Now that Libby was back in Merrock after taking some time away to visit her parents back in Georgia, she noticed that a few locations popped up in town while she was gone. Seeing that there was a vegan restaurant located on the coast, she wanted to check it out for herself. "What would you recommend eating here?" Libby asked aloud, hoping that someone sitting near her would hear as she looked at the menu that was placed in front of her. "I've been wanting to try some new foods that I haven't had before and eating vegan food is not something I usually do." @merrock
Rory had been doing a photoshoot along the coast when she decided to stop into fresh. She’d been popping into the restaurant a few times when she worked with clients on the beach. Truthfully, she never considered vegan food before, but it was something new and she was a sucker for trying things out. She glanced up from her bowl and saw Libby. “Oh um... Well, this is pretty good- I’ve had it a few times. It’s the vegan shepherd’s pie.”

It was a warm Sunday morning and the entire town seemed to be out and about in the market. Walking their dogs on leashes, floppy ears and tongues bouncing as they trotted. Families guiding young children through the fray; grabbing hands, pointing in various directions for them to go, reprimanding them as they darted too fast or wandered too far. Garrick weaved around an older couple, holding bags and canes as the husband debated going back to a pastry stand for his wife.
Eyes combing over the crowd, he was still getting used to seeing it littered with strange faces. There were some that seemed like he knew them—maybe a first name, maybe by just their hair color or stature. He was just weighing his options for the direction he would continue going to the booths when he recognized the tall and broad frame of Tommy, holding hands with a little girl. His back was facing Garrick, standing with a dark haired woman, much smaller than him, carrying a bag presumably filled with fresh produce. The two appeared to be wrapped up in conversation, but it didn’t matter much to the child next to them. She couldn’t have been older than five or six, tugging on his fingers with all her might. Tiny feet barely staying on the payment as she pulled and pulled at him.
“Uncle Tommy.” The little girl’s voice carried on into a whine and she went on, “Come on. I wanna go get a snack. You promised I’d get one.”
Tommy glanced down at her, smile affixed to his lips as he said, “Come here, you little monster.”
Without much hesitation, Garrick watched as Tommy scooped his niece up effortlessly. The action was met with a barrage of laughter, her giggles and shrieks exploded out of her. Infectious and light. Both of his hands were practically the size of her torso and he gave her a small toss in the air before tucking her securely beneath an arm. She wriggled in her uncle’s hold, though she didn’t seem to give him much of a fight.
“Hey, I hope I’m not interrupting too much,” Garrick interjected with a grin, walking over to land on the opposite side of Tommy, away from the child’s shifting feet. He reached out a hand to clap him on the shoulder in greeting. “I saw one person I knew and couldn’t resist saying hi.” His gaze left Tommy’s to face the woman across from him, offering her a polite hand as he added, “I don’t believe we’ve met before. I’m Garrick.”
When things got rough in Rory’s life, she took it upon herself to understand more about food. Second to photography, the brunette fell in love with making different dishes. It was pretty rare for her to get the chance to as a preteen, what with how her father was and the lack of money that the Maddoxes experienced- especially after their mother passed. But when Rory saved up some money with odd jobs helping others in the neighborhood, she used the cash to go to the market and get some fresh food. So needless to say, in a time that was full of uncertainties for the young girl, the market was a sure thing.
Every now and then, she would rope Tommy into coming with her and Lou so that she could focus on finding the best ingredients for the upcoming week and this was one of those weekends. Rory had practically waved her brother and daughter away to go get said snack when she heard another voice and turned to look. She listened to the brief exchange between Tommy and Garrick, smiling gently at the latter. “Rory. Nice to meet you, Garrick. I’m the infamous sister that I’m sure Tommy’s never shut up about,” she said jokingly. “And this is my daughter, Lou.” The five year old waved at Garrick from her spot under Tommy’s arm.
Tommy's arrival to Rory's place had been at an ungodly hour, his dog is tow. He'd been home for all of five minutes before the panic had taken over and he knew that home was not the place to be. Too much of it reminded him of the people he welcomed into it. Sanctuary was his sisters home, his niece just a few doors away from where he crashed on her couch. Rue stuck close to his side, all too away of her owners change in behaviour.
Hours later when the world screamed at him Tommy had distracted himself with uncle duties. It wasn't until she was down for a nap that he seemed to stop working, stretching out over Rory's couch again staring up at the ceiling listening to Rory move through her home.
