Almost immediately, he panics. Fear strikes his chest as he sits up, searching for your figure. Sure, you'd had an argument before bed, but you hadn't left, right?
Right?
When he stumbles into the living room, about to run out the door and see if your car still sits in the driveway, the figure on the couch makes him stop dead in his tracks. Were you really so upset that you couldn't even bear to sleep next to him?
He doesn't want to wake you, but he can't allow this, seeing your hunched form on the not-great-for-sleeping couch, tucked under a too thin blanket. Crossing the room quietly, he scoops you into his hold, lifting you from the couch.
You stir, but miracously don't wake, relaxing as he takes small steps up to the bedroom.
He's made it up in his mind to sleep in the guestroom once he lays you down on your side of the shared bed. Zayne wants to respect your wishes after all, even if he knows he won't get a minute of sleep being apart from you.
But when he goes to pull away, your grip on his shirt tightens. Before he can unclench your fingers, you tug, and he finds himself climbing into the bed beside you.
The pinched expression on your face eases, shifting closer to him. He can't bring himself to move away, and instinct has his arms wrapping around you. Something in his chest eases the moment he holds you, the tension leaving his body.
"I don't like going to sleep mad." Your words nearly make him jump. He'd believed you were asleep this whole time, but of course you were awake.
"Me either." He murmurs, holding you a little tighter. You relax into him, melding your body against his in a way that sends butterflies through his stomach.
With your warmth pressed close to him, he can finally sleep.
summary: your closest in-game friend wants to meet in person and claims to be the chairman of the company that designed the full-dive gear. now he just has to prove it
wc: 4k
content: just a normal tech company, virtual reality, online friends to lovers, fluff
A soft, twinkling chime rang in your ears as the glowing blue mushroom dissolved in your palm, a floating green notification popping up in your field of vision: [Lunar Fungus x3 added to inventory].
The full-dive tech was so flawlessly advanced that you could feel the lingering cool dampness of the soil on your fingertips. It was a complete escape from reality.
You reached up, lightly rubbing the tip of your elongated ears. While you had kept your avatarâs body as similar to your real-world self as you could to avoid the jarring switch between bodies, you had allowed yourself this one fantasy trait. Under your fingertips, the cartilage felt completely real, twitching slightly in response to the ambient rustle of the digital forest.
A sudden glass-like shatter interrupted the calm, immediately followed by the metallic clinking of dropped loot hitting the forest floor. You looked over at the commotion in time to see a hulking figure step out from the brush. It was HowlKo. His massive, muscular frame carried a greatsword like it was nothing more than a feather. He would have been an impressive sight if it werenât for the way his heavy burgundy tail thrashed behind him the millisecond his golden eyes locked onto your form still kneeling next to the patch of mushrooms you had spent the last hour foraging for.
âHey, Ko,â you said casually, turning your attention back to your task, continuing to pluck the fungus from the root.
The frantic wagging of his burgundy tail stopped dead, and his golden eyes blinked at you in disbelief, his jaw dropping open. He lowered his greatsword, resting the heavy tip against the dirt.
ââHey, Ko?ââ he repeated, his voice carrying an offended whine. âReally? Thatâs it? No âThank you, Ko, for saving me from those goblinsâ?â
âI do not sound like that,â you protested.
He continued as if he hadnât heard you. âI defeated the whole mob for you, and all I get is âhey?â Unbelievable.â His fluffy ears pinned back against his hair, pouting. You rolled your eyes, a laugh bubbling in your throat at his antics.
You put on a grandiose voice. âYouâre my hero, Ko! How can I ever repay you?â
He pretended to think about it, but he already had a request in mind. âGimme half of those mushrooms.â
âNo way!â you objected, the playful tone dropping instantly into a horrified hiss, clutching your inventory pouch close to your chest. âDo you have any idea how long it took to find these? Find your own!â
âThey would have been forfeit if that mob had gotten you, so I could be asking for all of them,â he rebutted.
âThatâs assuming I couldnât handle them myself. Which I totally could have.â
âI have way more attack points than youââ
âAnd I have more hit points, so whatâs your point?â
âJust gimme the mushrooms,â he pleaded. âIâll trade you half the goblin loot.â
âNo deal,â you hummed, popping the last of the mushrooms into your inventory with a victorious chime. âI don't need rusty goblin armor, and I have plenty of gold. I need these for my alchemy level.â
Ko let out a dramatic, exaggerated groan, throwing his head back so hard his fluffy ears flopped pitifully against his hair. He stomped over, his heavy boots rustling the grass, and plopped his massive frame onto the dirt next to you. He didn't even bother to sheath his sword properly, letting it clatter to the side. âYou're so mean to me,â he whined, his tail giving a singular sad pat against the earth. He leaned sideways, heavily dropping his shoulder against yours. âI log onto this server every day just to be your personal bodyguard, and you won't even share a few measly mushrooms.â
You laughed, the tip of your sensitive ears twitching at the sudden warmth of his avatar leaning against you. âIf you're so starved for attention, why don't you go bother the players in the town square?â
Ko huffed, his golden eyes narrowing as he turned his head to look at you, his tone shifting from whiny to something softer. Tentative, even. âBecause they aren't you. Besides, you come over to my cabin all the time to cook and log off. If weâre going to spend hours bickering over digital mushroomsâŠâ he paused, his tail giving a nervous twitch. â...why don't we just do it over actual dinner? In the real world?â
Your smile dropped as the weight of his question settled between you. You looked at him, at the golden eyes staring at you expectantly, the ones you had come to be so familiar with, and felt a pang of guilt in your chest.
âKoâŠâ you started softly, shifting your weight on the grass. âYou know I love spending time with you here, but I don't think Iâm comfortable with meeting in person.â
His burgundy ears perked up in a flash of confusion, his head tilting. âWhy not?â he asked. âYou already know me.â
âI know HowlKo,â you corrected. âBut the real world is different. You could be literally anyone behind that avatar, and reality doesn't have the built-in player protections that Whispering Woods does.â
A heavy, stunned silence fell over the clearing. Ko sat frozen. He looked heartbroken, his fluffy tail dropping flat against the dirt with a pathetic thump. He let out a long sigh from behind the mask. âOkay, fair point,â he conceded, his tone shifting to something hopeful once again. He reached up, his large, clawed gloves unlacing the leather straps at the back of his head. âBut what if you already know exactly who I am?â
With a soft click of the gameâs apparel physics, the wolf snout mask dissolved into light. You blinked, tracking the movement as the pixelated shower of light dissipated. With the mask no longer blocking his features, you could finally see the strikingly sharp jawline, the perfectly sculpted lips, and the flawless symmetry of Chairman Valkoâthe very man who headed the tech company that had designed the full-dive gear you were currently using.
For a few seconds, all you could do was stare at the newly revealed lower half of his face. Then, a snort escaped you, followed by bright, airy laughter that echoed through the clearing. You leaned back on your hands, shaking your head in amusement.
âOh my god, Ko, no way,â you giggled, completely missing the pouty expression on his gorgeous features. âA Valko mod? Are you serious? You really customized yourself to look like the EonCore CEO? How much real-world cash did you drop just to roleplay him?â
Koâs jaw slackenedâ a handsome jaw, you had to admit, even if it belonged to a counterfeit billionaire. His virtual wolf ears drooped so much they practically disappeared into his hair. âI didn't buy a skinââ
âSure you didn't,â you laughed, reaching over to pat his ridiculously perfect cheek. âIt's a great prank, really. 10 out of 10 for originality.â
âButââ he started again, but you weren't listening, your attention instead taken by the timer you had set popping into view.
âGotta go, Ko. Have food in the oven. See you tomorrow!â you said cheerfully, logging out before he could respond and leaving him in the clearing to ponder the best way to prove his identity to you.
â â â
When you dived back into the server the next evening, HowlKo was already waiting for you, his wolf mask back in place. He was pacing back and forth, his heavy tail thrashing behind him in a blur of agitation. The moment your avatar materialized, he stormed over.
âIâm gonna prove it to you,â he declared, skipping any sort of greeting.
You raised an eyebrow. âProve what? That you're a secret billionaire?â
Ko didnât answer. Instead, he swiped his hand aggressively through the air, summoning a glowing gold developer console that regular players absolutely did not have access to.
He typed in a command, and, with a deafening crash, a veritable mountain of rare items dropped to the ground, more than youâd ever seen in all your time playing the game combined.
âSee! Look! Just a few clicks and I can have anything! Other players canât do that, but I can.â
You gazed in awe upon the assortment of gold, gems, potions, even mythical weapons and armor. âWow, Ko. Youâre a skilled hacker,â you commented, totally missing the way his shoulders slumped in disappointment. âSeriously, though, be careful, or the actual chairman is going to ban your account, and I don't want to lose my favorite foraging partner.â
Ko felt like he was going to scream. What would it take to prove it to you? A small, pathetic whine escaped his throat. âJustâŠkeep the loot,â Ko groaned, rubbing the bridge of his nose right above the snout of his mask. He gestured to the fortune surrounding you. âConsider it a gift.â
You immediately took three massive steps backwards, putting as much distance between you and the contraband Ko had summoned. âNo way. What if you get me caught for cheating, too?â
âNot how it works. And itâs already here anyway, so just take it.â
You staunchly refused, and Ko stared at you, his fluffy burgundy tail drooping. He looked so defeated that you caved, only a little, and plucked a health potion from the pile. It appeased him, if only a little, a small smile spreading under the mask. âIf you really need to get rid of it all, I know this dragon player that would love to take it off your hands.â
Valko hummed, but didn't argue that the items were intended for you. He acquiesced and asked what the player ID was, pulling up that strange navigation console. He almost scoffed when the ID pulled up one of the most pretentious usernames he had yet seen, and he had seen many. âAbysm Sovereign?â he laughed, reading the name aloud. âJust who is this guy?â
His contagious laugh ignited your own. âYou should see the rest of my friend list,â you giggled, already pulling up the list. Koâs eyes scanned it, reading names such as PntMeLk1ofUrFrnchGrls, PommePommePilot, StarBoyLumiere, and, disappointingly, Dr. Z.
