white people are so fucking annoying like iâm still so mad about that person calling sinners âhet slopâ like, to watch sammie and pearline fall in love in a night and be separated by death within hours and then later see he named his bar/band after her all those years later
to see delta slim, who met sammie HOURS PRIOR and gave his life to make sure sammie was able to live and shine with his gifts forever
to see smoke and annie, separated by love and grief over the death of their infant daughter and united by the same things
to see stack and mary separated by the racial dynamics of their time and the dangers of society, given a second chance in death to walk the world together forever
to see grace fucking chow!!!! literally kill her husband and go down with him in flames because of the love for her daughter
to see sammie! sweet sammie moore the preacher boy who only wanted to play his music and let his light shine, unknowingly piercing the veil between life and death, inviting the ancestors and descendants to every party he plays, who was willing to die for the love of music and his freedom! who defeated the evil with the power of music and ancestry and got to LIVE!
to see smoke die in acceptance after slaying the kkk after fighting off vampires for the entire night and having to stab the love of his life in the chest, to see him reunite with her and their child after a night of horror
to see smoke and stack lovingly embrace and try to build a communal space for their community and family to be free of all struggles just for a few hours and be torn apart
to see ALL OF THIS and reduce the movie to, âhet slopâ is just insane and racist like thereâs no other way to slice it
Annie is a force of nature when she challenges Cornbread. She is the gravitational point for all the other characters. Cornbread tries to move around her, to address Smoke, because it's Elijah who is considered the weaker link, not she. Yet he does not succeed because Annie's concerns are not dismissed. She is the carrier of knowledge, of tradition. All the characters in that room have her in high regard. She is LISTENED to and she is never treated as some paranoid, hysterical woman. I found it refreshing.
Something I love about the Sinners movie is it reminded me that some of the best stories are "one night" stories. There have been so many long con world ending save the universe humanity at stake the villain is the government stories for a while that I lost sight of one of my favorite stories- where some fuck shit goes down for One Day maybe One Week with a small crew of people Inextricably Familiar with each other and the end is like "ay that shit was crazy"
Thanks for the reminder Ryan Coogler

I love how "Sinners" didn't villify the sinners in the movie. Sammie's father told him that playing music for "drunkards and philanderers who abandon their family responbilities to sweat all over each other" was a sin. And he was right about the kind of people going to the juke joint: Delta Slim is an alcoholic, and Pearline a cheater. It would have been easy to villify them, but the movie tells us that despite their flaws, they are humans worthy of love, respect and freedom.
Delta Slim drinks because he's traumatized by the horrors Black people of his time face. And he's kind and compassionate, encouraging and reassuring Sammie, and sacrificing himself to save everyone else.
Pearline literally saved Sammie's life and sacrificed herself to protect him, a boy she had only known for a day. It shows her kindness because she could have easily stayed back when Remmick tried to bite Sammy and not endangered her life more than necessary.
The movie shows us that preachers blindly condemning those sinners are wrong: Sammie is only alive because drunkards, philanderers and gangsters (Smoke) gave their lives to protect him. They are people, with flaws and qualities.
I love how nuanced the movie is: Sammie's father is not wrong about the kind of people Sammie wants to associate with and their potential bad influence, but he's wrong about them being evil and not deserving of respect.
