Let's Get the Rhythm of the Hands. This piece was inspired by #BlackGirlJoy. Do you remember your favorite hand clap games? Who did you play with? There was a whole world where kids passed down songs, dances, claps to other kids.
Part of our Hoodoo heritage is passing on our songs, dances and stories orally. Even if the words and moves change from generation to generation and from state to state, there is an essence and energy that remains.
“...Take a peach, take a plum, take a stick a' bubble gum. No peach, no plum, no stick a' bubble gum. I like cof—fee I like tea...”
“last night & the night before..I met my boyfriend at the candy store.. he bought me ice cream, he bought me cake, he brought me home with a bel-ly ache..”
“down down baby, down by the roller coaster...”
“..let's get the rhythm of the feet.. let's get the rhythm of the hooooot dog..”
“bobo skeewahten tahten, ah ah, ah ah, boom boom boom”
numbers; rockin robin; Miss Lucy; Miss mary mack. I don't think I ever did “Makidada” but of course I sang along when the Color Purple came on.
