"Prayer" - Marie Howe
Someone or something is leaning close to me now trying to tell me the one true story of my life: one note, low as a bass drum, beaten over and over: Itâs beginning summer, and the man I love has forgotten my smell the cries I made when he touched me, and my laughter when he picked me up and carried me, still laughing, and laid me down, among the scattered daffodils on the dining room table. And Jane is dead, and I want to go where she went, where my brother went, and whoever it is that whispered to me when I was a child in my fatherâs bed is come back now: and I canât stop hearing: This is the way it is, the way it always was and will beâ beaten over and overâpanicking on street corners, or crouched in the back of taxicabs, afraid Iâll cry out in jammed traffic, and no one will know me or know where to bring me. There is, I almost remember, another story: It runs alongside this one like a brook beside a train. The sparrows know it; the grass rises with it. The wind moves through the highest tree branches without seeming to hurt them. Tell me. Who was I when I used to call your name?

The Lovers, Dorianne Laux
sleepanddream:
poetry365:
She is about to come. This time, they are sitting up, joined below the belly, feet cupped like sleek hands praying at the base of each otherâs spines. And when something lifts within her toward a light sheâs sure, once again, she canât bear, she opens her eyes and sees his face is turned away, one arm behind him, hands splayed palm down on the mattress, to brace himself so he can lever his hips, touch with the bright tip the innermost spot. And she finds she canât bear itâ not his beautiful neck, stretched and corded, not his hair fallen to one side like beach grass, not the curved wing of his ear, washed thin with daylight, deep pink of the inner bodyâ what she canât bear is that she canât see his face, not that she thinks this exactlyâshe is rocking and breathingâitâs more her bodyâs though, opening, as it is, into its own sheer truth. So that when her hand lifts of its own violation and slaps him, twice on the chest, on that pad of muscled flesh just above the nipple, slaps him twice, fast, like a nursing child trying to get a motherâs attention, sheâs startled by the sound, though when he turns his face to hersâ which is what her body wants, his eyes pulled open, as if she had bittenâ she does reach out and bite him, on the shoulder, not hard, but with the power infants have over those who have borne them, tied as they are to the body, and so, tied to the pleasure, the exquisite pain of this world. And when she lifts her face he sees where sheâs gone, knows she canât speak, is traveling toward something essential, toward the core of her need, so he simply watches, steadily, with an animal calm as she arches and screams, watches the face that, if she could see it, she would never let him see.
Iâm so sure I havenât posted this poem before and yes Iâve read it but as I was typing it out I couldnât help but feel that Iâd already done it before. I hadnât realized how much this poem had struck me or stuck with me as it obviously seems to have done. All the better.

You thought all this?ďżź
I thought most of it. You reflect with an older mind. But the ideas are still there. Memory has substance. It's not nothing.
â Cormac McCarthy, Stella Maris
(Alfred A. Knopf, 2023)
For me, the imagination is essentially religious as it reaches beyond truth toward meaning. And meaning itself is a kind of truth unburdened by proof. Science has its duty to truth, and so it should, but the songwriter and the poet move beyond what is known into the unknown world. They spend their time in a kind of dream world â a realm where God and his ghosts dwell, banished there by grim reason and rationality. This is our absurd and deluded dominion in all its feverish wonder. It is the enchanted forest. This is the world from where I draw my songs.Â
Nick Cave, from âThe Red Hand Filesâ
â Not only is âTangled Up In Blue,â a reference to Joni Mitchellâs album, âBlue,â but Dylanâs New York sessions for âBlood On the Tracks,â features open tunings on the acoustic guitar, reminiscent of âBlue.â
âJoel Bernstein gave me a tape of it, and it was really good, it was really good. But people said, âOh, itâs like a Joni Mitchell album,â so he went and recut it with his brother in Minnesota. They butchered it all up. They stomped all over it. But originally the writing was different, it was more vulnerable, and the orchestration was subtle, ââ
âAnd one night I had a party here â and Bob crashed it. And the bootleg of that first âBlood On the Tracks,â was playing. They were out in the garden, and somebody said that Bob wanted to see me. And the bootleg was still playing and I said, âWhy didnât you put that one out?â And he said, âSomebody stole the tape.â Which was not true. He chickened out. People said it was like a Joni Mitchell album. There was some stylistic production to it, but not the material. It was more honest. â He took the vulnerability out of it, and in the process he took the depth out. The New York sessions were touching. The Minnesota sessions were not touching at all. He asserted himself again as a man.â
âJoni Mitchell in an interview with David Yaffe, âReckless Daughter.â discussing the New York Sessions for âBlood On the Tracks.â
