm being dramatic but genuinely, get more anti war right now.
Warfare is not an inherent state of humanity, in any case, and it can and it will be abolished. I'm tired of people treating this like it's just the weather or nature. We know the material reasons behind war and they don't hold up and won't hold up forever.
is it hard to learn piano as an adult? i want to try
challenging, but it helps a lot to stop treating skill as something you are either supposed to have or not have, which i guess is why a lot of people wait for the right moment to get into whatever it is that they find appealing, and then never end up doing so. just like with anything that requires consistency, what you do becomes much more interesting and enjoyable when you stop looking at "it" as one enormous task and start looking at it as a series of teeny tiny problems. you deal with one, you learn how to get to the solution and onto the next. you do not necessarily even have to go in order, it's a huge grass field for you to explore like a little baby sheep. you already have curiosity and perhaps even appreciation for it (surely) so why not... that is good enough of a reason. consistency matters more than intensity and everything worthwhile is built through repetition. guidance and asking for help are of great importance as well so never hesitate to reach out to other people (forums are awesome especially if you cannot afford classes) and i 10000% stand by this but believe in your ability to teach yourself. take something that catches your eye, look it up, dissect it, wonder about it and most importantly be welcoming towards it and don't be in your head so much

explained to an 8 year old that once a fruit is ripe you only have so much time until it rots so you have to eat it soon and she said so i'll never be able to keep it perfect like this forever? no and there are about a million pieces of art for you unrelatedly
When I was a kid watching tv was idiot coded and nerds read books, but now scrolling shortform videos is considered braindead behavior and watching tv means you're some kinda intellectual. You might think this shifting assessment of media's consumers might make readers into absolute super geniuses, but no. Only perverts read now.
ok i'm a funny little homo who writes rpf about racecar drivers and stuff and my current longfic has a jokey tag about OSHA certifications and some extended mentions of workplace safety but like let me be very clear
if you're going to work with industrial equipment at your job, your employer must train you on lock out tag out procedures, at MINIMUM to recognize them and especially if you're expected to clean or maintain them. if you work above a certain height, your job is required to provide you with PPE and fall protection and train you in its proper use and inspection. if your job tells you to stand on forklift forks go update your resume. if your job tells you to touch an electrical panel and you're not an electrician it's time to get back on Indeed. in the meantime call your local OSHA office i swear to god. they love this shit. call them and then if they're like "sounds legit" go fill out the form and they will come to your job and tell them to do the minimum federal safety requirements to protect you and everybody else
"oh i mean. it's like illegal to fire me for calling osha but they'll be mad at me :(" hell yeah. good. piss those people off. walk in with a tshirt that says I CALLED OSHA and if somebody is an asshole to you just leave. whatever. it's your fucking life and safety dude it's literally your life. get out of there. miss a credit card payment. disappoint somebody. it's your fucking human life dude
The information above applies to the United States of America.
In Canada, federal employers are subject to the Canada Labour Code, enforced by the Labour Program. Most other employers are subject to the provincial or territorial departments in charge of enforcing the jurisdiction's occupational health and safety regulations. No matter your employer, if you work with hazardous materials, you must be provided WHMIS training in addition to other health and safety training.
The scope of these laws - what information and equipment employers are required to provide for you, and to which industries these laws apply - differ between regions. I make no claims to know the legal protections which apply to you.
The directory of governmental health and safety departments can be found on the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety website. Depending on your industry, it may take more research to identify the governing body in charge of your health and safety.

I lowkey hate when programs talk to me in a friendly way. "don't worry, nearly there!" Shut up. It should say "loading 64.3% completed. Do not turn off device" and absolutely nothing else. You arent my friend you are computer. Act like it

I honestly think Gen-Z and younger simply does not understand how recent widespread smartphone adoption is.
I am not that old, and I didn't have a smartphone until probably late high school. For most of my life, many if not most people were not walking around with a magic internet machine in their pocket that they pulled out and used constantly for everything.
reblog if you remember having to ration your text messages and accidentally opening the internet on your phone was the end of the world

âThere arenât enough hours in a day.â There are actually. The problem is that we think 40 hour work weeks are an unavoidable fact of life.
The problem is that everyone has to work 8 hours, pretty much no exceptions, and with getting ready time + (unpaid) lunch + commute, â8 hoursâ is actually anywhere between 9 and 12, every single day, with more work to do when you get home because our society and culture was built around having one member of the household home full time and nothing has changed now that almost everyone works.
No wonder Americans are reliant on DoorDash and fast food, thereâs no time or energy to cook. No one wonder mental and physical health are in shambles, many just spent all day sitting in fluorescent lights with little to no stimulation. âJust wake up earlierâ âJust meal prepâ⌠these are ok short-term, individual solutions, but the broader, systemic issue is obvious. We arenât built for this. Thereâs no work-life balance. Genuinely, I think if our culture could normalize a shorter work week, many individualsâ biggest problems would simply evaporate.

deriding things as performative is anti third space
im sitting on a patio at my favorite cafe rn and im hand stitching them hem of a dress im working on. and i can see why someone would say im being performative by working on something like this in a public space. but frankly theres no element of that. i just want to work somewhere that isnt my apartment. i want to be in public, i wanna chat with strangers, i wanna see the world. itâs nice to hang out somewhere that isnt my home!
what i mean is when you say people are being performative you discourage them from doing shit they love in public. and thats no way to foster the world we want to see.

our idiotic ancestors used to believe stuff that's not true but luckily we've now figured out all the true things to believe in
