@aceromanticperfection lets talk about it. no theres never an implication or outright statement about gwens gender identity (which is why i used the qualifier "subtextually"). but i believe theres a strong transgender reading of unbelievable gwenpool.

unbelievable gwenpool is about self-determination and empathy and the future. gwen is listless, unmotivated in the real world. she cant hold down a job. she didnt graduate high school. shes alone even in her house with her family. and the second she steps into marvel world shes like fuck yes... time to become a superhero with no training or powers beyond a lot of meta knowledge. this is a transition narrative to me. after undergoing this massive earth-shattering change in her life she kind of ends up on the bottom of the world. shes cut adrift from her privileged family and place to stay and gets press ganged into mercenary work for fuckin MODOK. and yet through all of it shes so happy. she loves this new her. kind of. but theres no doubt in her that this is the life for her. she doesnt turn away from it even when the modok gang disbands or when miles and friends come back from the future to kill her. she loves being a superhero and shes going to do it forever, even though it's hard and she has to struggle every second to stay alive and grab more cameo appearances and making out with quentin quire (wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy). being gwenpool is the only way she feels she can be alive. and this is about fictionality and all that but in my personal experience this is a very transgender feeling. and the last issue of unbelievable is so nice. future gwen comes back and is like it was all worth it gwen. everything you did mattered and you were so important. because you were you. and you werent what people expected you to be or wanted you to be. "you're more in control than you realize". even the concept of a future self coming back to comfort you if only just to say that itll all work out and you will be alright in the end is a fantasy with a particular transgender flavor. the way gwen feels about herself and her specific philosophy has a sense of self-assurance and radical transformative freedom that (in my personal experience/opinion) aligns with a transgender worldview. i see myself in gwen and maybe im projecting but she means a lot to me because of these things. shes who she is, and she fucks around and makes mistakes but its all in the service of who she is/wants to be. everything she does is self-affirming because the only thing she has in marvel world is herself and for her, to live is to be self-affirming. if she wasnt she would die. or be written out or whatever.
