AU thought where Mordecai, through the help of the Open Intellect Action Network, gets his *non-combatant* tag removed after he becomes Donut’s manager.
With that removal of the *non-combatant* tag removes several of his restrictions. But it also means that if he wants to make sure he’s in the same safe rooms as the Royal Court he has to travel with them. So he has to trek along with them, cursing and complaining the entire way that he misses his guide-only town and his room and not having to walk all over creation.
During the Signet plotline on the third floor Mordecai is knocked out as well and when Carl wakes up he can’t wake him up either because of the Water Lily spell. He has to figure out everything by himself.
Signet suggests that Mordecai is his lover and Carl doesn’t even try to change her mind about it because he doesn’t want her to keep trying to charm him or have sex with him.
When Donut and Mordecai awake, Mordecai is startled by Carl’s recap of what happened. And that Carl never once thought of sacrificing Mordecai or trading his life for Donut’s to protect her.
Adding more to this AU because it's actually turning into a fic at this rate:
Mordecai is able to pick his own races at the start of each floor and uses Donut's class selections to tailor which races he picks. After the Bubble level and him finally getting to fly in his original Skyfowl form again he chooses other races that have flight abilities for every single floor afterwards.

Floor 3: Incubus (the form was picked for him and he can't change it until the next floor) Floor 4: Cornet (gets a hint from Odette about echoes being useful for attacks) Floor 5: His original Skyfowl form (because they're in the Air Quadrant and he needs to be able to catch Donut or Carl if worst comes to worse) Floor 6: Pixie OR Homunculus (want to keep him small on the floor like the Pocket Kuma) Floor 7: Changeling Blank (unable to select because Donut rushed through her class selection before Prepotente broke the floor) Floor 8: Gynosphinx (counts as a minion on this floor and needs to ensure that he can tank damage, uses the Gynosphinx's stats to max out his strength and constitution stats) Floor 9: Peryton (something similar enough to his Skyfowl form so that he is most comfortable during Faction Wars but also able to use heavy melee attacks) Floor 10: Harpy (speed and dexterity as well as increased charisma to better match Donut and Carl's increased strength-based attacks) Floor 11: Imp (very brief floor, picked the first thing he could think of and search)
