beautiful women will tell you with a straight face "yeah Umineko is like two hundred hours long, but it's even better the second time through" as if there's any world where that's a reasonable thing to say. and the thing is, they'll be correct.

all these years later umineko is still so formative to me because it was the first work i ever saw that very directly and openly engaged with media literacy as a means to navigate the world with. a good chunk of the narrative is spent building up what is essentially a tookit for approaching different kinds of literary techniques and perspectives and at the end it basically asks you to just go and use that knowledge elsewhere from now on too. it's really compelling to me in a way i feel like i only see very rarely

a lot of stories are about stories but very few will make the act of learning how to engage with them and care for them a core part of their thesis. it takes you by the hand and explains everything in excruciating detail and to some extent i'm really glad that it isn't trimmed down because through that it ends up trying its hardest to help everyone bridge the gap no matter how long it takes