"I want to drink. I want to drink until I can't feel anything." It's the first time he gives her reason for his presence, his reason for surrounding himself around the people he loves. "But I don't want to be dad." He doesn't want to solve his problems by losing himself that way. He'd done enough damage last night and if history was to repeat itself more damage would be left in his path. "I don't want to let everyone down." Again.
Rory had been planning on going to the gala for ages. …Well, sort of. She had vaguely created an ensemble for the event but wasn’t entirely committed to it for some reason. Then, her plans got derailed when Lou came down with a fever and Rory canceled the babysitter. So, yeah, she was asleep on the couch when Tommy came in, but she didn’t mind it one bit.
A yawn came from her as she collapsed in the beanbag chair by the couch, glancing over at her brother. “I know dealing with a sick kid is exhausting but jeez T,” she says jokingly, giving him a small smile. “Hey-“ she stretched her arm out so her hand lay on him, “-you won’t. You haven’t let me or Lou down… and I honestly can’t think of a way that you could, okay? So keep that in your head.” She paused. “So… if you want to, you can tell me why you’re having these feelings. But I get it if you don’t too.”
It was a weekend where Ronnie had absolutely nothing to do. Her grandmother was playing mahjong that afternoon at the library with friends, so she decided to spend some time outside catching up on her reading. Book in hand, she sat cross-legged on the bench, enjoying the warm weather July had to offer. She only had read through a chapter, when she decided to look up from her book, seeing a familiar face. A bright smile came to her face when she noticed her, and she waved. "Hey, Rory! Enjoying the nice weather?"
Most weekends, Rory blocked out one day to give Lou some time with Tommy while she ran errands and got the pair ready for the following weekend. Of course she did actually run her errands, but usually she made sure she got some time outside of the townhouse and in nature in some way, otherwise she would go another whole week without getting to enjoy the good weather. So, she had been strolling through the park in a pair of leggings and an old tank top when she heard her name being called. Turning around, she saw Ronnie on the bench nearby and a smile came across her face. “Ronnie! Hey, how are you?” Without realizing it, she’d started moving closer to the spot where the other was and nodded. “Yes, absolutely. It feels like it’s been ages since I managed to walk through the park.”

"Oh, is that why you have to go with an iced latte? Because you need a cold drink to bring down the swelling?" he laughed. He didn't think that she actually had too much of a big head, but it was a little bit fun to tease her. Nodding his head to signify that he'd be back, he gestured towards the ltitle dining space, talking over his shoulder. "Pick a table, any table, I figure you know where the best one is. I'll be right back with our drinks."
Her tongue clicked as she tapped her forehead. “You catch on quick,” she continued to joke. Rory nodded in return before turning away to take a good look at the tables. She really hadn’t considered the seating arrangement in the café before now since she typically was just working and leaving. Even when she was wiping the tables or sweeping, she never stepped back to glance around. It left her a little lost for a moment before settling on a small table by one of the windows. She let out a soft sigh as she waited for Jace to return.
"I know, a truly shocking turn of events," she laughed with her friend. Livvy had grown up around horses, had always had pets at home, brought home stray animals with her siblings, it had only made sense that she spent most of her grown-up days around them, too. "I did have a goat attempt to eat a little girl's hair ribbon, not going to lie. That was fairly traumatic for the mom, even if I saved the day." Thankfully, she had been fast enough to prevent any disaster. "The animals are patient, but even they don't like having their hair pulled. Go figure, right?" Grinning at the idea of Rory's brother handling the games and winning, she nodded, "leave it to the menfolk. And let him spend all the countless dollars it takes to actually win one," she knew that most of those games could be rigged -- but at least the prizes were cute. "And that leaves you to have a good time with me. Nice how that works out, huh?"
Honestly, Rory would have been more surprised if Livvy wasn’t helping with the animals in some way. She fondly could remember how much love the blonde had for animals of all kinds and was overjoyed for her when she heard about her job at the Harmony Ranch. “Oh jeez, yeah. I can imagine. I would probably freak out a little too, honestly.” A snort came from the brunette at the comment. “He’ll figure out something, I’m sure. I wouldn’t put it past him to just hand some money over for a prize for Lou.” She grinned. “Yes of course. The stars aligned just perfectly for this, right? Have you had any of the fried oreos? They are so good. It’s a crime.”
Mandy gave a nod. She grinned a bit. “Oh, she’ll be alright, I think. She just wants to have some fun,” she said. Mandy remembered when she would rather run around the festival with her best friend instead of go around with her mom, or when she’d just follow her sister around instead. “We can check out what booths they have this year?” She wiggled her brows.