remmick and the vampires present a false dichotomy
Hogwood (the man who sold the twins the mill) and the KKK are very obviously bad, they are outright malicious bigotry, they use the n-word and plan to lynch the moore's and their community, they are so blatantly racist and hateful it's unavoidably obvious
remmick and the vampires however say that they believe in equality, say that they want to create a community, and yet remmick's goal throught the movie is to both metaphorically and literally steal sammie's ability for his own goal of reconnecting with his irish ancestors, a white man wants to harm a young and upcoming black man and use talents for his own goals without giving any regard to said black man's autonomy or agency
when sammie sings 'I lied to you' in the juke joint and calls forth the spirits from the past and future, it's a blend of cultures; west african, east asian, native american, and african american song and dance blend together across time and space to tell the stories of blues; where it takes its inspiration from, the music genres it then inspired, the complex history of black american culture and its intersections with other peoples of colour in the USA
when remmick and the vampires kill and turn the people in the juke joint, and then perform rocky road to dublin, only remmick's irish culture is on display, there is no influence from the black and asian people he has forcibly assimilated into his song, it's juxtaposition with the earlier scene is blatant, remmick is more than happy to assimilate people of colour into his 'community' of 'equals', and yet its only whiteness that is celebrated, that is normative
remmick claims that he's doing people a favour by turning them immortal, conviently ignoring that he literally has to suck the life out of them to do so, trapping their spirits on earth, he claims that he's the good guy, that the KKK were gonna come and lynch everyone at the joint in the morning anyways, conviently ignoring that he's doing the exact same thing; a white man leading a mob to kill a bunch of black people
in the final confrontation with sammie remmick repeatedly dunks him into the river, a forceful baptism. both the celtic irish and enslaved west africans had their religions suppressed and destroyed by colonialsm, had christianity forced upon them by the british empire, and in that scene we see remmick repeating that cycle, using christianity to inflict harm, and sammie reclaiming christianity, despite all the complex emotions he has arround it, as many colonised peoples have and still do, when he recites the lord's prayer
remmick and the vampires are no less racist than hogwood and the KKK, are no less predatory or evil, they're just less blantant about their bigotry, they represent the system, the normalised white supremacy that is seeped into the very foundation of culture in america, the point isnt that remmick would call any of the black characters in the movie the n-word, i dont think he would, the point is that his exploitation and desacration and inserting-himself-into-when-he-wasn't-invited of the juke joint is a microcosm of what white people have done to black american arts and culture since ever since there have been black and white people in america, and even before that
theres a reason vultures are shown early on in this movie
I really like how Pluribus and Sinners tackle the loss of individuality in different ways
Remmickâs Vampire Hivemind is a conquest of colonialism. He wants every culture but predominantly HIS culture layered atop them. He is crossing seas and attacking marginalized people to slowly take their lands, their homes, and everything about them that he finds amusing. He wants to be âculturedâ but still on top of the heap.
The Plurbs Hivemind is a conquest of corporate. They areâexplicitlyâunsustainable as a group, forced to literally devour themselves. Even the people who are individuals and want to help them are future prey, more to add to the group, who will then starve amongst the masses. They donât care for culture because culture is beneath their desires to consume and grow.
Remmicks hivemind is personalized. The individuals are there, but Remmickâs mind is there with them, twisting every perception.
The Plurbs are not personal, they are branches of a corporation crying out for SYNERGY
In Sinners, it's very explicit that the vampires are attacking the juke because of Sammy and his musical powers to pierce the veil between life and death. However, I can't help but think they were also attracted to Sammy because of his guitar. The themes of evil and evil in religion (in this case the devil, sins, etc) are extremely important and present in the film. "You go dancing with the devil and eventually he's gonna follow you home" is a line that's repeated in relationship to Sammy a couple of times. Another thing about Sammy is that is emphasized is that him playing his guitar is "evil" or "sinful", at least from the perspective of Sammy's own father. Early in the film, the father of the smokestack twins is described as being abusive, cruel, and an evil man. This description is no passing thought, the father is brought up a couple of times later in the film. He was instrumental to the development and character of the twins. At the end of the movie, it's revealed that the guitar the smokestack twins gave to Sammy at the start of the film actually belonged to their father.
So when you take the guitar being seen as evil, the guitar once belonging to the smokestack twins evil father, the line "you go dancing with the devil he's gonna follow you home", and the vampires showing up because of Sammy playing his guitar... i can't help but wonder if the guitar IS truly evil and if the vampires were attracted to it's evilness along with Sammy's ability to bring spirits of the past and future together through playing the guitar. Especially since at the end of the movie Sammy is told by his father AND smoke to get rid of the guitar and Sammy refuses to, clinging onto it even after the hell it's unleashed. Not only that, but he goes out of his way to rebuild the guitar years later. And what would you know- the vampires come back for Sammy, specifically to hear him play that fuckass guitar that he should have gotten rid of eons ago.
The funniest part of Sinners was when the Native Americans just said âyeahhh good luck with thatâ

Women of Sinners - Sinners (2025) dir. Ryan Coogler
Thinking about that âwhite people like the blues just fine, they just donât like the people who make itâ quote from Sinners since it was robbed of the Best Film Oscar.
