Discord has lied by claiming that safety was “at the core of everything we do” and “fully integrated into our design process.” This has been done while making deliberate product decisions that defaulted every account setting toward maximum exposure, staffed its most critical safety functions with unpaid volunteers, and built a platform architecture that federal prosecutors have described as “a hunting ground to find, manipulate, and sextort our most vulnerable.”

Consequences of Discord’s design choices include a case in which a 13-year-old Texas girl was sexually assaulted in her home by a predator who groomed her on Discord over several years. Additionally, a 15-year-old boy was coerced into producing explicit material through Discord's messaging system and later died by suicide. Another example includes a 13-year-old who died by suicide after being targeted by the “764” extremist network, which operated openly on Discord servers. Despite direct notice from multiple federal agencies and the OAG, Discord has not changed the design choices that make exploitation possible.

“Discord has allowed and invited all kinds of nihilistic violence and evil. My office is taking action to protect our nation’s precious children from predators,” said Attorney General Paxton. “We live in a time where the dangers children face online have never been greater, and every parent in Texas deserves to know their child is protected.”

Attorney General Paxton is seeking to require Discord to default all safety settings to maximum protection for new accounts, implement age verification pursuant to the Securing Children Online through Parental Empowerment (“SCOPE”) Act, and pay back all revenue derived from its unlawful conduct. The State is also seeking civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation of the DTPA, attorney's fees, and costs. ___________________________________________

Both things can be true at the same time here, discord absolutly failed in its stated safety mission, and the ID thing is also bad idea given all the data breaches that happen.

The TRO requires Discord to immediately reconfigure four key default settings to their most protective state for all Texas accounts: blocking sensitive content rather than merely blurring it, disabling friend requests from “Everyone,” turning off direct-message social permissions, and setting spam filtering to “Filter All.” These settings govern the most common pathway predators use to reach children, and Discord provides its product with them switched off, forcing families to find and fix them on their own.

The court also barred Discord from representing to Texas consumers that its platform is “safe by design,” “safe by default,” that safety is “at the core of everything” it does, or that it enforces a “zero-tolerance” policy, wherever those claims are inconsistent with how the product actually operates. Discord must additionally suspend the automatic 90-day expiration of user violation records and preserve all enforcement and moderation data. It must also file a verified report within fourteen days disclosing its true default settings, the percentage of its workforce devoted to safety, and data on how easily banned users return. ______________________________________________

I don't have a issue with the default being maximum protection and needing to turn that off yourself, not big on requiring ID.

Parents that are going to do that are already subscribed to services like net nanny.

LITERALLY JUST A FUCKING LIAR THAT'S ALL HE DOES

BECAUSE ALL THEY DO IS LISTEN TO WORDS AND PAY NO ATTENTION TO WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING.

1. The court holds Google responsible for statements made by its AI, considering them Google's statements (search engines have limited liability for results in their engine as they're the words of other sites/companies/people), meaning when their AI lies/hallucinates they're liable for the defamation/harm resulting from those statements.

2. Google's defense that customers are generally aware of the lack of reliability and are responsible for fact checking was dismissed. As the court pointed out, that would "significantly diminish" AI Search's stated purpose and it can't be distinguished from Google's business practices/statements as a search tool.

3. Studies have found about 91% of Google's everyday AI responses are accurate, leaving millions of searches per HOUR with potential liability for falsehoods. 56% of correct responses weren't supported by the sources the AI listed. Both of which mean Google is now liable for a LOT more AI "errors."

4. Google was held liable for 80% of court costs in this case and this precedent is expected to reverberate around the world. This is a massive shift from the 3rd-party search provider role Google has previously played and it comes right as they've tied ALL searches to their AI search.
