Every once and a while you get a glimpse of the person you could be. Grab that. Hold on to that. Work for it. Nothing is out of reach.

“Those patient Hufflepuffs are true and unafraid of toil.” ― J.K. Rowling
Thich Nhat Hanh calls his practice of yes “smile yoga.” He suggests bringing a slight but real smile to our lips many times throughout the day, whether we are meditating or simply stopping for a red light. “A tiny bud of a smile on your lips,” writes Thich Nhat Hanh, “nourishes awareness and calms you miraculously … your smile will bring happiness to you and to those around you.” The power of a smile to open and relax us is confirmed by modern science. The muscles used to make a smile actually send a biochemical message to our nervous system that it is safe to relax the flight, fight or freeze response. A smile is the yes of unconditional friendliness that welcomes experience without fear.

2017 is a good year to start trying. To push yourself and dare to be ambitious. Try new things, make a lot of mistakes, and keep trying even after you’ve fallen.

small ways to feel better
make the easiest to-do list ever and complete it. write it all down, on paper. stuff like, fluff a pillow, wash a fork, pick up socks. don’t add more than five items to complete. cross each one off as you do it. bam, accomplishment.
dress up nicely and go to a grocery store or library or coffee shop. it’s nice to feel good-looking in a non-competitive public space.
hold a rock or twig or leaf. close your eyes and concentrate on natural textures for a minute.
sit in the pitch dark. turn off screens and lights. i even cover up the blinking red lights on the modem and stuff. enjoy pitch blackness for a minute.
alternatively, turn off all lights and screens and light a single candle. i like to look at a single flame in the pitch dark. it’s very calming. incense works too - you can watch the single red point of light as the incense burns down, and smell the scented smoke.
related: smell something nice. perfume, candles, a ripe peach, some tea.
hold a mug of warm water. close your eyes and concentrate on the warmth on your palms.
sit on a public bench or your front steps and watch strangers for a while. you don’t have to do anything but observe them. just watch other people living their lives.