With the wealth transferred to a now very pleased dragon, you and Ko set off for his player residence, a gorgeous, secluded cabin tucked away in a seldom-visited corner of the map. The property, like all player residences, was restricted to those who hadn't been invited by the owner.
Once inside, you beelined to his alchemy table, eager to use those mushrooms. While you pulled items out of your inventory, Ko threw himself on the plush velvet sofa nearby. He finally removed his mask, tossing it onto the coffee table. His large frame took up the whole couch and then some, his feet propped on one armrest while he threw an arm behind his head as a makeshift pillow. His golden eyes tracked your avatarâs every movement, his gaze unbearably fond.
âYou know,â he rumbled, âyou're lucky I let you use my crafting tables for free. Most alchemists have to rent those.â
You didn't even look up from your stirring, the corner of your lip twitching into an almost-there grin. âIâm still not sharing the mushrooms.â
âOh, come on,â he groaned. âYou can't spare just one?â
You shook your head, not even trying to hide your smug amusement, airy giggles filling the room and embedding themselves in Valkoâs fluttering heart.
By the time your brewing level flashed a celebratory [Level Up!] notification, it was getting late. You stretched your avatarâs arms, yawning. âAlright, Ko, Iâm heading out for the night. Itâs getting late.â
He sat up on the couch, his expression suddenly shifting into something serious, his intense gaze locked onto you. âTomorrow at noon,â he began, his voice uncharacteristically serious. âThere is a global EonCore Tech broadcast. Watch it.â
You blinked, throwing him a confused look, but agreed all the same.
âPromise?â he asked, his burgundy ears giving a sharp twitch.
You smiled softly at him, still wondering why he was so adamant that you watch. âYeah, yeah, I promise,â you laughed, waving a hand at him. âSee you tomorrow, Ko!â
You woke up with a groggy yawn, the phantom sensation of pointed ears still lingering as you rubbed your eyes. Glancing at the clock, your eyes widened. 11:58 AM. You scrambled for your tablet, quickly tapping onto the livestream you had promised Ko that you would watch.
The screen flickered to life, displaying a massive auditorium flooded with press. At the podium was the real Chairman Valko, so much more intimidating than your foraging partner. The one at the podium wore a suit that could probably cover your rent, his hair perfectly styled and golden eyes scanning the crowd. He also lacked the pointed ears and fluffy tail that you had become so fond of.
âAs we move into the new fiscal year, EonCore remains dedicated to the safety and experience of its players,â Valko spoke, his smooth voice echoing through the speakers. It was the same voice that usually begged you to share potion ingredients, but here, it was devoid of any hint of playfulness.
You watched him, leaning back into your pillows. You almost scoffed. As if Ko could really be-â
âHowever,â Valko continued, pausing as he looked at the center camera lens. âWith our recent update to the servers, we advise our players to exercise caution when playing the new events. You never know what kind of stray dog you might find. You may find the Lunar Fungus not worth the risk.â
Your jaw dropped, and the tablet nearly slipped from your grasp. The press in the auditorium didn't even blink, his vague warning likely sounding like a teaser for whatever new event was being added, but you knew better. A breathless, horrified gasp left your throat as your mind flashed back to the day you had first come across the wolf hybrid avatar.
Valko had wanted to test the gameplay personally, and thus HowlKo was born. The only problem? He was a disaster. You had been slowly but surely making your way through a dungeon when you heard a series of crashes. Turning around, you had found a towering, clumsy player with a wolf mask surrounded by level-two slimes he couldn't figure out how to target and bits of armor that had, up until a moment ago, been neatly displayed as a full suit.
You had sighed, easily slicing the slimes away and helping him up. From that point on, he hadn't left your side, clinging to you like a remora. He didn't know the map, he didn't know the crafting recipes, and he refused to leave your side, following along behind you everywhere you went.
âYou're like a stray dog, aren't you?â You had joked back then, watching his tail give a hesitant, hopeful wag. Youâd been inseparable since.
Back in the real world, you stared at the screen, mortified. Valko, Ko, adjusted his expensive cuffs, gave a polite nod to the press, and stepped away from the podium.
You couldn't get the VR set on fast enough, the sensory transition passing in a blur of blinding white pixels until your feet hit the wood floor of Koâs cabinâs front porch. It was your day off, which meant you had a completely open schedule. Unfortunately, this also meant that you had nothing to distract yourself from dwelling on the fact that you had been calling a tech mogul a stray dog to his face for a year. Or that you'd accused him of hacking.
You didn't even bother going inside. Instead, you dropped onto the top step of the porch, wrapping your arms around your knees as you waited for him to log in. For twenty agonizing minutes, you sat there, staring at digital grass and felt the simulated breeze blowing through the clearing Koâs cabin was situated in.
Suddenly, a chime interrupted the serenity, signaling the arrival of the owner of the cabin. In a blur of burgundy pixels, Valkoâs avatar materialized just in front of the steps leading up the porch. Your head jerked up, watching him materialize in front of you.
He was wearing his wolf snout mask again, his massive greatsword securely strapped to his back. The second his boots hit the dirt, he registered your figure sitting on his stoop. A look of shock crossed his face.
âDid you watch the broadcast?â he asked, his deep baritone carrying a smug amusement.
You buried your face in your hands, groaning, more embarrassed than you cared to admit. God, you couldn't believe you had accused him of hacking.
âAnd what did you think?â Valko prodded.
âThat Iâm an idiot,â you lamented, your voice still muffled by your hands.
He chuckled, leaning down to pull your hands away from your face, the pout on your lips so endearing he felt his heart skip a beat. With your hands still in his, he pulled you up, leading the way into the cabin.
Your cheeks flamed. All you could focus on was the way his warm hand encapsulated yours so perfectly.
Inside, he removed the mask, letting it dissolve in a cloud of pixels, revealing the sharp curve of his lips in a smirk, his fangs flashing. âYâknow, I think you should make it up to me for calling me a hacker and a liar,â he teased, gearing up to once again pester you for those damn mushrooms.
You frowned, the floor suddenly the most interesting thing in the room. An uncomfortable guilt settled in your chest from your previous words. ââM sorry, Valko,â you mumbled, barely looking up from the floorboards, like a child being scolded by a parent.
The grin fell from his face. He wasn't trying to actually make you feel bad, especially over something he wasn't even mad at. He certainly didn't want the first time he heard you say his name be because you were apologizing to him. âKo,â he corrected bluntly. âIâm still your Ko. The version that you know is the authentic one. Nothing has really changed if you don't want it to.â He spoke earnestly, desperate to rectify the slight miscommunication and salvage your image of him.
You looked at him properly this time, searching his eyes for any hint of dishonesty. Finding none, you sighed, your shoulders slumping. âWhy did you wait so long to tell me?â
He considered the question for a moment. âBecause then you would have treated me like the EonCore Tech chairman.â
You were taken aback by his answer, but considered his earlier words. He was still your Ko. âFor someone who wanted to avoid being recognized, you sure didn't change much about your avatar.â
The return of your sly grin lifted a weight from his chest. âThatâs what the mask is for, duh. Iâve seen you almost every day for a year, and you never suspected it. Even when I showed you my face, you assumed it was a skin. So obviously hiding in plain sight was a great plan, thank you.â
You rolled your eyes, happy that your companion was here to stay.
âIn all seriousness,â he began again, the brief levity broken as soon as it had been established. âI thought about what you said the other day. Iâve proved who I am, and I was serious about wanting to meet you in person. But if you're still not comfortable, would you be open to a virtual date? We can do whatever you want, right here on the server.â
His tail gave a small, hopeful wag, his eyes wide and sincere as he awaited your answer. Warmth bloomed in your chest and spread across your face to the tips of your ears. Slowly, you shook your head.
Valkoâs shoulders dropped instantly, his ears drooping and his tail becoming listless. He couldn't hide the abject disappointment fast enough. âThatâs alright,â he said, forcing a smile, wishing he had never opened his mouth.
âNo, Ko,â you laughed gently. âIâm declining the virtual date.â
He snapped his head towards you, his ears perking back up. âYou mean-â
You nodded. âIn person,â you confirmed. âIf the offer still stands.â
A beamed at you, his bright smile lighting up his whole face with unbridled joy. âThe offer absolutely stands.â
â â â
The bell above the door jingled as you stepped inside the restaurant. You had half expected some over-the-top, expensive restaurant with a month-long waiting list. Instead, Valko had sent you the address of a dimly lit, likely family-owned hole in the wall. It was cozy, the decor outdated and the booths a little worse for wear.
âDo you recognize it?â
You turned around. Standing near a corner booth was Valkoâ the real-world Valko. He was dressed down in a sweater with the sleeves pushed up his forearms, looking impossibly handsome despite the casual clothing.
