The Federation of American Scientists and the Pacific Islands Society recognize that young experts in foreign policy could play a key role in PIC engagement on counter-proliferation and disarmament issues. We are therefore launching the “Pacific Young Leaders on Disarmament Project” to provide these young experts in foreign policy with an international forum to voice their ideas. Specifically, Pacific Young Leaders on Disarmament will be asked to draft a hypothetical statement from their country to the Conference on Disarmament that advances their country’s national security interests against the CD schedule. The Federation for American Scientists will then post these statements on the FAS Strategic Security Blog. At the conclusion of the project, the statements will be bound and the full collection will be delivered to the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva, Switzerland to coincide with the start of the 2014 session.

The “Pacific Young Leaders on Disarmament Project” is currently accepting applicants from the following PIC member states Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Papua New Guinea, Palau, Niue, Republic of Marshall Islands, and Tuvalu as well as French Polynesia, New Caledonia, American Samoa, Tokelau, Guam, Timor-Leste, Wallis and Futuna, Hawai`i, and the Northern Mariana Islands.

To put forth an application for consideration, please email your resume, statement of interest, and a draft “Statement to the Conference on Disarmament” to Eddie Walsh at [email protected]. The closing date for applications is April 30, 2013. Please use the subject: “PYL 2013 Application” when applying and ensure that the draft statement is of similar length and substance to those regularly provided to the CD by member states (See CD Website for examples.)

Over the next year, the Society will work to have the works of selected artists featured at a “Pacific Artists: The Next Generation” cultural event being planned for the spring of 2014 at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The Society will also reach out to media to spread word of the artists’ recognition.

In December 2013, the Pacific Security Scholars’ articles and opinion pieces will be collectively collected, bound, printed, and then presented to the diplomatic missions of Pacific Islands Forum. The collection will also be deposited with the Pacific archives in the United Kingdom.

The Pacific Islands Society is now accepting applications for its Pacific Security Scholars Program. Students from the following countries, territories, prefectures, and states are encourage to apply: Fiji, Tonga, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Vanuatu, Kiribati, Nauru, Solomon Islands, New Zealand, Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Niue, Republic of Marshall Islands, Tuvalu, French Polynesia, New Caledonia, American Samoa, Tokelau, Guam, Timor-Leste, Wallis and Futuna, Hawai`i, Okinawa, and the Northern Mariana Islands.
