Lidar is not just a laser based radar. Many people think LIDAR is for 3d mapping like for self driving cars (not tesla though, those are fucking garbage, all those self driving fatal accidents are all because of no LIDAR).
Lidar can also simultaneously 3d map and detect specific chemical compounds. you can map a forest and see the chemical makeup of the tree leaves and see what diseases the trees have. you can also remove the trees and see archaeological sites from millenia ago.
LIDAR is pretty powerful. They should use LIDAR on crime scenes for forensics. you have a murder in a house. FBI sets up a tripod in a room and punches a button. you have a 3d map of the house with every chemical on every surface of every room. to do certain spots like under a desk, you probably would do a second pass with a mobile robot or several kinds of mobile robots.
they should also do this for all the surrounding areas, including multiple adjacent properties. like a criminal could have trespassed and walked through several properties to get to the house to murder someone.
Finally the atmosphere is a hassle for lasers, LIDAR can probably only go out 2km right now i had heard. but they really need to get Satellites doing LIDAR mapping.
The self driving cars can also do LIDAR chemical analysis when the prices on those kinds of LIDAR units come down. but this DATA should not be proprietary and owned by anyone. it needs to be regulated and controlled by the people. So that researchers can access it for stuff like public health or university research. it is after all the public space and the public domain should not be owned by a corporation or individual. Law enforcement and gov agencies would also be able to do their thing too. And the public should get access to this database as well.
I like LIDAR. it's like Geordi Laforge's visor. that thing that looks like a plastic hair piece but on his face.
