Robert Eads was a transgender man who transitioned later in life and as such it was deemed inadvisable for him to seek sex reassignment surgery. He was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1996 but was refused treatment by more than a dozen doctors, some for personal reasons and others on the grounds that taking him on as a patient might harm their practice. When he finally found a doctor to treat him in 1997, the cancer had already metastasized to other parts of his body, rendering any further treatments futile. He passed away in 1999. His life and death was the subject of the award-winning documentary Southern Comfort (2001).

As i’m sure many of you have heard, the Trump administration just passed a ruling that would remove LGBT+ anti-discrimination protections in health care and health insurance. I immediately thought of this man’s story when I heard about the ruling. Stories like this are the reason why those protections are necessary.

It’s easy to feel hopeless with all the bad news our community has been bombarded with recently. But we have to keep fighting, and one way we can fight is through legal means.

Here are some organizations who have announced plans to take action in court. If you can donate to any of them, please do!

LAMBDA Legal: one of the first to announce they would take legal action against the ruling, LAMBDA Legal is the oldest and largest national legal organization advocating for LGBTQ+ people and people with HIV.

Transgender Law Center: the largest American transgender-led civil rights organization in the United States. The stated mission of TLC is to connect transgender people and their families to technically sound and culturally competent legal services, increase acceptance and enforcement of laws and policies that support transgender communities, and work to change laws and systems that fail to incorporate the needs and experiences of transgender people.

Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund: Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund is committed to ending discrimination based upon gender identity and expression and to achieving equality for transgender people through public education, test-case litigation, direct legal services, and public policy efforts.

American Civil Liberties Union: a nonprofit organization founded in 1920 “to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States”

Today, Breonna's law was passed. This is a step in the right direction. Next one is to hold people responsible for her death and arrest her murderers and everyone involved in the attempt at cover-up.

I had legitimate tears in my eyes reading what Kenneth, her boyfriend, had to to through after Breonna's murder. That man was being framed for something he didn't do, all after losing his most important person.

It was that easy to jail and charge him on false claims. Why are her murderers still walking free and an innocent man spent time in jail because of a false testimony?

That's time in his life he will never get back, but you know what he'll also never get back and that's also directly on the police? Breonna. And most importantly, Breonna had her life taken from her over a police "mistake". It's time to see the culprits punished.

“but i’m not racist?”: to the Minnesota Freedom Fund (x)

1. “am I free to leave?” or “are you detaining me?” You all know this one. But what to do next? If they say “no you’re not free to leave” or “yes I’m arresting/detaining you” apply #2 below. if they say you are free to leave: you can retreat. If your organizers have made the strategic decision and asked you to stand your ground...that’s a risk-assessment that is up to you and them. All I can say is: if they tell you that you’re free to go but you keep protesting and they approach you again later and try to engage, then ask the question again. Repeat every time a cop approaches you and tries to engage with you. Do not say more words. Do not explain yourself or talk back. Be polite and calm.

2. If you are detained/not free to leave, you’re arrested as far as the constitution is concerned even if they don’t say “I’m arresting you and reading you Miranda rights.” Now you say: “I am now invoking my right to have an attorney present.” That is all you ever need to say to a police officer if they ask you a question. This does not mean you get an attorney. It means they cannot ask you any question unless and until they provide you with an attorney. You do not need to say anything else. I know this is insane but you get more rights if you ask for an attorney than if you say “i am invoking my right to remain silent.” I guess you can say both for a marginal benefit. Can’t stress how important it is to say the attorney thing. (You do not legally need to say it more than once until they get you an attorney, except try to say it again in front of new people/officers so they can’t deny you said it...if/when you get an attorney, ask that advise you on any police attempts to question you again outside of the attorney’s presence. You’re likely to be released from jail without getting an attorney because questioning you is not worth the price of an attorney).

3. “No, I do not consent to you searching my bag/phone/whatever.” Doesn’t matter whether this question is posed to you before or after they say you are “no longer free to leave.” The answer to “can I look at your phone/pockets/whatever?” is always “no.” Never resist the officer if they start to search anyway but assert repeatedly, calmly, and loudly that you do not consent to their search (depending on the context, your consent may or may not be irrelevant to the legality of their search but it’s important to assert this and leave that analysis for later....)

4. Bonus: if you are filming the police, stand at a safe distance so they can’t accuse you of interfering with police work and apply #1 and #3 as needed. If you’re an experienced protestor you can try “I’m standing far away from you. I am filming publicly visible events that are unfolding in a public space.” Do not engage if they talk back, keep applying the tools above.
