Chapter Preview

“Can you train me?” Katara blurted out as she met the eyes of his mask again.

Blue took a step back in shock. He clearly did not expect her to ask this.

Feeling more confident, Katara took a step towards him.

“It’s just that—you were able to save me from those men while I didn’t do anything—and basically, I just want to be able to defend myself… without bending.”

Blue’s shoulders loosened as he assessed her for a moment. This time it was Katara’s turn to wait for a response.

Work Synopsis

Wandering alone in the lower-ring of Ba Sing Se, Katara finds herself desperately trying to outrun a couple of brutish men, hellbent on capturing her—and gods know what they’d do once they get to her.

The Blue Spirit finds her, cornered and bleeding. Making quick work of her attackers, he whisks her off to safety.

Feeling dejected that she wasn’t able to defend for herself, Katara sets out to find The Blue Spirit to beg for training.

Prince Zuko reluctantly agrees.

Many people are complaining about this scene just because it's different from the cartoon, saying that Zuko is out of character.

But to me, this change actually shows his character perfectly.

Zuko is a thief in both the cartoon and the live-action. Neither can be justified, but it just shows how complex of a character he is. And we have to remember, Zuko hasn't chosen the good side yet, even though he has a good side in him.

People might say, "But, he wouldn't steal from a pregnant woman."

Just because is not in the cartoon, doesn't mean he wouldn't. The thing is, people only focus on that one part and completely ignore the rest of the details.

In the cartoon, right before Zuko meets that pregnant woman, he literally steals Song’s ostrich-horse. And there’s no scene where he feels guilty or tries to make up for it. Nobody criticizes that part, because they know Zuko is complicated.

Meanwhile, in the live-action, Zuko runs into the mother and her newborn baby again in Ba Sing Se. He still remembers his mistake, also he uses his alter ego help them out by giving them supplies and returning the baby's toy. [Season 2, episode 6]

This is why I say this scene is so Zuko. Honestly, it’s even more Zuko than the cartoon. Because, he makes mistakes, and then he fixes them. That is the core of his entire character arc.

Like there's a line in the Search where someone is telling Zuko that a family is like a country and strongly implying that the fact that Zuko's family is in shambles will reflect on him as a ruler, and this is the motivation for him to find Ursa. Which by itself is not bad, it makes sense for Zuko to want to reunite with his mom, but the idea that he HAS to because otherwise he will be a bad ruler implies that Zuko is somehow at fault for his family situation, and that this is something that needs a literal fix.

The gaang should have been like, "Zuko, we're your family now, you don't need blood relatives to have a family."

Like, the fact that the story presents this argument and lets it go unquestioned is also what leads to Zuko being manipulated by his father and sister, again.

Similarly, Aang in the movie believes that finding this staff will "bring back his people," but what it will actually do is give random people airbending, not bring anyone back or recreate air nomad culture. Only Aang can keep his culture alive, and Katara's response in that scene where he says it will bring them back should be "it won't. Nothing will. But we're still here for you anyway."

Nothing is going to undo the wrongs of the past, but that doesn't mean you're alone.
