Amber knew from a young age what the bottom looked like. Her father was an addict and at 3 years old, she witnessed her father smack her mother around. She tried to make things better, to get close to her dad but whenever she tried, he pushed her away from him. So as she grew up, she stopped trying. She stayed close to her mother and tried to help her as much as possible. When she was 3, Alex stole a car to make sure she got to the hospital after she had the flu and her fever began to spike higher and higher. That was the first foster home.
Over the span of 7 years, she was in and out of foster care with Aaron and Alex. It made her more and more anxious every time they got placed back with Helen. And then Alex left. They day he said goodbye, she acted tough, but all she wanted to do was beg him to take her with him. She was stuck with Aaron and Helen for years, being a caretaker for both. Most times, Aaron was lucid but every so often, there would be episodes. She was truant more often than not, helping her family. But she was smart. She caught things quickly, and while she may not be there, she always handed in her work. Aaron consistently said she was just like Alex; smart, strong and stubborn.
When she graduated, she took on taking care of them even more than she had. She worked part time at a diner, but after 9 months, she was fired  for missing some shifts. They relied off of the money Alex sent them, and she tried her best not to bother him and to keep her head down. And then Aaron broke. She was cooking dinner, chopping up peppers when Aaron, her big brother who had loved her her whole life, slammed her into the counter and tried to stab her. She fought him off, getting some minor cuts and one slice down her arm before she locked herself in her bathroom and called Alex after she called 911.
She went to the hospital with Aaron, got 39 stitches in her arm and then sat by his side the whole night. When Alex got there, she let herself go and sobbed in his arms for a solid half hour before they made the decision to commit Aaron. It was the worst decision she had ever had to make in her life. When she got home, her mom talked to her and essentially made her go to school, stating that she needed to do it for herself. So she did. She went to the University of Iowa, just like Alex and for med school, Boston University School of Medicine. She did her residency at MassGen and thatâs where she met Max.
Max was in her intern class, had been an addicts kid just like her, and had the most beautiful eyes sheâd ever seen. For the next 3 years, they worked side by side. She specialized in Pediatrics, he specialized in Cardio. They pushed each other but it worked. It worked so well that they married, and while she invited Alex, he didnât show up. Neither did her mom. She was sad but she understood and she smiled through it anyway. Two years later, they had a beautiful baby boy named Cameron Alexander, after her favorite brother.
But then Max started the cycle again. And she was once again the 3 year old little girl watching her dad get high except now she had an actual three year old who was depending on her. He didnât get a chance to hit her because the day he tried, she knocked him out with the frying pan in her hands. She moved out, and started to raise her son on her own. The court found her in favor for custody and she tried her best to keep the balance.
When her son turned 10, she decided she needed a change. So she picked up and moved to Seattle, where she knew her brother and her sister in law and their kids were. She needed family and when she called Seattle Grace, they were happy to accept another Karev.
