Well I have made it obvious I am a freak for cannabis, but this week I would like to hit you all with some much needed food safety information. Salmonella bacteria are microscopic organisms which can be found in the digestive tracts of animals and humans, particularly reptiles. They are commonly transmitted through contaminated foods that come from animal sources like poultry, beef, and dairy. They can survive high temperatures and should be cooked at a temperature higher then 165F for a minimum of 15 seconds. Fresh produce can also be a source through soil contamination and what makes this bacteria a huge threat to ready made foods. This could be why we have seen a huge recall from the US by Thomson International Inc. Affected provinces and territories include: Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories and Yukon. Practicing safe hygiene habits including hand-washing (for at least 20 seconds) before handling raw meat and fresh produce, as well as after, and making sure food is cooked to a safe internal temperature can help keep us safe. Be sure to wash the produce both before and after cutting as well. Knives have been known to push contaminants further into food. 2020 has taught us all about caring for the vulnerable around us. Young children, pregnant women, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems may contract serious and sometimes deadly infections from salmonella. Healthy people may experience short-term symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. Long-term complications may include severe arthritis. According to the recall notice, food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make people sick. When in doubt, always, TOSS IT OUT! Protect yourself. Watch out for each other and always stay safe! #Ediblechef #foodie #foodhygiene #knowledgeispower #staysafe #foodsafety #haacp #foodscience #ontario (at Ottawa Capital Of Canada) https://www.instagram.com/p/CECdI1PMYQ_/?igshid=nr6remydfkmm
