Ever wonder what sick, twisted sadist created the burpee? Blame it’s namesake - Royal H. Burpee! A bit about this mad man (courtesy of this longer Huffington Post article): Royal H. Burpee was a physiologist in New York City who invented a much milder (and less tormenting) version of the movement, intending it to be done just four times in a row as part of a fitness test. In fact, he even spoke out against his movement being done in high volumes. Although there are only two remaining copies of Burpee’s thesis, we were able to get the low down on the origins on the burpee from the granddaughter of Burpee himself — Sheryl Burpee Dluginski.

Burpee Dluginski explained that her grandfather was a “fitness fanatic before Jack Lalanne" himself. At a time when exercise science was mostly concerned with measuring the fitness of already fit people, Burpee wanted a simple way to assess the fitness of everyday folks (starting with the new members of the YMCA in the Bronx, where Burpee worked). So in 1939, when Burpee was a Ph.D. candidate in applied physiology at Teacher’s College, Columbia University, he invented an as-yet-unnamed, four-count movement that would provide a quick and accurate way to evaluate fitness. Only later would it evolve into the six-count beast we know today. It’s important to know about the burpee because if you plan on becoming a Spartan, you’re going to be doing A LOT of them! We’re graduating in a few months and it hurts me to know that his baseball career and all of his hard work and dedication to his grades here in the U.S. was all for nothing. Please.

one of my friends is in the middle of this shit right now and it’s terrifying, she said their twitters are getting blocked so they can’t share info, their murder rate is the second highest in the world and none of the murderers go to jail because they’re government supporters, they can’t find basic household items or food in their supermarkets, their economy has plummeted, inflation increased over 50% in the two months since 2014 started, airlines have basically left the country because the govt owes them so much money, they have no access to cars or car parts, they can’t cross any borders because their govt controls them and no one is helping them. it is fucking pissing me off that no one is helping them when they’re asking for it and need it so much. And I am so frustrated that theres not more I can do than share things like this to spread the word, that I just have to hope enough people see it that something gets done.
