if there was anything that dewey was, it was unaware of the setting he was in. other people were probably better at being aware of where their feet were. there were people that had been to balls before where they had to be aware of where their feet were. dewey wasn't used to being at places like this and he'd gotten himself into plenty of trouble being around this many people at once. dewey knew that there were people from all over elias here tonight. he had been scared that scrooge would show up, but then he saw his uncle was going to find some artifact... or something.
so he wasn't paying as much attention as he should. dewey immediately moved off the dress as he heard the voice. he looked down at the dress, sure that he hadn't torn it or something. "sorry!" he looked up. "it didn't tear and there's no dirt from my shoes or anything." he looked at lottie, embarrassed. "i'm not used to these events."
hands dart down to smooth her skirt, swishing the fabric around for careful inspection—once, twice, then a third time, even when he says nothing happened. you can never be too certain. the tiny crease between her brows disappears almost instantly, worry melting into relief, as she springs back to herself. “ whew! you sure had me worried for a second there. but it’s no worries! just mind where you’re steppin’ next time, alright? then we’ll be RIGHT AS RAIN. ” i’m not used to these events. “ the way you’re movin’, i would’ve known. ” she teases, hands settling at her sides now. “ but you clean up nice, so you’d get the benefit of the doubt. ” her gaze drifts to his shirt and tie, lingering on the cheerful scatter of florals against the blue; she supposes that’s his equivalent to her pink ribbons and bows, and lottie can’t help but respect someone so committed to their own sense of style. “ you can never go wrong with a little pattern. ”
⸻ 🌻 THE SOLSTICE BALL HAD ALREADY BECOME AN smearing-blur of golds &. silvers by the time an voice cut through the music.
While without her glasses ⸻ smokey-quartz couldn't distinguish exists ⸻ melted shapes ⸻ wounded lights ⸻ or where she was going in the first place ⸻ let alone stepping. “ I'm incredibly sorry ⸻ ” as she feels her stomach tighten lifting her foot immediately. “ ⸻ I can barely see where I'm going. &. I didn't mean to step on your dress. ” Unfortunately . . . stepping on there blurred unabashedly-pink dress was not the only piece of her that has found its way onto there dress.
As heat gathered beneath her cheeks ⸻ suddenly embarrassed ⸻ slightly ashamed ⸻ what's even worse than her sudden blindness was the suffocating presence of the Opaline Wisteria. Starting with its perfumed fragrance that sticks to one ⸻ as an creamy coconut-honey warmed by molten amber &. smooth vanilla. While the strange sweetness of an midnight-summer that never reached morning. But its the long-white blossoms glowing softly above them was the bigger problem.
As the mutation has been shedding loosen petals above her that dissolve into cold ⸻ white-glitter from the falling blossoms tracing icy-constellations on the polished-marble floor of the ballroom . . . trailing &. blooming behind her every uncertain step she took. While cold-white glitter was drifting over the stranger ⸻ &. getting . . . in there tulle to. An soft sigh escaped her ⸻ as an blind wallflower ⸻ the one that didn't want to bloom in time to matter right now.
Was heavily from head-to-floral-growth covered all over in that cold white-glitter. “ &. that is . . . also mine. ”
her gaze softens when she lays eyes on the person, who is just a girl—the poor thing is almost trembling in her boots. lottie’s expression melts into something gentler, sweeter, sympathetic. “ you’re tellin’ me you’ve been goin’ ’round blind as a bat? ” her brows lift, lips parting in genuine disbelief before her expression crumples into pity. “ oh, honey ... don’t you have contacts? ” it’s not the aroma of coconut honey, amber, and vanilla that particularly bothers her; in fact, quite the opposite. lottie wears her own vanilla perfume, and she’s spent plenty of time in rooms sweeter than a candy shop, filled with expensive fragrances handcrafted from the finest ingredients money can buy. she’s never been one to shy away from smelling like dessert. this is naturally made, but in a different way, one that even lottie can distinguish as magic. she moves the skirt of her dress back toward herself when willow lifts her foot, blossoms catching on fabric turning to glitter, which lottie is most definitely not opposed to. her attention drops to the petals scattered beneath them; with all the care one might give fine lace, she stoops to scoop a few into the palm of her gloved hand. “ well, would you look at that, ” she breathes, her voice full of wonder, turning one petal delicately between her fingers. “ shoot ... i should’ve called you when i needed floral arrangements. ” a bright smile finds its way onto her face as she looks back up at willow. “ i haven’t seen much like this before. ”

