Sveta in Love
Just posted chapter 1 of the Svetlana POV fic I’ve been working on forever! It starts out on the night of Grigori’s funeral and goes both forward and backward from there.
I have recently received my PhD in Svetlana Studies from Insecure-Avoidant Attachment University. My dissertation was on the Mother Wound and the Women of HR 🤪
Anyway, here is Sveta in Love:
https://archiveofourown.org/works/90139046/chapters/239564926
I headcanon that Hayden Pike starts hanging out with the Centaurs at some point so he can spend more time with Shane, but also he genuinely likes the other guys on the team (except Ilya. They will forever be pretend enemies). And eventually Bood or Dysktra or one of the other vets on the team asks Hayden what Shane was like as a captain. Ilya will be super interested to know as well and the rookies will be paying attention also. Hayden doesn’t know he has the attention of the whole Centaurs roster that is present except for Shane who stepped away briefly.
Hayden will get quiet and serious, because the question brings back a lot of nostalgia for him. The good old days before most of the Montreal team revealed themselves to be truly shitty and toxic. “Shane was… Shane was a good captain. The greatest. He led by example. He inspired by just being him. He was never a vibes guy or the guy to run team bonding events, but he made sure they happened. He’ll tell you he was a bad captain because of that, but that man knows how to outsource the things he’s mediocre at and he made sure it got done. He was the best captain I’ve ever had. He was dependable and he never complained. He was the best damn player on the team and he made you believe you could reach his level too if you just worked hard with him. He could say jump and no one would ask how high. We would just jump.”
Hayden would then look up and around at all the Ottawa players listening to him. “Do you know the speech Shane gave before our first cup win? Before game 7 that year? He was sitting in his stall, doing the calming breathing exercises he does, while everyone else was all jittery because we knew it was do or die. And he just stands up suddenly and looks at all of us. Then says ‘I believe in you. I believe in us. I’ve got your back. Do you have mine?’ And he waited till we all gave a positive response back before he said, simply, ‘Let’s go get that Cup.’ There was no dying that day. There was only do like our captain said to do.”
Then Shane will walk back into the space to see everyone stare at him in awe like the first day he walked into practice as a Centaur. He’ll sigh and say, “not again. What happened?”
I love this so much, especially the speech, especially held next to Ilya’s “fuck San Francisco!!!!!!” speech, which is perfect in its own right.
Hypervigilance and anxiety can suck, obviously, but they can also really help us (hello hi this is also me) in a leadership role bc your brain is constantly puzzling out what exactly everyone else wants and needs. A good leader sometimes can give whatever that is to their people, but more often you just know who to ask or which buttons to push to make the thing happen.
And people love it bc we are all are starved for capable leadership in any capacity, and most of us really just want to be seen.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE
Sigh. Not even Hollywood fat. Justice Smith is gorgeous and talented and I’m sure he will be great etc, but a little fat representation would have gone a long way
Also:
1. Fat people are hot
2. Fat people have sex
3. People who are not hot also have sex
4. A social media manager who canonically feels insecure about his body next to all these muscled hockey bros playing a sport he’s always been obsessed with and also has a lifelong health condition that changes the way he approaches the world and the way he perceives others treating him would have been such a rich contrast on screen come on it was RIGHT THERE DAMN IT

reading post-canon hurt/comfort fic and the contrast between the way that fandom ilya takes care of shane with so much tenderness and devotion and words of the most genuine and profound love when he has like, a bad head cold, vs how TLG ilya has not one kind or gentle thing to say after shanes lifelong worst nightmare literally comes true, just jokes (mostly at shanes expense) and sex
It’s literally shocking how different the extrapolation of this character based on the show and the character as depicted in TLG are. They’re unrecognizable, almost opposites. And for once I don’t think it’s fandomification of a character. Or at the very least I know what I like better
This was exactly on my mind when I wrote this fic — I wanted to poke at what being cared for looked like for characters who had both been denied it in different ways.
And Shane really was denied it in TLG. I’m not a hater of that book the way I know some people are, but Shane deserved so much better than what he got.