“She always wants to have some fun,” Rory replied with a small laugh. “As Tommy reminded me not long ago, everyone around here probably knows who she belongs to anyways, so she won’t get too far.” She drew a breath in and let it out before nodding. “I would love to check them out with you. And catch up. I feel like it’s been a hot minute since I’ve been able to hang out! How are you doing? What’s new or exciting?”
"Just tell her we have Rue," he offers. "She sees her regularly enough. Not once does she help clean up after her though, honestly, how long until I can put her to work?" he playfully asks, poking his sisters side. "I bet you'll scare all the mums away at PTA meetings. I've very proud of you." Tommy was in fact proud of Rory, she was her own person who knew how to stand her ground when challenges came her way. "Good.. good... and the other thing is... good?" 'The other thing' is as much as Tommy will refer to her other job. He typically doesn't deny it exists, he just doesn't ask for the details of what she does. He will check in on her though, that she's dealing with it and it's still worth her time. "I uh.." he turns so he's no longer leaning on the counter, his voice dropping as he moves closer to her "met someone... recently... that um, told me they were in the uh," he clears his throat "industry? In person... It sounded like they are carrying some weight with them from it... You're not... are you doing okay?"
Rory shook her head, glancing at Tommy. “I give you permission to put her to work now since she is already whining about wanting a dog. I need her to see how much time and effort a pet is. Show her the gritty stuff. Make her pick up the poop.” She snickered slightly as the thought of Lou being absolutely grossed out popped into her head. “Ew. PTA. Those moms always seemed like too much from afar when I was in school… If I ever start being a helicopter parent, I need you to slap me.” The brunette was mostly kidding- she couldn’t imagine getting over-involved in the school like that. How could she with the limited time on her hands anyways, right? “The other thing is good. No problems.” Her tone was nonchalant as she knew how much Tommy disliked talking about the subject. Although her eyebrows rose as he became quiet and continued talking. “You… did?” Curiosity was pushing Rory to ask more about how that subject even came up, but she decided against it. “I- well, in person would be a whole other ball game… no pun intended.” She gave a small shrug. “Most of the time I just.. try not to think about the people viewing my profile and videos. They’re ‘followers’, not people I have to see in real life.” She paused. “That.. sounds pretty superficial when I say it out loud.”
It was a beautiful and sunny Saturday afternoon with both Maddox girls having nothing to do, so it was decided that it would be a beach day. Sunscreen had just been reapplied for the second time since they got there and Louise was getting better and better at getting the sand to stay intact to attempt a sandcastle. Rory had just walked to the edge of the water to cool off a bit when she realized that her towel was being picked up by a gust of wind. “Shit,” she muttered before running after it. “Can you grab that towel?!” She yelled at no one in particular, just hoping that someone would notice her struggle.

"Has she started calling the trash 'rubbish' yet?" Tommy asks, at the mention of Bluey. "I saw a video of some kid with a full on Australian accent because of that show. They were American," he adds the last part to clarify. "Pretty sure the same thing happened with that British pig show." Though Bluey was far superior than Pepper Pig, at least for Tommy who had sat through both with his niece many times in the last few years. "Sounds familiar. It's only going to get worst. Wait until she wants to be signed up for sports and all that stuff. You'll become a soccer mum in no time." Tommy chuckles, imagining Rory with a mini- van." Everything good for you and her?" he prompts. "I mean... I know you have money sorted..." he trails off, not bringing up where her biggest income came from, before picking back up "but if you need support elsewhere you call me. If it ever feels too much, I am here to help."
”Not yet, but I won’t be surprised. She mostly just keeps asking for a blue heeler so she can name it Bingo. And I have to keep turning her down because we couldn’t handle a dog around here,” Rory shook her head gently. “Oh thanks for that.” She said sarcastically. “I am not becoming a soccer mom… I’m way too cool for that.” The brunette nodded, leaning against the kitchen island. “I know that, and we both appreciate you in case you didn’t know that,” she replied, reaching out to poke his arm. “But we’re good right now… I actually got Lou into a summer camp thankfully so I won’t have to cut too many shifts at the cafe.”
"Probably somewhere at dads." Tommy hasn't a clue what they're going to find upon his demise, he's sure anything with value was either sold off or forgotten by the old man. But family photos? He hopes those linger somewhere, placed in dusty albums by their mother. "She ever had the stranger danger talk? She's already walking and talking, might be worth it if you haven't."