lottie’s always known there’s something elitist about these kinds of events; the same rotating bill of faces, the same industries. her father, though, at least back in new orleans, has always held a different place in their city. the LA BOUFF FORTUNE was built in hospitality, after all—a kind of wealth meant to be shared, and generosity that has cemented itself as a fixture of the community. but some of those more exclusionary circles are simply unavoidable, especially when invitations arrive for her and big daddy to cross state lines and attend galas in NEW YORK, where the northern attitude has always felt just a touch colder than the southern hospitality she was raised on. looking back, though, those galas were just fine, because lottie had— “ katie! ” she chirps, her face lighting up the moment she spots the other a few feet away. lottie is quick to close the distance, heels clicking across the floor in a brisk, practiced rhythm without so much as the hint of a stumble; a pace that would sent someone else sprawling, but second nature to lottie la bouff. arms sweep the other into a warm, tight embrace before drawing back just enough to keep both hands resting on her shoulders. “ i didn’t have the faintest idea you were comin’ tonight! last i heard, you’d all but retired from these typa functions, ” she gushes, giving kate’s shoulders an affectionate squeeze. “ but that was in new york, and now we’re here, so—how’ve you been? ”

lottie remembers a time when fairy tales were fiction. they were the standard by which she measured so many things, of course: how she wanted to live, the kind of love she hoped to find, the prince she always imagined. the third, at least, had always seemed tangible enough. but the years have brought more than a few magical mishaps & lottie can happily admit she’s been proven wrong about what belongs only in storybooks. the same applies to wishes, too; once upon a time, wishing on stars was for babies. now, lottie just has to go when she catches sight of a wishing well just beyond the ballroom windows, tucked away on the grounds outside. “ ariel! ” she chirps, slipping up beside her landbound friend and happily looping a gloved arm through hers before she has much chance to object. “ you’ve gotta come with me! there’s a well right outside, and i just know we’re s’posed to make a wish tonight. ”

with its old-time grandeur, the la bouff estate in new elias is nothing short of impressive—maybe paling in comparison to scrooge mcduck’s, objectively, though comparing fortunes has never been something lottie’s particularly cared to do. her doors are almost always open, whether to friends dropping by for the afternoon, or family, should her daddy ever decide to hop on a plane. today, though, the visit comes with a purpose. well—half a purpose. there’s style consulting to be done, but that doesn’t mean the afternoon can’t double as an excuse to dine, dish, and get ready together in the comfort of her dressing room. “ now, sylvie—i know your roommates may be miners, but that does not mean they know the first thing about color-coordination! RED RUBIES? with that dress?” she shoots the suggestion a thoroughly skeptical look before turning back to her jewelry dresser, sliding out velvet-lined trays one after another. lottie carefully inspects each piece in turn, plucking a ring from its slot to hold between two fingers in the light before nestling it neatly back into place. every few seconds, her gaze darts between the jewel in her hand and the shade of sylvie’s gown. “ mm-mm. absolutely not. ”

