about
Born in Charleston, South Carolina to middle-class parents who had nearly impossible aspirations for their children, Elena Alvarez grew up wanting to do all that she could to make them proud of her. Her older sibling, from her father’s first marriage, constantly did whatever they could to disappoint them, which left Elena having to pick up the slack. Her parents never outwardly put the pressure on her shoulders, but Elena took it on regardless and never let it go because she could feel how the disappointment they felt towards her sibling was wearing on them. She didn’t want to add to it but help as much as she could which became her ultimate goal above all others from a young age.
She got good grades, went to a good college, and was essentially a good girl throughout her entire life growing up in Charleston. Elena never stopped to think about what she wanted when she could see how well her actions were received by her parents. She prided herself on being the one that they could count on. She dated the same person throughout her time at college and when they both graduated, they immediately moved in with each other. Everything might have been moving too fast for anyone else but for Elena, it felt like she was taking the exact steps that were being laid out for her to take.
Elena did everything right, or so she thought, as she fought hard to keep the bubble up that everything between them was perfect and the plan for them was foolproof. She even made herself believe that when the day came and the proposal was there, she wanted to marry this person and spend the rest of her life with them. Everything between her and her partner read perfectly on paper and would make her parents beyond happy to know that she’d found someone that would not only take care of her but checked all the boxes. Every list that she made about how her life should look over the years was coming true.
However, not everything was as perfect as it looked on paper between them, from the long nights her partner spent away to the tense conversations they shared when they were together. They could barely get on the same page as her fiancé was leaving all the wedding decisions up to her and their mother as they didn’t want any input into what was supposed to be the greatest day of their lives. Elena struggled to keep a smile on her face, citing that every empty night at their apartment was because of how hard the other was working to provide a better future for them. That was precisely what they told her with every makeup to every fight that they would have, saying that it was the stress and the pressure taking a toll on both of them.
It wasn’t until the day of her wedding did she finally make the first decision for herself. It came from a phone call from her sibling as they said that needed her help and to come to them in a small town called Bradford Springs. Elena leaped at it without thinking about all the people that were waiting for her in the church or the fact that she was standing there in her wedding dress. Everything else paled in comparison to the fear that struck her that something was seriously wrong with her sibling. There was never a time when she wouldn’t drop everything to help her sibling, even if history would only repeat itself that she would be let down again and again. Her sibling would constantly skip out on her, her parents, and anyone else that bothered to care about them.
Elena took off and drove through the night to get to this small town, thinking the worst about what could possibly be happening to their sibling who reached out for help and not thinking about all the ways they’ve come in and out of her life; always asking for money. It wasn’t until she made it to town did she realize that her sibling was once again there to take her for the gullible fool that she was, stealing her car and just about everything in there that hadn’t been on her when she was ordering a coffee at the nearest café. She’s never really done anything for herself but rather did what she could to please those around her until she practically lost sight of who she was. It didn’t matter what happened as long as she continued down this path of keeping her friends and family happy, then Elena believed that she was happy too.
extras
Elena spends too much time on lists. She isn’t the type to do anything in the spur of the moment or without overthinking about it and making sure that she’s seen all the pros and cons of whatever action that she’s taking. The only spontaneous thing that she’s ever done was run away from her wedding and end up in Bradford Springs, which backfired tremendously. Or so she thinks. Elena hasn’t had enough time to figure out if this decision was the best one of her life or the worst.
She lives and breathes coffee, is not a morning person, and has no idea what she wants to do with her life now that she’s broken everything off with her old life. Only her best friend knows where she ended up as she’s decided to take some time for herself to figure out her next step. Not to mention the wedding that she ran out on and everyone back in her old life that wants to still know why she ran in the first place.
She attended Brown University. It was the only extended period of time that she spent away from home and not under the influence of living up to being this image of perfect in her parents’ eyes. It was the closest that she felt like herself until ending up in Bradford.
When she was younger, Elena dreamed of being a dancer but that was quickly erased in lieu of a career that was more dependable and something that would make her parents proud as she took a marking rep position with a PR firm in Charleston. She was working her way up the ladder before taking time off for her wedding and honeymoon, neither of which that she attended as she disappeared and doesn’t believe that she had a job there anymore.