And Ilya was well set up to give it to him! His emotional IQ is off the charts; we’d just spent three entire books, hundreds and hundreds of pages, seeing him clock the hidden inner lives of half his teammates. Canonically, that guy can read a room (even when he himself is going through a lot of distress). So with someone he loves and cares for more than anyone else? Of course he would see how hard it is for Shane to lose what he lost, my god, the loss was HUGE. Of course would meet that with love and care and tenderness, even though his own emotional turmoil.
And maybe I’m an RR apologist, but I do wonder if by that point in the storyline, she was panicking at how heavy and sad and REAL this smutty hockey romance had turned out to be, and how it was already long as hell and she needed to wrap it up and find a happy ending so help me god, as long as we both shall live, I do, Rhianna, no chairs, amen, goodbye.
Maybe Unrivaled will give us some tender caretaking Ilya and some able-to-accept-help-while-vulnerable Shane? Maybe?
PSA: Just a friendly reminder that whenever you start a creative project, you will invariably hit a phase where the Thing™️ appears horrendous and you start asking existential questions. But if you keep working, it invariably passes and starts to resemble something less like the devil’s vomit. Doesn’t matter if it’s art, writing, or what–this happens repeatedly. Carry on.
what makes me laugh about the shane/ilya/svetlana love triangle is that from shane's end shane is like. :( gosh svetlana is so gorgeous and she's russian and she knows ilya's family and they have so much history and she makes ilya laugh..... how can i ever compare.
and then from svetlana's end it's like. if i end up as ilya rozanov's wag i will have actually hit rock bottom. anytime i close my eyes and imagine the worst version of myself, i see myself endgame hetero married to ilya rozanov. imagine being a rozanova. haha. holy shit. could never be me. if ten years down the line i am in a monogamous marriage with ilya rozanov it means i have completely given up on my life. everytime i try to picture us raising kids together i always see us in the house irina died in. no thanks. nooo thanks. I am good. i am good. he gives good dick though. but shane can have him.
5+5 tag game
I've been meaning to do a rec post for so long now, so thank you to @anincompletelist for the tag and I'm going to do it exactly the same way: sharing five of my own HR fics that I'm proud of + reccing another five that I've enjoyed lately.
Here goes:
My five (and I only have five, so, okay):
1. Shane Hollander Needs a Milkshake (E, 3k)
So Shane's never had a milkshake. Who cares? And why is Ilya so weirdly tender about it?
This was my first fic and I maybe kind of forgot it existed? It’s also the only one that isn't primarily about the women of HR okay nope, my most recent one isn’t about the women either. Ha. What are brains
2. Tough Girl (T, 3k)
If Fabian wouldn't go talk to Ryan after their fight, then Vanessa would do it herself. Was she meddling in their business? Maybe. Did she fucking care? No.
So little love for Tough Guy and Ryan Price in this fandom! I know it isn't the best-written book in the world, but I really genuinely love that character and I hope we at least get a little tiny peek at him in season 2.
3. Weak (M, 21k)
Yuna and Ilya might not be close yet, but she certainly isn’t going to abandon him in some random Ottawa hotel room when he’s sick. And Ilya's powerless against these Hollanders — their earnest kindness, and their insistence on caring about him as though he deserves it.
This was my magnum opus, until the Svetlana character study I'm working on now. The most personal thing I've ever written.
4. Soft Launch (G, 2k)
What if David and Yuna had both gone to the cottage to retrieve that phone charger? What if they crept in very quietly (because silent meditation retreat) and found their son fast asleep on the couch, snuggled up with his arch-rival, Ilya Rozanov?
Inspired by a tumblr prompt -- if I could have one wish in this fandom, it would be more prompts!
5. Signed Up for This (T, 3k)
Half the Centaurs’ roster has the same stupid cold. Ilya has been semi-ironically lecturing all of them about self-care while loudly claiming he never gets sick — Russians do not do this — which Shane finds deeply annoying, especially since he’s already been congested and headachy for nearly a week.
Couldn't resist a little more sickfic as a treat.