You blinked, looking around the exposed brick walls and checkered tablecloths. âOh my god,â you breathed, a bright smile breaking across your face. âItâs the tavern in the city center.â
Valko nodded, thoroughly pleased that you not only recognized it, but that it made you happy. The dinner passed in a blissful blur. Any lingering nervousness you had entirely dissolved in the first ten minutes. He was the same doting and slightly needy partner you had spent the better part of the past year falling for. He poured your drinks, pushed the bread basket closer to your side, and listened to everything you said with rapt attention, his eyes soft and full of unwavering fondness that made your cheeks flush.
As the night finally wrapped up, he offered to take you home. You guess you shouldnât have been surprised that he had a personal driver, but you were still flustered when Valko himself held the door open for you, sliding in beside you.
âSo, Mr. Chairman,â you hummed. âYou kept your identity a secret, hid a message in a global broadcast, and built a replica of one of your favorite restaurants in-game. Any other surprises up your sleeve?â
Valko hesitated, diverting his attention to the passing streetlights before looking back at you, so pretty in a way your avatar hadnât been able to capture. âMaybe one or two,â he chuckled. He redirected the conversation back to you, not quite ready to reveal the rest and wanting more than anything to arrange another date to get to know the you behind the avatar who taught him the mechanics of his own game and so jealously guarded her inventory.
When the car pulled up the curb in front of your apartment building, Valko reluctantly slid out of the seat, holding the door for you and offering his hand.
âThank you for tonight,â you said. âI had a great time.â
Valko nodded enthusiastically. âOf course. Would you, uh,â he faltered, red spreading across his cheekbones. âWould you want to do this again?â
You giggled, over the moon that he seemed every bit as enamored with you as you were with him. âIâd love that.â
He let out a relieved huff, the nervous tension visibly leaving his shoulders. You bid your goodbyes, but youâd hardly taken two steps before you stopped wrestling with your own cowardice, shoving it down as you whirled back around to plant a soft kiss on his cheek. With a final, whispered goodbye, you hurried into the building, leaving Valko to stand there with his fingers lightly grazing the skin your lips had been on just moments prior.
His heart fluttered like a trapped hummingbird, soaring high as he climbed back into the car. His mind kept wandering back to what it felt like to have you closeâfor real this time, not like when youâd cozy up next to him on the couch of his cabin.
He ran his hand through his hair, his cheeks beginning to hurt from how much he had been smiling. As he watched the scenery pass by, he wondered when and how he should tell you that the fluffy ears and tail he wore as HowlKo werenât just digital accessories.

"I'm entertaining... a friend," Valko said to someone over the phone.
Hoho, so I'm a friend? Is what you thought, feeling amused after overhearing the conversation.
Just weeks later, you found yourself entangled in Valko's strong, thick arms. You were sitting on a chair across the mirror, preparing yourself for work. Valko was sitting on the floor with his legs crossed, his head buried against your waist as he inhaled your fragrant scent.Â
After you brushed your hair and finished your final touches, you held his arm. "Valko, I should go now..."Â
His wolf ears perked as he nuzzled deeper into your waist. "Just a bit more," His tail wagged restlessly.Â
You stared at him for a while before you caressed his cheek softly. "Valko," you called out.
He raised his head and his eyes locked with yours with a soft gaze. His right eyebrow raised as if he were trying to read the thoughts behind your eyes.Â
"Um... we should refrain from doing these kinds of things so often."Â
As soon as he heard your statement, the restless swaying of his tail suddenly halted, falling flat to the floor. His eyes widened, and his golden eyes flickered with disbelief.Â
"Refrain...?" He repeated, ears twitching before drooping. "From what things?" he asked, a faint hint of tremor slipping in his voice as though unsure as to whether he had heard you correctly.
You nodded. "You know... all these hugging, sleeping together in one bed," you shyly said.Â
As if the world came crashing down on him, Valko sat frozen.Â
The color drained from his face.
"Did I do something wrong?" He asked, voice weary.
You quickly shook your head, hands still caressing his cheeks. "No, no! It's not like that. You did not do anything wrong."Â
Even though you reassured him, his shoulders remained tense, bracing himself for what you were going to say. You sighed heavily, searching for the right words.Â
"It's just that, when you think about it," you rubbed the back of your head. "... friends do not act this way, Valko."
Valko's brows knit together, trying to make sense of what you were saying.Â
"They don't cling to each other with every chance they get," you continued. "They don't fall asleep in the same bed almost every night... and they definitely don't kiss," you rubbed his head, trying to not hurt his feelings any further. "I am just worried that acting like this might cause unnecessary rumors, especially because many people's eyes are on you."Â
Silence settled between the two of you.
Valko's gaze fell to the ground, his ears drooped lower as the words echoed in his mind.Â
Friends don't act this way.Â
The sentence remained on his mind more than he wanted to.Â
Just as you were about to break the silence, your phone rang, reflecting Tara on the screen.Â
You gently released yourself from Valko's arms, pressing the answer button on your phone's screen. "Hello?"
["Where are you, gorgeous?"] Tara's voice came through the speaker. ["Don't tell me you're still at home. Meeting starts in a few minutes."]Â
"Oh, shitâ I totally forgot. I'll hurry." You ended the call, grabbed your bag, and slipped your phone inside.Â
You looked at Valko and patted his head softly. "We'll clear things up later, okay? You still have work, you should go too."
He looked at you with pained eyes, but he managed to force out a smile. "... Okay."
The moment you stepped inside your apartment, you let out a long sigh.
Today's conversation replayed in your mind for what felt like the hundredth time.
"...I really should explain it properly." You set your bag down at the table, slipping your hand inside to grab your phone. Worried, your thumb hovered over Valko's contact as several thoughts formed in your head.
What if you had hurt him? Maybe you worded it too harshly. Maybe he thought you were pushing him away.
Before you could call him, you heard a knock on your door.Â
You approached the door and stared at it for a few seconds, mustering your courage, feeling the familiar presence on the other side.Â
You clicked the door open and saw Valko standing unnaturally, with his hands behind him. "Hi, Valko."
"Hello..." His ears twitched, looking away.Â
"Um... about this morning, I am sorry." You scratched your head. "I don't want you to think that I am pushing you away," you explained.Â
You looked at him and saw his uneasy expression as he waited for you to continue.
"I like being with you, Valko. I like spending time with you," you straightforwardly spoke, blushing heavily as your heart thumped. "I- I just don't think... I just don't think it's appropriate to call it friends when weâ"Â
"I don't want to be friends anymore." The words burst out of him before you could finish.Â
His ears shot upright, and his tail wagged anxiously. For a moment, even he was surprised by his outburst.Â
"Sorry, I interrupted you." He looked at you, looked away, and looked back at you again. "I tried imagining it earlier."Â Â
"I tried thinking about not being able to hold your hand. I tried thinking, not being able to see you every day or hug you," he paused.Â
Your eyes softened at his words, and your hands lowered from holding the knob.Â
"I tried thinking of us being separated because we're just friends," he frowned. "But I don't want that." His eyes looked pained, and his huge body seemed to shrink, as if he were bullied.
"Valko..."
"I hated it. I want hugs, lots of them. I want to hug you."
He looked at you firmly, tail wagging softly as he expressed himself.Â
"I like spending time with you."Â
"I like it when you pinch my nose."Â
"I like it when you pat my head."Â
"I like holding you. I like it when you hold me too."Â
"... I love waiting for you to come home."Â
You could not mutter anything and could only swallow. Your heart rang in your ears, muffling all the rustling sounds in your surroundings, and you could only hear his voice.
"If friends can't do that..." he inhaled deeply, pursing his lips. He squeezed his eyes shut for a second. "May I ask you on a date?!"Â
His eyes slowly opened, studying your face for a second.Â
"Oops. Didn't mean to shout." He covered his tomato-colored face, feeling embarrassed, his ears folding slightly.Â
You could not help but smile at his silliness and ended up approaching him. How could you even resist a big baby who yearns only for you?
Before you could reach him, his eyes widened. He just remembered something important.
"Ahâ!" A flower bouquet appeared in front of you. The ribbon was tied a little crookedly, and several petals were slightly out of place. "Here. For you."Â
You chuckled softly, noticing how the bouquet was slightly worn out, with some wolf hair stuck on it.Â
"Thank you, Valko. I appreciate it." You took the bouquet from his hand. "And yes, let's go on plenty of dates, shall we?"Â
You could have sworn you saw his gold eyes light up instantly, and his mouth opened slightly, as if bewildered by your words.
"OhâI know a place." He turned around and placed one arm crossed over his chest while the other rested on it, his fist tucked beneath his chin in thought.Â
You listened to him babble some words and ended up giggling upon seeing his tail waggling in excitement.Â
"Um, Valko, there are some petals stuck on your tail."

Despite warning Zayne that you and Sylus were dropping by, he was still sluggish to answer the door. You suspected it was because he'd said not to come over. Heâd only agreed when the two of you promised to only stay long enough to drop off some things you thought might help. However, neither of you left after seeing Zayne's condition.
The cardiac surgeon was nearly covered in ice. Icy blue fragments peaking out from the collar of his long sleeved shirt. This was different from when he lost control over his evol. Very different. It didn't look cutting or painful. Just a deep-seated, bone-chilling cold.
"When did it get this bad?" You asked and paced once again. Sylus couldn't help but think back to that night in his room, when you first stressed about Zayne's health. "Why didn't you tell us it got this bad?!"
"I knew you'd come." Zayne answered honestly. "There is no cure. I may have some time left, but you two don't need to be here for it."
"There is nowhere else we'd rather be." Sylus said. He remained standing, not feeling like he could sit right now. Zayne being the only one that was, though Sylus figured it was because he didn't have the strength to stand. If the cold bowl of soup on the coffee table indicated anything.
