people aren't even exaggerating indeed is literally like that. walmart attendant $13 an hour, target attendant $13 an hour, AI dick sucker $40 an hour, home depot attendant $13 an hour, guy who designs bullets that can only kill children $160k a year plus benefits, gas station manager $18 an hour
If youβve ever had a menstrual period, did you get your first one at age 11 or younger?
(Apparently the average age of oneβs first period is around 12, but Iβm curious to see where the demographics are here, and if itβs been trending younger in younger generations! I had my first period just shy of my 10th birthday π)

Several wildfires are forcing members of a number of First Nations to flee their homes in northern Ontario.
βI had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,β said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). βWe literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town. βOnce we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place. We had to run to the beach and once we got there, it was only moments before the fire had jumped over the (train) track and was coming for us.β
it has since been confirmed that namaygoosisagagun first nation has completely burnt to the ground. if you would like to help the community navigate an ongoing crisis, i urge you to donate to the anishinabek nation 7th generation, a registered charity seeking to improve the lives of first nations people. donations are going directly to members of namaygoosisagagun first nation.

Whatttt is with the tendency of Tumblr users to seek absolution from every single person who offhandedly posts about disagreeing with something they do
I say this not unkindly, but firmly: to function as a member of a social species, you have to get comfortable with the idea that not everyone will like you
if i was a soccer player i'd simply kick that ball in the goal instead of wasting everyone's time

zendaya wearing real 3000-year old ancient iranian earrings with no known track of provenance to the odyssey premiere. nasty work. even worse than the kim kardashian marilyn dress to me. they could have promoted modern greek jewelry designers but chose to do this instead. very tacky at best. especially in this geopolitical climate
encyclopaedia iranica entry on 'ziwiye', covering the alleged discovery of the site and the subsequent plunder of it.
there is something perfectly intentional in the way flike managan does his adaptations. it's not like he's careless or stupid or just wants to cash in on name brand recognition. shirley jackson does not have name brand recognition, at least not among his target demographic. he's genuinely in conversation with the texts he adapts, and is making very specific choices, except these choices all live in service of redeeming the name of the nuclear biological family and making sad little tut tut noises at the big mean bigots.
sometimes if you're lucky he'll chuckle and say well yes my dear old mother is a bit racist. but really she's a loving wife so why does it matter. also people of colour are never depicted in his #1 artistic priority (loving marriages with children) but whoops don't look to closely into that!! isn't rahul kohli a smokeshow?
anyway this is why it pisses me off when people say "it's good if you watch his shows divorced from the original book!" because. well because they're still soppy, spineless, and only good for the vfx artists to flex their skills. but also it's not just an unrelated story. his adaptation work is bad because he specifically set out to remedy the paranoia of the source material with the power of church weddings and group therapy.
he has not sanded the edges off just for marketability's sake! i really believe that he has a keen and sincere artistic vision which is repelled by the disgusting shit that made henry james and shirley jackson's work so good. his work does not agree that there is violence in a caretaker's total authority. it does not tolerate ambiguity. it is obsessed with innocence and righteous suffering. incidentally, this taming of the screw makes his junk more marketable. but that's just a side effect! he is just a symptom! maybe i hate the environment that let him be successful and not the man himself! and also the monologues fucking suck.
despite my flapathy i am forced to acknowledge his new ventures once a year whenever this post picks up a modest few notes. anyway this year i'd like to recommend 'Turning the Screw of Interpretation' by Shoshana Felman, an incredible essay about the relevance of psychoanalysis to literary criticism. I recall the show making allusions to ideas touched on in this essay, but don't ask me where or how. I've since deleted all memory of his work.
but in light of the new adaptation (my condolences.) here's a section about ambiguity in Henry James's work:

If your business can only be reached and all info about it only be accessed via Facebook or Instagram, know that it isnβt reachable or accessible AT ALL.
The whole metaverse can no longer be properly viewed without an account and I am definitely not making one just to see your contact info or opening hours.
Get a fucking WEBSITE. It can be just a static landing page with the relevant information. But get off the metaverse!
i need to stop spending money on takeout but to do that iβd have to ask for groceries and then id have to actually follow thru and make the food and eat the food even though i might not be in the mood for it that day
