Overlock Stitch by @clothes_reetzy
Damn, that's useful
Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

Zitan wood 紫檀 is an exceptionally dense, slow-growing tropical hardwood (genus Pterocarpus, primarily Pterocarpus santalinus) that is so heavy it sinks in water. Historically prized as the most valuable wood in the world, it has been used for centuries to carve intricate, fine furniture and sculptures.
Its slow growth results in a highly fine, tight grain, making it ideal for the intricate carving favored during the Chinese Ming and Qing dynasties. Because the trees take decades to mature, zitan was historically restricted to the imperial court and wealthy elites.

I have discovered through the wearing of my new hood (from an 1877 pattern) that 19th century winter outerwear does not fuck around
It did not come to play, in any sense of the word
There's a very good chance it was designed by someone who lived through the little ice age, at least in part, and therefore it will keep you WARM
It is actively snowing outside, and I had to take my gloves off because I was sweating. Because the seal around my face with the hood is just that thorough
They say a lot of heat escapes through the top of your head, and whoever drafted this pattern looked at that, cracked their knuckles, and said "not on my watch, dipshit"
(and it will do all of this while being, in my highly subjective opinion, 900% nicer looking than modern winter outerwear)
OP ran into an elderly grandpa selling cherries at the wet market. He was wearing a super sturdy suoyi蓑衣 that he’d woven by himself. a traditional rain cape woven from palm leaves or rice straw, widely used by Chinese farmers in the past to shield from rain.
Chinese netizens also shared the suoyi they have. (cr搬砖弟,愿为云和雨)