"No cure?!" Having stopped pacing at his words, frozen with fear, you turned to face him. "No, no there has to be a cure. You can't die, Zayne, you can't."
Zayne remained silent, looking down at his clasped hands in his lap. There was nothing that he could say. It was inevitable.
"We aren't going to let you die." Half kneeling on the couch next to him, you threw your arms around Zayne's neck. You didn't care about the awkward angle, you didn't care how cold he felt, that cold was seeping into you, the only thing that mattered in that moment was holding him.
Sylus wasn't far behind you as he sat on the opposite side of Zayne. A throw blanket you'd planned to just drop off elevated by his evol, settling it down around all of you once he had also hugged Zayne. "We'll find a way to cure you, Zayne."
"Stop." Zayne said, trying to weakly push you both away. "I don't want either of you to get cold from me."
"We don't mind." Sylus said, not affected by Zayne's efforts at all. "We'll let go if you tell us you don't want us to hug you though."
Zayne felt you holding him tighter. He didn't know if it was because of his attempts to push you off of him or the thought that he might seriously tell you to let go of him.
"Don't let go."
"We aren't going anywhere."
"We're right here, Zayne." Sylus pressed a kiss to Zayne's temple before resting his forehead there. "We won't just let you die."
Where Sylus had kissed him to everywhere they touched, warmth bloomed. Zayne wanted to lean into it, ask for more. He couldn't do it. He couldn't bring himself to say that the cure is them, their love.
Uncomfortable from kneeling on the couch, you repositioned yourself so you're sitting on the couch legs thrown over Zayne and Sylus'. Still, Zayne didn't complain, simply adjusted with you. Sylus as well, holding your ankles on his lap as he leaned back so only one arm is wrapped around Zayne.
As you had gotten comfortable, you kissed Zayne's cheek before laying your head on his shoulder. Again, Zayne felt warm from the contact. So much more than when you were simply holding him.
"Again." He rasped out, wanting - needing - to feel the heat of you and Sylus' lips on his skin.
"Do what again?" You asked curiously since you had been the one to move the most.
"Kiss me again. Your kisses are warm."
You wasted no time pressing your lips to his skin again. This time his jaw as it was easier to reach. Zayne humming in relief, he almost couldn't remember the last time he felt warmth like that.
Sylus was more hesitant to kiss the doctor again. It's clear your kisses have an effect on Zayne. But did his as well? He is well aware of Zayne's words, they had included his kiss. And yetâŠ
And yet Zayne still looked over at Sylus expectantly. The slightly younger man wants another kiss from him. Sylus certainly wasn't about to say no. "Look at me, Zayne. Do you want it?" Do you want me? Do you want us both?
"Yes." More than you know. More than I could put into words. More than I could ever allow myself to want.
Shifting only slightly, Sylus leaned in and kissed Zayne's lips, an action that Zayne didn't hesitate to return. Their lips sliding together with ease.
The kiss is so soft, delicate, and warm. Soft and delicate in a way that the doctor didn't know the Onyichous leader could be. Warm in a way that heats you from the inside out. Warm in a way that staved off the bone chilling cold he had been feeling.
"My turn." You said, moving away from kissing Zayne's neck and shoulder. "I want to kiss, Zaynie too."
"You can both kiss me as much as you want." Zayne said as he turned to face you. "But you'll have to kiss each other too."
"Kitten and I kiss all the time, let us focus on you for now."
"Sylus is right, now let me kiss you."
Zayne never thought he'd hear you beg to kiss him. "Then come here and kiss me."
Taking that as a challenge, you wrapped your arms around his neck and tugged him closer to you. Smashing your lips against his, in a much rougher start to a kiss than Sylus', how he had expected the other man to kiss him. However, you eventually got into a much softer rhythm.
The warmth he felt from kissing Sylus settled and stayed as you and Zayne kissed. A feeling of finally being warm and comfortable washed over him. The feeling of your lips on his, and Sylus' lips on his skin makes him feel like he's finally home. A relief greater than when he walked through the doors of his house after a long shift at the hospital.
Zayne, not wanting to leave either of you unkissed for too long, switched between you and Sylus. Each kiss, no matter if it was to his lips, or skin, felt like the sun on a nice summer's day.
Eventually though, the doctor realized something. It's too hot.
Much too hot to be sandwiched between his two new lovers with a thick blanket wrapped around them and the heat on. It wasn't exactly the middle of winter, but it certainly was too hot to have the heat on. Honestly, he wondered how his partners hadn't complained about the heat yet. He almost missed being cold. Almost.
"Don't you think it's a bit too warm under with the blanket?"
"Did you just ask if it's warm?" You asked, pulling away to look at the dark-haired male properly. "All the ice is gone!" You exclaimed, unintentionally feeling him up to make sure all the ice is gone.
Zayne just let you, not minding in the slightest. While he had known that the love and affection he received from you and Sylus was the best medicine he could ask for, he hadn't realized just how well it worked. The doctor wanted to enjoy the affection in the moment and not think about the mysteries illness.
"I think that's enough, Sweetie," Sylus chuckled.
"Sorry," You said sheepishly, "I only meant to see if all the ice is really gone."
"That's alright. I don't mind so long as it's you two."
"Are you better now? Or is it going to come back again?" You asked.
"I'm not sure." Zayne answered honestly. "Unfortunately, I have no way of knowing unless it starts happening again."
"What was it exactly that caused the ice to melt?" Sylus asked. He had spent many nights trying to figure it out along with his own team of trusted doctors.
"My best guess is your affections."
"Our love for you healed you?" You asked, raising your eyebrows at the almost unbelievable statement.
"That is my best guess, yes."
"How long have you known this?" Sylus asked, knowing that Zayne had been holding something back for a while.
"I've had my suspicions. Every time we spoke, especially when either of you said something that boarded on flirting and meant it, I felt a warmth. But nothing like the physical affections. The signs that you⊠care me."
"Our love for you, healed you?" Sylus questioned wanting to make sure he understood what Zayne was saying.
"It seems to be, yes."
"Are you cured now?" You asked cautiously, scared of what the answer might be.
"I likely wonât know for sure until youâve both left for the evening."
"Will you call us right away if it does?" Seeing Zayne's eyes slide away from yours, you continue, "Sylus and I love you, Zayne. If we can help you feel warm, if we can help save you. We aren't going to hesitate to do so."
"If we go under the assumption that it does come back, neither of you could stay by my side twenty-four seven. I have long surgeries and appointments I can't be accompanied on."
"No, but I do have a somewhat flexible schedule. If it comes back, you can call me whenever you want, Frosty, I'll answer it or call you back quickly."
"And if Sy isn't around, I will be. We'll work it out, Zaynie."
"We aren't going to let you die so easily."
The cardiac surgeon looked down at your legs over his lap, Sylus' hand resting of them, the feeling of his other around his shoulders. Zayne knew that he would never feel cold again with the two of you. "I suppose that knowing you both are willing to help keep me from freezing is sufficient."
"Good," You said happily, leaning in for another kiss to his cheek, smile almost too bright. "Now all you need to do is agree to be our boyfriend. Right, Sy? He should agree to be ours."
Sylus chuckled, "We'd be yours too, sharing each other equally."
"I would very much like that," Zayne smiled. "Having you both as mine sounds warm."
You and Sylus both laughed as you leaned in to kiss both of your boyfriends before watching them share a kiss as well.
Later, Zayne would learn that that day cured him. He never froze like that again. However, whenever he claimed it was cold, his spouses would come running, showering him in love and affection. Eventually, the term "I'm cold" became code for wanting affection. And none of you would have it any other way.

summary: Where you and Zayne get your story straight, and maybe get a little closer?

series masterlist
The nerves hadnât faded.
Youâd thought they might once you texted Zayne back. Then when youâd woken up the next morning. And again as youâd packed for the trip that evening, folding each outfit and then refolding them. Maybe even when youâd taken a cab to the train station, watching the city flit past and wondering if you still had time to cancel.
But no, youâd been painfully nervous every step of the way.
Even now, standing on the crowded platform surrounded by the low rumble of idle chatter and rolling luggage, you feel almost nauseous. Zayne wouldnât stand you up. You know that, of course. If something truly came up, some kind of emergency at the hospital, a last-minute consultation, he would absolutely find a way to let you know. Thatâs just how Zayne was. He always told you the truth.
You wish you could do the same.
âHello.â He appears almost out of thin air, standing next to you with a medium black suitcase in tow. Itâs sleek and expensive-looking, the kind of luggage thatâs clearly never been roughly handled by airport baggage crews. You almost cringe at how your dinged-up pink suitcase must look in comparison, its scratches and faded stickers a sign of every underfunded adventure. If Zayne notices, he doesnât comment. Instead, he hands you a slip of thick paper, his fingers brushing yours for just a moment longer than necessary.
âOur train tickets.â He explains, an almost imperceptible smirk on his face when you glance at him confused. Of course, your confusion is not about what the paper is, but rather why he has them. Both of them. Your name printed neatly beside his.
âYou didnât need to buy mine too. Iâd be happy to pay you back for it.â You reach for your wallet, your action halted by cool fingers encircling your wrist. Instantly, blood rushes through your ears, loud as a wave. Sure, Zayne has touched you before. A hand on your shoulder after a difficult appointment, a brief steadying grip when youâd tripped leaving his office. But itâs always been a very professional sort of touch. Never straying too far from the confines of your very odd friend/doctor-patient relationship.