Rory drew a breath in as she focused on the dinner again. It wasn’t common for them to bring up their father, so the few times that Tommy did usually caught her off guard. “That makes sense.” She replied plainly. A short silence came into the room before she heard Lou yell from the couch. “MOMMY! Can I watch Bluey? PLEASE!” She snickered as she wiped her hands on her apron. “Fine, just until dinner though!” Sticking the nuggets in the oven, she nodded. “I mean, we’ve talked about it before... a little. She’s more fearless suddenly now though. Maybe too much. So I probably need to have a longer talk about it now.”
"Now, don't let it get to your head too much about you being my favorite! I don't want to be responsible for the big ego boost," he shot back with a grin. "But as long as it still tastes good, I think I'll somehow survive. It just might be a struggle." After all, the coffee was the reason that he found himself stopping by, it only made sense that it still be delicious. Letting out a softer laugh, Jason nodded his head, "might be kind of mean to ask you to make the coffee and then hang out -- what's your poison? Or is this the kind of order that I should maybe consider writing down?" He knew how complicated some people could be with their coffee orders, especially compared to someone like him, who walked in and knew his order immediately, with no adjustments what so ever.
“Too late. I have to have coffee with you now just to wait for my head to stop swelling with pride, so I’ll be able to get out the door,” she shrugged gently with a small laugh. “It would be, that’s true. I’d survive somehow if I had.” Rory couldn’t help but crack up again for a moment. “No, don’t worry. I save my complicated drinks for when I can make them myself. I’ll take an Iced vanilla latte. Simple and sweet.”
Livvy knew how much that hug meant the moment that Rory threw her arms around her, feeling a grin spread across her face as she hauled the other woman in against her. There were just certain friends who were hug friends, and that was Livvy and Rory. It didn't matteer how much time had passed, when they had last seen one another. What mattered is that she wanted to give her friend a great big hug. "I'm good! I've been working at the petting zoo, so I finally escaped into civilization," and had no regrets about that, enjoying the fact that she was now getting to spend time with her friends all the same. "How about you? Gotten up to anything fun yet? And is Louise enjoying herself, too?" It was hard to believe how big the little girl was getting, every single time that she saw her. But time flew when you were having fun, that was a lesson that Livvy had learned a long time ago, especially where kids were concerned.
“You? Around animals? I’m shocked,” Rory replied with a small laugh. “How has that been though? Any mishaps? I remember when Lou was three, she kept trying to pull the goat’s hair… We were lucky they didn’t kick her.” It wasn’t the first or last time that her daughter had gotten into mischief. “I ate some fried goods, that was fun. And I was going to try the darts game for a stuffed animal but decided to let Tommy win her something… or if he can’t, then it’s not my fault.” She joked. “She found some friends from her kindergarten class and went off running around with them and a parent of one of them… so I’m pretty sure she’s having a great time.”

"You are the worst best sister," Tommy huffs, rolling his eyes, overly fond of this lame banter. "Probably something about it being magical. I remember you having your own unicorn stage." Tommy scratches his beard as he looks between daughter and mother. Rory may as well have cloned herself at this point. "She is a handful but I've got her. Might tie a balloon on her for added benefit. Plus, it's Merrock. Everyone knows whose kid that is, but I'll write my number on her arm or something for emergency."
A snicker came from her as she heard Tommy’s retort. Rory cringed for a moment at the thought of her decked out in as many unicorn things as Louise somehow had now. “Yikes. Are there pictures? I would like to burn them,” she said, half-jokingly. He had a point; Rory had already moved back to Merrock before she had Louise so by this point in time, everyone knew the small, light brown haired girl belonged to the one and only Rory Maddox. “I like both ideas. Let’s do both. I’ll get a unicorn balloon and a sharpie.”
Mandy was enjoying the bash, with an ice cream cone in hand. It was fun to get out there in the sunshine, and it was summer after all! Part of the reason why she loved it so much was because she could wear some cute outfits and sandals around. “Rory!” She gushed, upon seeing her friend. “How are you enjoying the festival? We should do something fun.”
Rory was idly eating some popcorn as she watched Lou with Tommy trying to win a giant stuffed animal. She couldn't help but laugh at her tall brother and her tiny daughter knowing that these kind of games were always rigged. Although if anyone was going to win one of them, it was going to be Tommy for Lou. The brunette turned when she heard her name and her face lit up as she saw Mandy. "Hey Mandy! It's... an experience. I feel like I'm terrified at how independent Louise is this year..." She nodded with a smile. "Ooo I like the sound of that. What's your idea?"
