One of our team recently had to add a small amount of #dairy back to their diet for health reasons. There were only a few options locally and it made it even harder to decide. One was mass produced and in recyclable cardboard receptacles (Lucerne). One was locally produced but packaged in only plastic milk jugs of various sizes (Blackwell Dairy). The last was made only a little farther away, but came in glass with a deposit. However, it was double the cost. Wouldn't it be great if all of our favourite packaged products came affordably and responsibly with a small deposit? We love this idea. What's your favourite reusable shopping/product container? BATTLE LOST! Don't you just hate it when you're out enjoying Nature and someone's garbage keeps staring you down? This one was FRESH too! Who else thinks that fast food chains like @timhortons should charge a takeaway fee? Or even better, give a discount for bringing your own takeaway containers?! Unfortunately, here in the land of maple syrup, beavers, and good handshakes... We still have #litterbugs. Even worse, people have an addiction to Tim Horton's "coffee" and we all too often find these cups in our forests, on our shorelines, and in our backcountry. BATTLE WON! When you go out of town for a few nights and the great little Hotel you got is giving away #PlasticFree Hallowe'en gifts! A recycled-paper coffee cup with orange tissue paper around it, and filled with discount coupons, smarties (in cardboard) and a pen! What a treat! DO IT YOURSELF! This 20 minute #DIYrecipe for fresh crabapple juice is to DIE for. 🤤 And the best part? Always plastic free! 1 portion ripe crabapples 1 portion water 1. Add the crabapples to a pot 2. Add equal parts water (so they're floating) 3. Bring to a boil and boil for 10 minutes. 4. Simmer for another 10 minutes. 5. Let cool... 6. One of our warriors in arms shared this with us: "If you go to the store, and you want to have vegetables be a part of your diet, you have no other option. And every time you go shopping, you have to break your own heart because you have no choice." In this case, this beautiful Chilli Con Carne bowl was made from coconut husks and served with a wooden spoon. Safe to say it was a beautiful favourite at Denmark's @copenhell music festival. BATTLE WON! Whether you're out gardening, hiking, or just reading a book, let's make this #EarthDay a special one. With all the negative news out there these days about all kinds of horrible things happening to our planet, the people on it, and the animals that inhabit it, it's hard not to get a little depressed and overwhelmed. However, since we started this little project of ours we've noticed a huge shift in the way that people are thinking and the way they're living their lives without plastic. And in only 2 years, that's a fantastic change! Even businesses are taking notice that without positive change they will lose customers to more progressive and environmentally conscious initiatives. DO IT YOURSELF! This 60 second #DIYrecipe for Mayonnaise is to DIE for. 🤤 And the best part? Plastic Free! 450ml - Light Olive Oil 2 - Farm Fresh Eggs 2-3 - Cloves of Garlic (Crushed) 1.5 - Squeezed Lemons 1 - Heaping Tablespoon of French Mustard (or mustard powder) 1-2 - Medium spoons of salt 1. Add all the ingredients to your cup or jar. 2.Let sit for a moment so they separate. 3. Use your stick blender or emulsifier on high for 10 seconds at the bottom of your cup. 4. Blend the rest of the ingredients on low by gliding up and down inside your cup. 5. Ensure it is thick and creamy and you're done! It's really that easy! BATTLE WON! We always love a good #deal. And when it's waste-free it's even better! How many people do you know that would throw away a printer then buy a new one simply because replacing the ink was so expensive. The unfortunate thing is that so many people do this because often times the new printer itself will be as cheap as replacing the ink. $35 - $50 to replace cartridges?! That's absurd! Why companies do this is beyond me. However, we at Drop Dead Plastic have discovered the best thing EVER! @costco wholesale has the most affordable ink refill on the market! Not only that, they use only premium quality ink from their photo centre for the refills. They weigh your empty cartridge, fill it up, and you pay per gram. BATTLE LOST! We recently read a fantastic article posted by @plasticpollutes about the power of #nameandshame. In summary it showed that naming and shaming online actually works! Especially if you're talking to companies that you generally buy products from, and would like to continue doing so. In summary, let them know that you love their product, their pricing, they're adds... Whatever... But then let them know that until they change the way the package their products and do business, you'll be taking your money elsewhere. Either directly or by tagging them publicly in your post. For Example: @loblawson and @realcdnss... As much as we love your @preschoice products, this one is an epic Fail in our books. Dry pasta in a bag inside a box? Until you do away with the senseless plastic in your packaging we will no longer be spending our hard earned money on your products and will be shopping elsewhere.