But something about this feels different.
His thumb rests against your pulse point, and you know, you know, he can feel how fast your heart is beating.
âThereâs no need.â His voice is quieter now, meant only for you. âIsnât this my duty as your boyfriend?â
If thereâs a heaven, it better be exactly like this.
âYou-you donât need to start that right now.â The words tumble out too fast. âWe only really have to pretend in front of my colleagues. And they wonât be around all the time so for most of the trip we can just be our regular selves!â You smile in what you can only hope is a reassuring manner, though it feels more like a grimace.
For some reason, your words have little effect on Zayne. His expression doesnât shift, but something in his eyes dims, just slightly, just for a fraction of a second. You thought heâd be relieved at not having to pretend to be your boyfriend the whole time. Could it be that he wasâŠ
Disappointed?
Nah. No way.
You almost laugh out loud at the thought, the sound catching in your throat. What could be more ridiculous than that? Zayne hasnât ever given even a hint as to returning your feelings. Not once in all the time youâve known him. Youâd nearly given up on the idea altogether, had started mentally composing the speech youâd give yourself about how some crushes were just meant to go unrequited. Maybe this trip would finally be the nail in the coffin for you to well and truly let go.
The train arrives soon enough. Zayne picks up your suitcase with ease, one hand wrapped around the handle of his own, the other lifting yours like it weighs nothing, very pointedly ignoring your protests. You follow behind him as he navigates to your seats, his shoulder blades shifting beneath his coat with each step. He lets you choose where you want to sit with a small gesture of his hand, and you settle by the window, immediately pulling out your phone to distract yourself.
âOkay, so we should get to the resort in time for dinner which means my friends will definitely want to meet you. So we have to get our story straight.â The serious tone in your voice makes Zayne raise a brow almost immediately.
âOur story?â He settles into the seat beside you, close enough that his knee almost touches yours. âWouldnât it be easier to simply say I asked you out?â
âAnd how exactly did you do that?â
âSimple.â He leans back slightly, considering. âWe ran into each other at the bakery near the hospital that we both frequent. I asked you if you were free for dinner. You said yes. We went on a few dates, and I asked you to be my girlfriend.â
For a moment, no one speaks.
His ears begin to grow red. The tips first, then the whole curve, a slow bloom of color youâve never witnessed before. He glances away from your shocked face, focusing instead on the back of the seat in front of him, though thereâs nothing to see. Youâve never seen Zayne flustered. Composed Dr. Zayne, who could deliver difficult diagnoses without a tremor in his voice. And you canât believe youâre seeing it under these circumstances.
âIâŠokay. Sure.â Your own voice sounds distant. âWe-we can tell them that.â
As if to also hide from the awkwardness, you turn to look out the window, admiring the view as the train begins to move, pretending it doesnât pale in comparison to the man sitting next to you.
Apparently, you fall asleep at some point. The gentle rocking of the train and the low murmur of other passengers must lull you under. You wake to Zayneâs hand on your shoulder, gently shaking you, his thumb pressing lightly into the fabric of your top.
âAre we there yet?â You mumble, rubbing your eyes as you sit up. When they finally focus, you realize that it wasnât the window youâd fallen asleep against. It was Zayneâs shoulder. Thereâs probably a crease mark on your cheek. You resist the urge to hide your face from his view.
âNot yet.â He doesnât mention it. âWe still have a few hours left, but I assumed you would be hungry. I packed sandwiches.â
He holds out a carefully wrapped sandwich, which you take slowly, still burning with embarrassment. Zayne doesnât seem to mind though, unwrapping his own and eating without saying a word, his focus fixed somewhere on the passing landscape.
You take a bite, only to immediately pull back in surprise.
Itâs perfect. Exactly the way you like it, the bread lightly toasted, the turkey sliced thin, exactly the right amount of mustard, even the particular brand of cheese you always buy. How the hell did he know how you like your sandwiches?
âThe first time we had lunch together, you were very specific with your order.â Zayne says, almost too casual for such an oddly intimate thing. He doesnât look at you when he says it, his gaze still on the window. âIt was easy to remember.â
But you remember that lunch too. You remember the way heâd listened, nodding along as you explained, in probably too much detail, exactly why cold sandwiches were superior to grilled ones. You hadnât thought he was paying that close attention. But heâs always had a good memory, so you donât comment on it.
The two of you eat in silence, save for your mumbled thanks when he hands you a bottle of water, and then a napkin, and then, with the most serious expression youâve ever seen on him, a small bottle of pear-scented hand sanitizer.
âDo you have a bag like Mary Poppins that Iâm not seeing?â You joke with a teasing grin as you rub the sanitizer into your skin, the sweet fragrance blooming between you.
âItâs good to be prepared.â Is all Zayne has to add. Of course. He was always prepared for everything. Including, apparently, pretending to be dating you.
When the train finally pulls into the station, the announcement crackling overhead, you once again follow behind Zayne as he leads the way off. The mountain air hits you first, cool and crisp, so different from the city. You take a moment to admire him as he scans the crowd, his broad shoulders and toned physique silhouetted against the golden hour light. Perhaps itâs wrong to be so excited for such a thing, but youâre really looking forward to seeing him by the pool. You allow yourself exactly three seconds to imagine it before firmly shutting that thought away.
âDo you see your colleagues anywhere?â He helps you off the last step, standing just close enough that anyone nearby would easily mistake you for a couple. Which, for the week, you technically are.
âHey! Over here!â Taraâs voice is loud and clear, cutting through the station noise. Sheâs waving at you with both hands, a wide smile on her face, flanked by a small group of familiar faces. Zayneâs hand slips into yours so naturally that you donât even question it, his fingers interlacing with yours like theyâve done it a hundred times before. It feels nice, to hold his hand and feel the warmth of his body so close to yours, even as you walk toward your friends and the performance youâve signed up for.
âThis must be Zayne!â Tara is grinning, her eyes doing that knowing thing they always do. She clearly recognizes the man youâve spent many drunken karaoke nights gushing over, whose photo you may have accidentally-on-purpose shown her once. To his credit, Zayne doesnât let his surprise show. He uses his free hand to shake hands around the circle while not letting go of you, his grip warm and steady.
âItâs nice to meet you all.â He says it like he means it, and maybe he does. They exchange pleasantries and small talk about the trip, how were the trains, did you bring swimsuits, isnât the resort supposed to be amazing. The nerves have started to creep back in now, curling low in your stomach. Itâs not like anything bad would happen if you got caught, itâs not a crime to be single, but now it was real. The lie had left the station. And it would be truly humiliating to be found out. I mean, how pathetic. You had to have a friend pretend to be your boyfriend just for a free vacation? Youâd never hear the end of it. Tara would never let you live it down.
âYou guys must be starving!â Tara suggests, already turning toward the exit. âShould we go get dinner now?â
You glance to Zayne. Heâs already looking at you, waiting. When he nods in agreement, you do the same, squeezing his hand without thinking. After all, you were prepared for this. You had a story. You had a fake boyfriend who remembered how you take your sandwich.
Actionable Ideas for Challenging Infold Over Valko's Release (Updated!)
A lot of LADS fans are really upset over Infold's decision to shelve Valko. This is my attempt at creating action items for fans wanting to do something but are unsure where to start.
Here are some methods for giving Infold feedback:

Reply to their posts on X (Twitter)
Comment on their Instagram posts and unfollow them
Comment on their Facebook posts and unfollow them
Comment on their YouTube videos and unfollow them
Comment on their XHS/RedNote posts and unfollow them
Join their official Discord Server and voice your dissatisfaction
Leave a 1-star review on the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store
Complete the survey in the Love and Deepspace app by selecting the box/pencil icon in the top right corner of the home screen
"Suggest" Valko's release in the Love and Deepspace app by going to Settings > More > Support, then select "Suggestion"
(If you want to be slightly passive-aggressive) On 9 July, go to Settings > More > Support, then select "Bug Report" and fill out the report stating that the promised Valko content is missing
Uninstall the LADS app after sending feedback, unless you want to continue using Support as another place to give repeated feedback
Remember: if we want Infold to listen to us, we MUST remain persistent, civil, and demonstrate our affection for the game. I highly doubt they will be intimidated by non-CN players, which means we are held to a different standard. What is effective for them will not be effective for us.
With that said, remember these do's and dont's:
Do vary your written feedback. Making each piece of feedback you give at least slightly different, particularly in emails, will ensure your thoughts are not filtered out.
Do repeatedly submit/post/send your feedback over the next few weeks. Email them today, in a few days, on 9 July, and in the weeks after. Post on their social media every day. Overwhelm them and show them this isn't going to go away over a few free Wishes.
Do prepare to CONTINUE submitting/posting/sending your feedback over the next few months. Infold needs to see that we won't let this issue go. Schedule emails to be sent to them over the next 3 months. Draft X posts today and copy and paste them to post in a few months time. Draft your long-form in-app feedback in preperation for the update and the upcoming banners. Create reminders to check and comment on their posts weekly. Don't let them get comfortable. Be a dog with a bone (lol).
Do maintain a polite tone in your feedback (even when you are issuing a threat like leaving the game).
Do specify your current disappointments, long-term criticisms, and expectations for the future of the game should you continue to play. For example, don't just say you want more Main Story updates; specify that you want them every three months.
Do clearly isolate your long-term issues with the game from the current issue of Valko's release. Make it clear that those issues are not resolved by delaying or permanently canceling Valko's debut.
