The Durham Human Relations Commission has asked federal immigration officials to stop deporting young people from the city after a high school student was arrested outside his parents’ home by U.S. Immigration Customs and Enforcement agents as he left for school last Thursday morning.

Wildin David Guillen Acosta, an 18-year-old senior at Riverside High School, was arrested after an immigration judge in Charlotte ordered his removal from the country last year. Federal officers had stopped Acosta at the Texas border in 2014 after he had fled his native Honduras, and he was ordered deported after failing to show up for an immigration hearing, according to his mother, Dilsia Acosta.

You may not know it, but America has a shadow system of privately run prisons that exclusively hold noncitizens. And inmates in these facilities are dying from medical neglect.

Gerardo Corrales, a 19 year old paralyzed from the chest down who uses a wheelchair, out of the hellhole for-profit Adelanto immigration prison where he’s experienced extreme medical abuse at the hands of ICE and the GEO Group prison company. He’s finally been granted bond, but it is $10,000. His family is working class and just doesn’t have that kind of money. His sister-in-law Tanya started a fundraiser on GoFundMe to raise the money to finally bring him home. PLEASE DONATE AND SHARE WIDELY. Him being trapped another day away from his mother because of a lack of money is just wrong.

He got probation for 10 years. He didn’t get his job back, and was kicked off the force forever–at least in that precinct.

This kick is from a person trained in martial arts. The balance, the upright torso, the high chamber. It’s a classic Round Kick. And this is what this creep has done with his training. It’s sheer perversion to use it this way–at least as I learned it; from a Korean Great Grandmaster. I know there are more modern forms of combat training and self defense that have eschewed the philosophies of martial arts and offer training in nothing but brute force. Despite that, he has made a clear choice. He has chosen Evil. Despite where you trained, it is evil to take superior combat skills and use them against a weaker, confined person. It is the height of barbarism, it is torture, it’s sick sport. Like blasting a bird with a bazooka just to see it explode.

Jennicet Gutiérrez is the first transgender person to publicly call out the president around immigration and the torture and rape transgender immigrants often experience inside detention centers. Gutiérrez was in a room full of national LGBT leaders who gathered to celebrate the many accomplishments of the movement. You would imagine this would be a place to feel seen, safe, and validated. That was not the case.

As soon as Gutiérrez proceeded to speak truth and ask the President as to why he is not releasing our trans detainees who face violence, the crowd began to jeer, boo, and hiss. As she continued, the crowd then began to drown her and chant, “OBAMA! OBAMA!”

A transgender woman of color and undocumented leader in the immigrant rights and LGBT movement was booed and silenced by not only the state, but by the very same movement that purports to uplift and celebrate the transgender community.

As her voice, filled with passion and conviction, broke through the White House room, she was met by negativity, intolerance, and stares of disapproval from her peers. Her voice was carried by the thousands of transgender women considered disposable by the nation, facing deportation, detention, and brutal transphobic violence.

Her voice and visibility in that moment was shunned and shamed as inappropriate by a roomful of leaders who then applauded as the President lamented violence against transgender women of color, violence that his actions have contributed to by not taking action against the detention centers. Her voice is one of few transgender women of color immigrants who are bringing national visibility to this issue of the detention centers. Her voice carried the weight of the communities who are screaming inside detention centers demanding to be freed. Her voice was heard and ridiculed by many who claim to fight for transgender communities and also are involved in LGBT immigrant rights issues.

Mr. Hidalgo has been living in the United States since he was a young boy, and he has U.S. citizen children.  He is neither a flight risk nor a danger to the community. In fact, he is an asset to the community. He is a dear friend of ours and has the support of the community.  Mr. Hidalgo has already spent 6 months in immigration detention.  He was released on bond, but ICE re-detained him last month.   We are concerned that Mr. Hidalgo’s re-detention is in retaliation for his exercise of his First Amendment rights. Mr. Hidalgo has been very active with CIVIC and with other immigrant rights groups. He has been advocating against the expansion of the Adelanto Detention Facility and LA County’s 287(g) agreement. Mr. Hidalgo should not be in immigration detention again, and ICE has the discretion to release him.  We ask that ICE release him immediately.

Emergency Rally to Free Amado Hernandez and Reunite Him with His Family

Could be deported any minute!

BRADENTON, FL.—Community members are holding a rally Friday to stop the deportation of Amado Hernandez. His US Citizen daughter, legal permanent resident wife, and his community need him to stay in the United States. Church members and others are coming to support the family in their time of need.

Once again, a Florida family has been torn apart by the breakneck pace of deportations under the Obama Administration. No one knows better than this Bradenton family the rift between the Obama Administration says, and what it does on immigration enforcement.  

In July 2012, Amado was detained for driving without a license. Despite being a low priority case, and despite the extreme hardship his family would face without him, Amado was snatched away from his family and deported in 2013. Despite a prosecutorial discretion request based on the Morton Memo guidelines being filed on his behalf, ICE deported him. Doing what any good father would do, he returned to support his family.

Amado Hernandez came to the United States when he was just 17 years old. He was detained upon arrival, released, and soon thereafter, was granted a work permit. Because he was a minor at the time, Amado was not the recipient of a notice to appear in court that was issued in his name. When his court date came without his knowledge, he was ordered deported in absentia. 

Never being told about his day in court, Amado moved on with his life. He married his childhood sweetheart, Wendy, a legal permanent resident, with whom he has been for nearly ten years. Amado and Wendy are the proud parents of a US citizen baby girl, Gianella, who depends on him for emotional and financial support. 

Amado has never committed any crime during his life in the United States; he has been an upstanding member of his community, involved in community sports and been a star player in several local soccer teams.

Being a responsible father should not be a crime.  Wendy will not be able to subsist without him much longer, placing Gianella’s well-being in jeopardy.  The Bradenton community is rallying around Amado and his family to ask that discretion is granted in this case and calling upon Senators Nelson and Rubio to step in and aid in reuniting this family.
