I keep thinking their student and mentor bond must have happened while Genji was breaking down from the inside, trying to not show his inner turbulence by acting cold towards Zenyatta when he offered to help.. So when Genji finally broke down from doubts and self loathing, Zenyatta probably told him to forgive himself, being selfless can also be towards oneself too.(or idk insert something smart and wise here I’m bad at this) Therefore, Genji accepting the fact that he needs help, and that Zenyatta promises to be there would have meant everything at that time…
