Just watched the episode and you are SO incredibly inspiring! You ran a freakin' marathon with a torn meniscus! You never gave up, you were always willing to push yourself and try just a little bit harder, and most of all you just had the most positive attitude through it all. Ignore the hype in the media touting isolation exercises as the quickest path to a gorgeous body. Use classic strength goals to build your body by giving it a worthy challenge!
I just joined a 30-day challenge, and so far the biggest struggle has not been sticking to the eating plan or getting in a workout every day. The biggest struggle has been coming up with clearly defined, measurable, reasonable goals.
Obviously, the goal is to loase weight. But that has been my goal for the past two years and I bounce up and down and all over the place.
I needed a performance goal, but I had no idea where to begin to come up with one. There are general skills goals, like, “I would like to get into krav maga,” or “I would like to go back to dancing ballet.” But again, neither of those is specific.
Doing 10 push-ups is specific. Doing 1 full pull-up is specific. Running a 10-minute mile is specific. No matter how small those goals may seem, they are specific, measurable, and reasonable. And once I’ve gotten to that level, I can move on to the next one.

To many women, a chinup (the underhand-grip cousin of the pullup) seems like the Mount Everest of strength training: impossible to even attempt. To make things worse, there's been a slew of media attention over the past year or so (including in The New York Times) listing reasons women can't do—as in, are not physically capable of doing—the classic, but slightly harder, pullup. As a strength and performance coach, I see self-doubt in the gym. Whenever I mention to my female clients that one of my goals is to help each of them do an unassisted chinup (and, I hope, more than one), many look at me as if I'm setting them up to fail.

Workin’ on that upper body strength
Here is a way to simulate pull-ups for training even if you don’t have the space to install a pull-up bar in your home (or, if like me, you’re scared to try finding the pull-up bar at the gym). This method wraps the bands around staircase spindles, but you can also get a cheap door attachment at a sports store and pull the bands from the door!