Do talk positively about whatever you can (ie. enjoying other LIs, enjoying the content of the Main Story itself, appreciating the worldbuilding, etc). This may feel difficult, but it demonstrates that you are a passionate player. Infold can assume that a player so invested in the game would need something drastic to push them to leave.
Don't use profanity.
Don't reference CN players.
Don't bring up Infold's past mistakes. We need to stay focused on the current issues.
Don't criticize anything about Valko's teased content. This one may be unpopular, I know. If Infold is pulling back Valko's release, I don't think it's likely that they will be willing to invest any more time and money into his development. If they continue to get more and more criticisms about him and don't care to change anything about him, they will never release him. I'm not minimizing any fan's concerns; I'm suggesting we choose a priority.
If you are unsure where to start, here are some talking points:
Express your excitement over Valko (bonus points if you give reasons why). Did you come back from a long hiatus for him?
Express your disappointment over not having Valko in the game. How will it impact your enjoyment of the game?
Describe how you prepared for his anticipated arrival.
âą In-game (farm for dias, bought packs, etc)
âą On your devices (created storage space, bought a new device, etc)
âą Financially (budgeted for buying packs upon his release, etc)
Describe how you engaged in fandom around Valko. Did you create fanart, fanfiction, or other fanworks? How much were you consuming fanworks showcasing him? Demonstrating how beloved he was before any real content of his being released indicates a warm reception if/when he is released.
What are the current issues you experience with the game? Be specific. Describe exactly how they impact your gameplay. Suggest a concrete way those issues could be resolved. Assert that Valko's release being postponed or canceled will not resolve these issues.
Express concern for the changes to their planned story arc his absence would create. Question if those changes would be as enjoyable as their original plan.
(If you're feeling up to it) Acknowledge the amount of time, effort, and money that must have gone into creating Valko. Let them know it would disappoint you to see it go to waste.
Infold made a terrible decision. We need to take action and let Infold know that a large portion of the LADS fanbase wants Valko to be released at some point. Let's try to remain positive where we can, engage in positive fandom, and do our best to make our voices heard by Infold.
Thanks to @shivasdarknight, @adehsroyal, and @alyxzenia for their contributions!

He stops writing on your chart at the words. Zayne knows you well enough to know that this conversation isn't for Dr. Zayne, so he sets aside the clipboard and gives you his full attention.
"See...the Association offers an all-included week long vacation for all it's employees and their p-partners." You shoot him a pointed look, to which he nods. His eyes dart back to his papers, scanning them.
"I see. And because of your condition, you need a note from me. I'd be happy to provide one for you. I...didn't know you were seeing anyone."
"W-well that's the thing. I'm not. But I'm sure you might...have some spare vacation days."
A long moment goes by. Long enough that your throat goes dry and your heart starts to hammer in your chest. Oh god, this was a stupid idea. Maybe if you pray hard enough, a wanderer will spawn and kill you now, just to free you from the awkwardness.
"Are you suggesting we go together? Isn't being romantically involved a prerequisite?" His fingers interlock, resting on the desk as he stares at you. But he hasn't said no yet, so you press on.
"We could just pretend! It's not like we have to do anything. And I figured you might enjoy some time off! You work more than I do." You smile in what you hope to be a collected manner, but probably comes off more insane.
"I'll check my schedule. Is that all?"
You try not to openly deflate. Of course he wouldn't want to come. Why would he want to spend a week pretending to be your boyfriend for a vacation he could take whenever he wanted?
You're still moping later that evening, scrolling absentmindedly on your phone to take your mind off your humiliation when it buzzes with a text.
Zayne: I have a week's worth of vacation to take at any time. When do we leave?

POV: You are the non-MC wife. You thought the marriage would save you, but the moment you crossed his precious MC, you became nothing more than a target. He didn't even hesitate.
God, the angst of being the disposable villain in someone else's love story is unmatched đ
Sylus had made it quite obvious that you two were friends⊠just friends.
Clearly the flirtation was platonic, the late night calls with husky whispers and soft laughs were casual. Oh, and the gifts? Of course the custom made jewelry was a besties thing. Him buying you your dream motorcycle? Friendly!
You and Sylus were friends. Best friends, even!
He had drilled that into your head more times than you could count. At auctions he was always thanked for his donations, donations he signed with âMr. Sylus and his friendâ as the host would read aloud.
Or perhaps the museum? When he donated a wanderer crystal and signed that off as âMr. Sylus and his friendâ yet again. Oh, and donât forget the time he introduced himself as âSkyeâ to your colleagues, proclaiming you two were besties.
Besties. Nothing more, nothing less.
You were fine with that, honestly. You only stared at yourself late at night for maybe a month or two. Post auction, post meet up, wondering why he couldnât see you as anything more. Maybe you just werenât his type.
Five months in to being the leader of Onychinusâ âfriendâ you buried your feelings and tried to put yourself out there.
It wasnât long before you scored a date, feeling like an excited high schooler who just got asked out by her hallway crush. He was handsome, funny, easy to talk to.
Your date was set for the coming weekend, but you had a pre-planned visit to the N109 Zone the day before.
Maybe now youâd be able to look at Sylus with a little less heartache. Yâknow⊠since friends arenât supposed to feel that way about each otherâŠ
âYou look happy, kitten.â Sylusâ stopped chopping, eyes lingering on your blissful smile as you entered the kitchen. Luke and Kieran chirped their hellos while you placed your jacket on the back of one of the chairs.
âI am! Itâs finally the weekend and I have some pretty exciting plans.â You plop yourself down, the chatter of the twins behind you creating a comforting atmosphere as Sylus began chopping vegetables again.
âExciting plans? Do indulge.â He was humming softly as he worked, crimson eyes focused. âWell, youâre not gonna believe it, Sy. But Iâm going on a date tomorrow! Heâs this really nice guy I met after one of myââ but you trail off when his head snaps up and the twins go silent.
ââŠa date?â Youâd never seen Sylus look so pale.
âWith a man?â Luke adds, as if itâs completely impossible. And as much as you want to whirl around and berate him for the implications, you canât stop staring at Sylus.
âYeah⊠a dateâŠâ your words come out slow, hesitant. As if youâre missing something massive and are waiting for him to speak up. Though, maybe youâre just being ridiculous. Maybe youâre just hanging on to a shred of hope because you swear his gaze is saying âwhat about me?â
âIs that alright with you, bestie?â Maybe youâre a little bitter, but you canât help but throw that little dig in.
It takes Sylus a long moment to speak, his eyes staring as if he can see through to your very soul. His knife still frozen mid-chop. And, somewhere along the way, the twins found off handed excuses to exit the premises.
âNo, actually. Itâs not.â
You canât hold back your laugh, more disbelieving than humorous. âWhat do you mean?â Again, he's silent, as if physically churning the words in his mind and pushing them to the front.
"Don't tell me you're going to be the type of friend that has to approve of who I date. Don't you think that's a little much?"
Now? He looked like he was about to be sick.
"Kitten, you must be joking." His recovery wasn't as smooth as usual, and, all jokes aside, you were starting to realize this horror-struck reaction of his was actually dead serious.
"Sylus... why would I be joking?" He looks like he's struggling to swallow, licking his lips to wet them before he choked on his own inability to speak. "Have I been imagining our connection?" it's pointed, a little hurt, a little offended. And suddenly, you're the one look at him like you're about to be physically ill all over the counter.
"I.. you... Sylus. You have been calling me your friend, your bestie, for months at this point. Your friend." A beat of silence passes, then two, then three before you manage "I finally decided to move on because I was pretty damn certain you didn't see me as anything but."
Moved on.
The knife clatters on the cutting board, the look on his face has your heart aching in a way you've never felt before. He looked like a kicked puppy, vulnerable and unsure of what he did to deserve this. Though, seeing it from your perspective, he sort of understood...
"You... you've moved on from me?" it sounds as if he had to chew on glass to get those words out, as if they physically pained him.
"No." It spills out before you can stop it. "I was trying to, I've been trying to. I was hoping this date would be the push I needed to finally take that step but..." You wanted to cry and scream, hit him too.
"...I can't move on from something that hasn't even had the chance to really start and... fuck, Sylus. I really thought you didn't feel the same." He had only used that stupid label to make you feel comfortable, he foolishly hadn't realized it had been driving you away. Even worse, making you believe he didn't desire you.
"Don't go on that date, please." A hint of desperation swirls through his tone, because he still finds himself choking up when it comes to saying how he feels. But, it's a step in the right direction.
"Why not?" You circle back, because you've waited to damn long to hear these words. You're not willing to let him back out now.
"Because I adore you, Kitten. And I'm so sorry for making it seem like it was anything less than pure love." Love? Oh. Oh.
A brain warmup before I dive back into the bane of my existence: The rest of my Kinktober prompts⊠This was a silly brain worm and genuinely a warm up so I apologize if there are errors or weird jumps.
The sound of broken glass was loud inside the quiet mansion. Your eyes widened in shock. That vase must've cost a fortune, and it's filled with Emcee's flowers gifted for SylusâŠ
Oh, no.Â
No, no, no. Youâre going to be done for. The last time someone offended Miss Hunter, they got their karma. You canât put your job on the line for this.
You shivered, panicking internally. What to do, what to doâŠ
In the midst of your inner screaming, you failed to notice the series of caws going away, Mephisto had watched. Great, the sound of the crash mustâve echoed down the hallâyou hoped Mephisto was sent to watch over Emcee, but he just had to be spying on you.
You crouched down, wincing when something stings on your feet.Â
Ah, some of the shards prickled your feet. Tiny scratches emit blood from itâbut you needed to save the flowers, you knew how much Emcee's gifts are worth to Sylus. It would probably cost your whole life.