Five fics I recommend:
1. ten years and counting by @radialarch
“Shane,” Ilya said. He sounded incredulous. “You think it's hard for me, having a beautiful man suck my cock?” His hand was on Shane’s face now, thumb pressing into the tender place behind Shane’s jaw, tilting his head up to meet Ilya’s gaze. “You think because I don’t get hard that, what, I do not want you?”
I am such an absolute sucker for these two working through "regular people" relationship problems together, and this is just so tender and loving and patient and ughhh everything good in the world. I adore everything by this author and have an embarrassing number of their works bookmarked; this one is truly a work of art.
2. figures of speech by ghosttotheparty
Ilya thinks Shane Hollander's boyfriend is an asshole, and he doesn't think that just because he's head over heels in love.
This is a college AU with the absolute best Ilya-falling-apart scene I have ever, ever, EVER read. And that's saying something because they are my favorite thing, so this is basically my favorite of my favorite things. The writing is absolutely on fire.
3. Skills clinic by @thetimesinbetween
Luca hadn’t been sure he would go through with the plan. He’d talked himself into it and out of it about fifty times. But he's made it this far. He's sitting with Shane Hollander, just the two of them. Now all he needs to do it open his mouth and—
The threesome Luca fic you definitely, definitely need. Just an endless parade of delights of everyone losing their shit about how hot and illicit the whole thing is, with consent for days. Funny and sweet as well as blindingly hot.
4. Deja Vu by @not-close-to-straight
When recently divorced Ilya Rozanov walks into the rink with his twin girls, Shane has to decide if he’s brave enough to risk a second chance on a broken heart, and a rekindled romance with the first and only boy he ever loved.
If you're reading HR fic and you haven't been to Montbonne yet -- it's time. This fic is such a joy and every time a new chapter appears, I squeal like a fool. The world is so incredibly well realized; it genuinely feels real. Gilmore Girls but so much better.
5. Pencil in the Rest by lynadyndyn
Scent patches were mandatory for anyone participating in World Junior's, but a lot of the Russian guys Shane saw in the hotel or around the rink had them loosely attached to their necks or not quite centered over their scent gland. Shane had been on his way to his parents' car when the wind shifted, and he smelled that Rozanov, leaning against the wall and not-at-all-surreptitiously fishing a carton of cigarettes out of his pocket, must have been one of them.
You think you don't like omegaverse? I once thought that too. I am obsessed with this fic and its deep and thoughtful portrayal of gender dynamics, its mention of Margaret Atwood in the tags, literally everything about it. 87k words and I would have been thrilled to read 870000k more.
That's it! Zero pressure to anyone but I will tag a few pals and mutuals that I'd love to see recs from, in any fandom you feel like:
@amieraisposting @anxietycroissant @lqtraintracks @julcheninred @tackytigerfic @vmcgmidlifecrisis @threehams @youweremovingyourfeet @saraluckyj @ilyapasta
For the WIP Word Game
Make
This was fun -- thank you!
From a Svetlana character study, my eternal WIP:
She tries to be gentle, but all those years of lying curdle her voice and turn it sour. She puts more space between them, backing up to the kitchen counter and sliding up to sit on it. Her skintight dress makes it harder than it should be; it's chafing the skin beneath her arms. Suddenly, she’s so tired.
Across from her, Ilya is looking down at the floor, back toward the door. She can feel his mind whirring, probably panicking, in the stillness of the kitchen.
“My love, it is late and I am starving and I need to get out of this stupid dress. Please, put us both out of this misery. I have known for sure since last summer, and suspected long before that."
Still he tries to remain impassive, avoiding her eyes, and Svetlana rolls her eyes fondly. "Honestly I don't know how you thought you could keep it from me. Have you forgotten that I've known you since we were seven years old? I would never tell. I will never tell. You know this. You know you can trust me, and you can tell him too — you do not have to worry. I promise."
He gives her nothing, but glances up again and clears his throat.
“When can I meet your Lauren?” he asks, and she laughs. Dear god, he's so obvious.
“I don’t know, when can I meet your Shane Hollander?”
Ilya groans in frustration, covering, his last-ditch attempt. “Christ, Sveta, stop saying his name like that.”
