I've been thinking a lot about how early mk2 pineapple grenades were a cast-iron body filled with flaked smokeless gunpowder instead of TNT. Yeah, the TNT was a lot more powerful and effective. But. Just straight gunpowder worked well enough. Grenades are shockingly simple. At the same time, not as fatal as one would expect. I would carry a hand grenade around in my pocket, if I could.

I would carry an irritant grenade, ideally, but anything pyrotechnic is a DD. Which means it would need to be aerosolized. Belladonna was used as a chemical weapon by Hannibal. I wonder how much opium you'd need to make a zonksmoke grenade. Wonder what abundant alkaloids would make an effective smoke weapon. Hypothetically. Theory crafting.
