I remember hearing teachers telling us in school that “you won’t always have a calculator” when we asked why we couldn’t use one in school. Now we all have calculators on our phones.
But most people really don’t even know how to use a calculator even though they have it. Or they use it because they are unable do simple math in their head.
Recently a zoomer looked at me like I was a wizard for multiplying 800x3 in my head faster than he could type the numbers into a calculator he already had out. I’m not a mathematician but this isn’t difficult.
I think the younger generation is simply unable to comprehend some of this basic stuff because they never did it the long way. And with AI it’s only going to get worse.
I think we need to remove computers from classrooms.
A computer isn’t something that does all the thinking for you, it’s supposed to do all the menial tasks more quickly.
The purpose of school is to give you the mental tools to know how to think, and comprehend the world. If you have a tool that does everything for then you aren’t learning. If all you know is, simply putting a question into AI then you don’t have anything to offer.