“I’ll stop when you answer my question,” she says, and then, at long last, she sees him soften. His shoulders drop and he lets out a long breath.
“Montreal plays here next week…” He trails off, but she doesn’t need him to say the words. Finally, finally, here they are.
“And you will get to see him then?” she asks, quiet. An ambulance wails in the distance, and she can hear music from someone else’s party seep through the windows.
“Yes,” Ilya says, his nostrils flaring, not meeting her eyes. He looks so young. “I will get to see him then. Never for long enough.”
“How long has it been going on, Ilyusha?”
He swallows hard. “Summer before rookie season.”
The entire time they’ve been in America. Svetlana nods; she’s not even surprised, somehow, that it’s been so long.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you. I'm sorry— for a lot of things."
“It's all right," she says, and it is. "That’s a long time to want someone. Especially other hockey players. Especially the ones that you pretended not to notice.”
He huffs a sad little laugh. “Yes. Only the one, unfortunately.”
She pets his hair. “Maybe not so unfortunate.”
“I don’t know, it’s very specific. Has to have freckles.”
"I never noticed his," she says. "I like freckles too."
"Really?" he asks, too sharp, picking up on something she hadn't even meant to put down. “You notice his hands, you notice his backshot, you notice how hot he is when he does his dumb yoga — but you never notice the freckles?”
She smiles and holds her arms out, and he comes over to rest in front of her, still sitting on the counter. They're the same height when she's up here; she widens her legs so he can lean between them. She cups his cheek, so familiar and dear to her. “I never did, no. I think you have spent more time looking at that Canadian than I have.”
He hugs her, at an even level now, when she's still sitting on the counter, and she's glad they can still give each other this, at least.
“Japanese-Canadian,” he says quietly, over her shoulder.
“Hm?” She puts a hand on the back of his neck, covering that vulnerable spot, protecting. Jesus, the summer before their rookie season.
“He is Japanese-Canadian. His mother, her family. From Japan.”
Over his shoulder, she smiles. “Oh I see. Pardon me. Your dumb boring Japanese-Canadian.”
“Yes. Thank you for accuracy."
They’re quiet for a moment, and she pulls away so she can examine his face.
“You love him,” she says quietly.
He takes a big steadying breath, and he doesn’t even try to say it isn’t true. Outside, there's more noise, the bass from the music and now a cacophony of honking from the street, Boston drunk and loud on a Saturday night.
“I can’t— I shouldn’t. And I cannot tell him, Sveta.”
Oh, her sweet sad Ilya. “You don’t deny it, then.”
“No, I can’t deny it. I do. I love him.” His voice is soft and sad. She cards her hands through his curls, messing them up. Tears glitter in his eyes, and he tips his head back so they won’t fall, sniffing hard, rolling his eyes at himself.
"Fuck, enough of this," he mutters, and Svetlana’s heart hurts for him, and she gives him an out. She pushes him back, gently, smoothing her hands over his shoulders.
“Yes, enough. I am starving, and I need to take off this stupid dress."
"Starving, huh? You eat food now?”
“I always eat food, don't be ridiculous.” She avoids his eyes.
“Only if you count cigarettes," he scoffs. "You think you are the only one who notices things?"
"Shut up," she mutters.
“Lauren does this to you?”
"Maybe, probably yes," she says, smiling. "Could you make yourself useful for once and go get us something to eat? Or get something delivered? Pizza, whatever, I don't care."

chatgpt is a threat to the symbiotic relationship between fanfic writers and their betas. we are losing our traditions. eradicate the soulless machine and ask your friend who has a full time job and 3 kids to annotate your omegaverse fanfiction like any other responsible adult.
honestly when you remember that tlg was meant to be reid’s last book and that she is experiencing a degenerative disease it all totally totally makes sense and i get really defensive of her. she so clearly cares about this, she so clearly considers it an important part of herself, and of course she wanted to end on a positive note. of course she wanted love to save the day. this is her public work and what she has to ultimately say as an author. like i think in a very real way this is about what she wants to publically leave behind and i think that dimension gets missed so often in critique