The dessert table had become Donnie's unofficial headquarters. Not because he had a particular sweet tooth. Okay... maybe a little because of the sweet tooth. A small plate balanced easily in one hand while the other reached for yet another chocolate-covered strawberry. He'd already decided that whoever catered the Summer Solstice Ball deserved some sort of award. Or at the very least, a raise. His attention drifted back toward the dance floor as another song began. A smile tugged at the corner of his mouth as he watched a man struggle to keep up with his partner.
He popped the strawberry into his mouth, chewing thoughtfully as another couple glided past. Donnie wasn't judging. Well...maybe a little. Ballroom dancing had always fascinated him. There was something satisfying about two people moving so seamlessly together that they hardly seemed to think about it. He'd spent enough time learning to dance with Jasper to recognize good technique when he saw it, though he'd happily keep that little fact to himself. People tended to assume the engineer couldn't dance. He never bothered correcting them. It was funnier that way.
His eyes wandered toward the entrance for what had to be the fifth time in as many minutes before returning to the dancers. Another couple spun across the floor. Donnie nodded approvingly before reaching for a miniature éclair. He thought to himself before finally noticing someone nearby. Without missing a beat, he offered the dessert tray in their direction. "Help me settle an argument with myself." His smile widened. "Who's the best dancer in the room so far? Because I'm keeping score, and I think I've found the current frontrunners."
“ excludin’ yours truly— ” she begins with an easy grin, light enough to keep it from sounding boastful; though, for the record, lottie means every word. a girl doesn’t spend years taking ballroom lessons just to hide it at a ball! she’s practiced the art since she was little enough to stand on her daddy’s shoes. but this isn’t about her. it’s about judging everyone else’s dancing, a pastime she’s happily devoted a good portion of the evening to. she hums thoughtfully, using the edge of her tiny fork to separate another bite of tiramisu on the dessert plate balanced in her hand.
“ the royals usually have that title in the bag, ’specially the ones born into it. ” her good friend naveen, naturally, falls under that umbrella, though she hasn’t caught him on the dance floor tonight. and around here, there are charmonts everywhere—kings, queens, their consorts, cousins, distant relations ... goodness, may as well bring out the whole chessboard while they’re at it. “ i would say queen ella, but didn’t she have that little mishap where her partner spun her right into somebody? ” she winces sympathetically before her hand hovers over her chest. “ bless her heart; those things just happen … actually, katie’s been doin’ awfully well tonight! ” she says with unmistakable pride, brightening at the mention. “ she’s always been a beautiful dancer—even when we were younger. ” lottie points a gloved finger toward a figure across the ballroom. “ there! dressed in plum. ” her head turns upwards to face donnie, an eager and curious smile across her face. “ but what about you? who were you thinkin’? ”

a gown this heavy is not for the weak. but lottie, the dedicated woman she is, has spent years training for ballgowns twice this size. and when you dedicate yourself to something the way lottie has committed herself to always looking her best—the way she does in this dress & in all of her dresses—you learn to stride with ease and glide with a practiced grace, even weighed down by pounds of tulle. that ability, of course, is interrupted when she feels a sharp tug backward as she tries to step forward, her head snapping around toward the source. “ ex-cuse me! ” she huffs, gathering handfuls of fabric at the hem of her gown, ready to lift it free. “ you’re on my dress. ”

The feeling of a ball was bittersweet for Aurora. The last time she was here, she was dancing in the arms of her beloved Philip. Now she remained on the dance floor, floating in space with no tether. She had gotten used to the feeling. The emptiness, the sadness. Moments like this opened old wounds, but tonight she would persevere as she always did. "I wonder where Minnie found all these acrobats. They're spectacular."
“ wouldn’t put it past miss mouse to keep connections with a bunch of high-flyin’ showfolk, ” she says, sidling up beside aurora to watch the performers. another acrobat lands a flawless flip, and lottie lets out an impressed hum. “ just watchin’ ’em’s enough to wear a girl out. ” her eyes wander from the crown of aurora’s hair all the way to the hem of her gown before lighting up. “ well, would you look at you, rory! i don’t think i’ve ever seen you all dolled up like this, ” she beams. “ then again, i usually only ever see you over at tia[na]’s palace. ” and those times consist mainly of waitress uniforms. she reaches out to smooth an imaginary wrinkle from aurora’s sleeve before pulling her hand back with a satisfied nod. “ you look absolutely precious. no—DOWNRIGHT GORGEOUS. and i’m gonna go out on a limb and say you’re feelin’ just as pretty as you look tonight? a night like this deserves a girl who knows she looks beautiful. ”
the summer solstice ball, 2026 : when lottie received the invitation, she thought less of how ominous it was, with no return address, and only considered it mysterious; its lack of identification made it seem all the more elegant. a socialite is invited to many things, after all, and every invitation should be treated with no less importance than another—especially in appearances. so she sifted through her collection of ballgowns and knew, in her heart, exactly which one was summer-solstice ready.
if you wanted proof that diamonds are a girl’s best friend, you’d look to charlotte’s earrings—a chunky pair of pink and white diamond dangles, each one real and, not to mention, ethically sourced! she’s accessorizing with satin gloves, and as for her hair, she’s opted to pin her blonde locks into a neat bun. make-up wise, she’s chosen glittery purple eyeshadow paired with a nude lip. and finally, her gown follows the unofficial staple she's set for herself: glamorous and UNABASHEDLY PINK, this time in an almost-mermaid silhouette, a pale pink confection patterned with white bows and finished with one larger bow at the front to tie it all together.