"Stop.â
It took one single word and tone to make you flinch. The command boomed down the hallway, black mists reached too late when you had touched a shard, gripped hard when you got startled. You stiffened, avoiding looking at him.Â
Heart hammering, cold sweat dampens your back. There was no way to hide this mess, huh?
Crunch of glass underneath their boots. You were only wearing slippers.
Luke and Kieran came in tow, navigating around you to clean up the mess while Sylus lifted you in his arms. He frowned at the blood on your feet, tiny glass shards still prickling in.
"Why are you hiding your face?" he asked, with a slight frown. Staring down at you while he made his way to his bedroom, were you that scared of him?Â
"I haven't even bitten you,â he murmured, arms tightening around you.
"I'm sorry I broke your vase that has Emcee's flowers in it." You blurted out immediately, feeling sick in your stomach. "Please don't cast me outâor kill me, you can take my paycheck for the vase."
Sylus hasn't heard something so absurd in his life. He scoffs in disbelief. Whatever you were even talking about?
He set you down on the bathroom counter, then grabbed some medical supplies. The silence he's giving off now is scaring you much more. Your palms were clammy by now, gripping your own shirt.
He had gently taken your hand, the one that pricked the shard. He tsk-ed at the blood staining your shirt, he shouldâve tended to your hand immediately.
"You could tell me why you didn't immediately ask for help and explain why you touched the shards yourself instead." He hummed, kneeling to peel off the shards from your feet with tweezers.
"I was trying to save the flowers... I know how much you value her gifts," you muttered, holding your hands together to hold off the pain. One shard had pricked too deeply, you cried in pain.
A soothing rub of comfort was on your knee, while his black mist assisted his other hand.
"To the point I would sacrifice you to go through broken glass?â He raised a brow, sighing. Before you could splutter a response, he sighed.
âNo, dove,â he muttered, shaking his head. âI must change your mind if you think I would sacrifice you."
Not his worker, not his assistant, but you. Specifically, you.
He gestured for you to turn your feet toward the sink, gently washing the blood off before disinfecting them.
"But it's from her..."
"Do you think I choose her more than you?"
"I-Isn't that obvious? Her, of course."
His movements stop at your words. His eyes glanced at your teary ones, in pain from the alcohol he was dabbing onâor was it from fear?Â
Wrapping it with some bandages, he made sure it was secure while he checked for any more injuries.
"You once had Luke and Kieran chase the man for the brooch that was meant for her." His head snapped up, inhaling deeply. Right, you were there when he went to grab it at an auction. He barked the orders as soon as the brooch was snatched from the auction listings.
"And the dress was the wrong size, you got mad." You timidly reasoned, fingers fiddling with each other. âI immediately sent it back for a new sizeâyou should check it when you can, it arrived today.â
Sylus furrowed his brows. Did he come off as mad? Surely he only said it was the wrong size, but you handled the problem perfectly as alwaysâhe didnât mean to reprimand you. It was to remind himself to double-check the size.
âAlso, the necklace that wasnât ready before her birthdayâŠâ
"It seems you're misunderstanding things, dove." He cuts you off, unable to hear anymore. He felt like a fool for not knowing how you felt all this time.
You frowned, holding onto him when he lifted you. Shifting uncomfortably, you remind yourself he was only being considerate of your injured feetâwould he lift you on normal occasions?
You expected him to move you back to your room, which was just across his, only to place you on his bed. Eyes widened, you squirmed, panicking. "W-Wait, what are you doingâ"
"Stay still." He grunts, fixing the pillows behind you for you to sit comfortably. "Tell me if you need anything, or ask Luke or Kieran."
"And we're going to talk. Right here, right now," he said, pulling a chair to sit by the bed.
You gulped, intimidated. Was he going to fire you after this? Will this be your end?Â
Your waterworks were already streaming, which surprised him. Yet he only chuckled, wiping them away now. His hand lingered, cradling your face, just like he always does whenever he sees you asleep.
âWhatever youâre thinking is not true,â he murmured, grazing your cheek with his thumb. He felt like a fool for letting you think otherwise.
"Everything you just mentioned was all for you."
You choked on your own saliva. Sylus already had a glass of water in his hand and handed it to you. "Your paycheck wouldn't be able to afford the vase, it'll be three years' worth of your paycheck."
"I'm so sorry..." you meekly said, holding the glass of water like a wrongdoer. You hadnât processed the words he said.
Everything was for you.
It took you a while to boot before gasping. âWhat do you mean it was for me?â
âI always had wanted to reward you with something for your hard work⊠an outfit with matching accessories, a dinner for you with me.â He had planned it. A surprise, he didnât expect you would think it was for Miss Hunter.
The look on your face was amusing. He laughed at your disbelief expression. He decided to add the attack. "Yes, it's you whom I value more if you haven't got the hint."
Sylus laughed, glad to see your tears stop. "And your apology will be accepted if you agree to go with me to make a new vase and tell me your favorite flowers."
"Make? My favorites?"
"Yes, make. I will put your flowers in it."
"...I swear you're playing too hard, boss." You squint, looking at him. Fingers fiddled, you frowned.
âYou⊠Youâre not joking, right?â
âWhen have I joked about my intentions with you, dove?â
âRightâŠâ you muttered. It wasnât like he ever played around.Â
The hand on your cheek was warm, his thumb kept rubbing comfortablyâgosh, you would have your face in his hands at any time.Â
âDinner this weekend night?â he murmured, casually throwing in the invite. He raised a brow at the lack of answer, laughing when he realized you were in daze.
He thinks itâs a yes from your dopey smile.
in which i try to make less than 1k words for sylus but fail. the whole point of this is i just want someone to speak softly to me
You're dripping water on the carpet of Zayne's office. He pauses by the coffee machine, where he'd been making you a cup of tea to fight off the almost definite cold you caught when you'd run over to Akso hospital in the pouring rain.
"What?" He's never looked quite so shocked, eyes wide with surprise as if the idea was so inconceivable. Funny, you thought it was obvious.
"I was going to wait to tell you. I-I figured maybe going on a date first would be better but then I was at work and I thought about it and I just couldn't believe that I was going to go even a second longer without ever telling you how hopelessly in love I am with you because-"
He's in front of you before you realize, his cool hands cupping your face. But before you can even process it, he's kissing you.
You've probably dreamed about kissing Zayne a hundred times. Still, nothing even comes close to the real thing.
It's hard to pull away, but when your lungs start to burn, you break contact just enough to take in some air. Neither of you move, lips still just a few centimeters apart.
"I thought that you..."
"I haven't shown it well, I know. I didn't want to burden you. In case you didn't feel the same." He murmurs, thumb brushing your cheek as if he can't quite believe it either.
"Say it?" You don't have to explain, or beg. Zayne hums, and after stealing another soft kiss, says the words you've waited years to hear.
I am putting in a official request for your presence. Going into effect⊠Immediately.
No, this is not optional. No, you cannot finish that one thing first.
I am facing a situation of great artistic importance and, tragically, I cannot resolve it alone.
Thomas has been hovering. Entirely immune to my attempts at subtle dismissal. He insists I should be focusing, meeting deadlines, and⊠this is my personal favorite⊠not getting distracted.
âŠYou see the problem, riiight?
I need a distraction. A very specific (and cute) one. You.
Before you say anything, yeah, I know youâve been busy.
Work has been demanding. Youâve been pushing yourself harder than you should.
I can hear it in your voice⊠even when you try to pretend everything is fine. Which is exactly why this is now an official request.
No, an assignment. Important Miss Bodyguard Work.
Your duties are as follows:
Sit somewhere within my line of sight.
Keep me company while I paint.
Ensure Thomas does not successfully drag me into anything tedious.
Occasionally remind me to take breaks⊠even though Iâll ignore you the first time.
And, most importantly, kiss me every fifteen minutes. Yeah, fifteen.
You wonât have to do thaaat much. Just exist near me. Talk, if you feel like it. Or donât. You can scroll through your phone, rest your head somewhere comfortable, fall quiet⊠I donât mind.
Thereâs something about having you here. It changes the air. Softens it. Makes everything feel⊠less heavy.
Iâll pretend itâs because youâre helping my process. It sounds more professional that way.
But between us, I just donât like the thought of you dealing with everything alone. Not when I can pull you into my world for a little while. Not when I can make sure you breathe.
So come over, cutie. Let me paint. Let me steal glances at you when youâre not looking. Let me pretend Iâm working, when really Iâm just⊠calmer with you here.
And if Thomas complains, Iâll tell him youâre essential. Irreplaceable. A critical part of the entire operation, even.
Donât keep me waiting too long. Iâm already running out of patience⊠and excuses.

Sylus watched from his bed as you paced his bedroom. You were getting ready for bed amongst the pacing, but he'd just woken up for the night.
"He's dying, Sylus. And he's not doing anything about it. Why isn't he doing something? He's a doctor," You rambled, clearly in distress, but there was little he could do. He would cure the doctor himself if he could, for his own peace of mind as well as yours. He didn't want to be a witness to Zayne's death either.
When you were finally in bed with him after you let all of your frustrations out, Sylus pulled you close; he gently rubbed your back to both comfort you, and to help you relax enough to fall asleep. "We'll figure something out, Sweetie."
"I hope so," You said, somewhat defeated. Neither of you were doctors, what could the two of you possibly do that the actual doctors couldn't?
