A thing I really, really love about The Roots of Chaos series is how Shannon just completely refuses to incorporate internalized homophobia into it, even though, logically, it would make perfect sense to do so.
Shannon made a world dependent on bloodlines, but instead of making heterosexuality a norm, she gracefully avoided it. In any instance when she introduces an LGBT character, she provides a simple, yet very effective explanation as to why this doesn't propose a problem to their heritage at all.
Sabran marries and gets pregnant, but ultimately ends up with Ead and their relationship works out.
Wulfert's parents are two Lords that had children through former marriages, so they have a secured heir.
And probably the most interesting take is the Priory itself, especially with Tunuva and Esbar who are both in love with each other, but have decided to have children with men in order to serve their community. Their relationship is never hindered by their need to lay with a man. There is neither jealousy nor misunderstanding.
Shannon basically doesn't offer a single opening for the reader to question why homosexuality is so normalized in her world because, in the end, it doesn't really matter. LGBT characters are a crucial part of this story and Shannon eradicates any potential opportunity to undermine their existence.
It's refreshing. It's enjoyable. And, most of all, it's satisfying.

Reading the Priory first and then reading a Day of Fallen Night adds a lot of context for some characters. Like when weβre introduced to Glorian Shieldheart, sheβs been a legend for centuries, a force of nature, a warrior who carried her baby on her hip as she led her people to victory. However when she appears in a Day of Fallen Night, itβs like sheβs a child, sheβs loves sweets and playing in the snow with her friends, she loves horseback riding, she loves her papa, sheβs scared of her mom, she just wants her mom to be proud, she wants to be a good queen, thereβs so much burden on her, sheβs a child who just lost her parents and now needs to bear a child herself. Sheβs a child and she now must lead to country to war. Sheβs just a child.

i actually really love how samantha shannon is handling trans/nonbinary characters in her roots of chaos world. they blend seamlessly into her world building, so much so that i don't always notice there's something different. non binary noble? they sure as fuck don't want to be called lord or lady! they are styled 'lade'.
someone uses they/them pronouns? cool! we're not going to waste time going through an explaining that. it's just instant, all our characters refer to the person's preferred pronouns without any second thought.
she really keeps saying, yeah? this story has dragons and witches and wyverns. and it's gonna be queernorm too. don't like it? well fuck off.
esbar and tunuva...i love u middle aged lesbians