Sylus has more money than you could imagine. He could fund research just for Zayne, and he intended to do just that. When you finally fell into a deep sleep, Sylus replaced himself with the crow plushie he'd won for you at the arcade and headed out to do a day's work. That included finding a cure for Zayne.
The first thing Sylus did was see if the good doctor was still awake. He knew Zayne's schedule could be hectic with emergency surgeries, or just late hours filling out reports. However, if Zayne's asleep, Sylus wasn't going to bother him. He'd surely get a lecture about proper sleep schedules.
Luckily for Sylus, Zayne responded rather quickly. He was still awake, doing some work in his home office. Adjusting his schedule, Sylus informed Zayne he was coming over.
"There wasn't really a reason to come over," Zayne said, letting Sylus into his house.
"Maybe, maybe not," Sylus said as he took a seat on the couch. "I wanted to see your condition in person. Kitten says you're dying and doing nothing."
"This is a medical mystery. Something like this shouldn't even be possible."
"Have you tried resonating with Y/N?"
"We did, yes. It doesn't seem to be related to my Evol."
"Your heart isn't freezing for no reason, Fox."
"Like I said, it's a medical phenomenon. I have been trying things with advice from other doctors. Despite what Y/N said, I'm not just letting it kill me."
"I suppose nothing's worked so far."
"They've given some relief and time, but nothing as permanent as a cure so far."
"We're not going to let you die, Zayne. We'll find a cure."
In that moment, Zayne felt warmth from Sylus' words. But if his suspicions were correct, he had his doubts that he could be cured.
When Sylus left Zayne's house, with all the information he'd gotten from him, he contacted his own trusted medical teams. They'd taken the information, but warned the leader of Onychinus that a cure wouldn't be likely. Using the same words Zayne did; a medical phenomenon.
Zayne's next surprise visit was from you. This time, however, was because Zayne needed to patch you up after a rough battle with wanderers. Thankfully, it was nothing serious. Just some scrapes and bruises that needed to be cleaned and dressed. It would've been nice if you'd been more focused on your own health instead of his.
"I'm giving you a week of medical leave. Make sure Sylus changes your bandages at least once every twenty-four hours. Preferably before bed, but I know he has a different sleep schedule."
"Alright, I'll let him know," You answered, but it was more automatic, like you knew you had to tell him about the injuries anyway. Your focus was clearly somewhere else.
"Staring at my chest won't fix either of our problems."
"I wasn't staring at your chest!
"No? Then what were you staring at?"
"Your heart," You said with a little too much confidence.
"My heart? That's in my chest."
"Okay, I see your point. Is it getting worse..?"
Zayne heard the concern bleeding through your words. He felt warmth in them. "It is worse since you last asked, however, a few treatments have been slowing the progression."
"No cure yet?"
"Not yet."
Zayne messaged Sylus about your injuries before you ever had the chance to call. It made the explaination of them, and the trip to Sylusâ home easier.
Sylus prepared for your arrival with a warm shower and your favorite pajamas pre-warmed in the dryer. After which, Sylus carried you to bed where he laid you down on his chest, and his hand gently rubbed your back.
"You're so warm."
"Am I, Kitten?" Sylus chuckled.
"You are," You hummed, "Zayne could use some of your warmth."
"He could," Sylus agreed. The thought of his warmth being used to save Zayne wasn't one he was against.
Sylus thought about your words as he asked Zayne how he felt the next day. It was getting worse, still no cure. And Sylus had really started to wonder if his warmth could somehow help. Especially with how dodgy Zayne was with what worked.
The only problem was, that warmth is yours. You're the only person he'd ever wanted to hold and cuddle with. To be vulnerable with. And yet⊠the idea of doing that with Zayne didn't repulse him.
Sylus didn't know what to do with that thought.
Spending your medical leave in Sylus' home was definitely the better option for you. Being close to your boyfriend, and spending the entire week with him? A dream come true really. The fact that he's good about changing your bandages was the cherry on top. It would've been better if you weren't preoccupied thinking about Zayne and his mysterious illness. The black-haired man was taking up a lot of your thoughts, even when spending time with your boyfriend.
"How are you feeling?" Zayne asked through the speaker of your phone. You've been calling him every other day to check and see how he was doing. "Have you and Sylus been making sure to clean and change your bandages?"
"Of course. Sy takes very good care of it," You answered. At the same time, Sylus walked into the room. You immediately reached out for him and wasted no time sitting on his lap, wanting him close. "He's here with me now."
"What about you, Doc?" Sylus asked, making sure he held you securely on his lap. "How are you feeling?"
"I'm fine. The ice is still slowly progressing."
"Still nothing on a cure?" You asked with a slight pout.
"No, not yet."
"What has been working?" Sylus asked. While he'd asked before, he'd never asked with you present. He was hoping Zayne wouldn't try and skirt around the answer with you here.
"Oh yeah, that's a good question. I don't think you've told me."
"Heating pads help," Zayne responded, "Trying to keep the affected area warm."
"That's it? Surely there's something else?"
"âŠNo, there isn't."
Sylus picked up on the slight hesitation in Zayne's words. However, it seemed like you didn't. Not with the way you threw your head back onto his shoulder and groaned. Annoyed there was nothing you could do to save your friend.
Zayne had changed the subject from there, making easy conversation with a friendly easy banter inbetween. You tried not to think too much about it, someone else might mistake it for flirting. An idea that you found yourself not too upset about, which you also tried not to think about.
The two of you sat in comfortable silence after you hanged up with Zayne. Sylus held you, snuggling, while you enjoyed his warmth. Normally moments like these would've led to lazy kissing, maybe even something more. This time, you and your boyfriend were too preoccupied thinking about someone else.
"Remember when you said Zayne could use my warmth?" Sylus asked, breaking the silence.
"Yeah, the night I got here. We'd been cuddling as we fell asleep," You responded, wondering where he was going with this.
"What do you think about sharing my warmth with him? Under the assumption he'd allow it."
"Like, cuddling? Since a mere hug likely wouldn't cut it."
"Like cuddling." Sylus agreed, "With you joining us. I wouldn't leave my kitten out."
You thought about it for a moment. The idea of Sylus cuddling with Zayne, even without the context of Zayne's freezing heart, wasn't an idea you hated. Especially since you would be included as well. Though the more you thought about it, you also didn't hate the idea of the two of them cuddling without you. Coming home to that and knowing you'd be allowed to join them. Everything about the scenario sounded nicer than you were willing to admit.
Sylus knows you, very well, and he could tell you weren't against the idea. "It's not a bad idea, is it Kitten?"
"No, it's not," You admitted.
"What else are you thinking about, Sweetie?"
"Coming home to the two of you cuddling, joining after I've washed up. Even you or Zayne joining. It sounds nice."
"It does, doesn't it?"
"What does that mean?" You asked, leaning into him more.
"Have you heard of polygamy?"
"I have."
"Depending on Zayne's thoughts on the matter. We could try that; being a throuple."
"I almost hate how much I like that idea," You said with a sigh. "Just the idea of having feelings for another man when it's you I'm in love with and want to be with. At the same time, it sounds like you do as well; have feelings for someone that isn't me. It being the same person is technically good, I just don't really know how to explain it, it just sounds bad, ya know? And I'm scared it would ruin us."
"I understand what you mean, Kitten," Sylus said, admiring your honesty. "But it's not like that. We wouldn't let it ruin us. We're talking about it now so that won't happen."
You could see in his eyes how certain he was. The two of you had more than willingly put in the work to get this far. You'd put in just as much, if not more, to continue to make it work. Sylus wants a future with you, and you want a future with him. Zayne being a part of that future would be like a frame around a painting. Wanted, but not necessary. If Zayne rejected the two of you, or even just one of you, you knew that everything would work out with Sylus. You're a package deal. Your relationship wasn't in danger. "We'll talk to Zayne about it then, his input is important too."
"Of course, Sweetie." Sylus kissed the top of your head.
Before you knew it, you were all healed up and ready to go back to work. Having spent as much time as possible with Sylus during your stay, you hated leaving, but you knew you'd see him again soon.
Work kept you busy for a while, longer than you liked. Even Sylus was busy with work, having rearranged his schedule while you were recovering to spend as much time with you as possible. The only way either of you had time to check in on Zayne was through a phone call. Where he insisted everything was fine.
Far from it, really. You look beautiful like this, brows knit in pleasure, moaning out his name as the dildo shaped like his cock fucks you in a steady pace that only a fucking machine can.
His only issue is that he isn't there to enjoy the view properly.
So by the time he gets home, he's so hard he can barely think straight. He makes his way up to the bedroom where he knows you'll be, your punishment already in mind.
"Back so soon?" You're laid back on the bed, completely naked, and looking all too satisfied at how well your plan has worked out. The machine sits at the end of the bed, the toy shiny with your slick.
Zayne says nothing, grabbing the silk ties he always uses and gestures for you to put your arms up. Defiance flashes in your eyes for a moment, but seemingly sensing just how intense this punishment is going to be, you obey wordlessly.
He ties your wrists to the headboard carefully, doing the same to your ankles, before setting up the machine between your legs, the silicone toy brushing your entrance.
The slow pace is torturous, just enough to keep you worked up. You expect him to settle at the side of you, maybe use your mouth. But clearly, he won't be doing anything you expect today. Instead, he settles in the armchair across the room, flipping open a book as you squirm.
When the pace starts to increase, pleasure starts to knot in your stomach, the overstimulation making you whine.
"Zayne I don't think I can cum again so soon." As soon as the words leave your mouth, the machine slows, your orgasm ebbing away as dark unamused eyes find yours.
