Fanfic writers are like crows. If you give them treats (comments) they will bring you shiny things (fanfic)
I thought this said cows and thought, "Okay, tell me more..."
Fandom creators are like cows, some people think you can just milk them for content, but actually they need enrichment (comments) and a nice pasture to graze on (kudos/likes) and they secretly also like cuddles (asks about their fic/art)

My favorite āhumans are space orcsā idea is that trope where aliens kidnap some humans for their zoo, except it ends up like Jurassic Park. And the poor Alien Humanologists who were invited to the park are like:
āYou mean you locked up a pack of curious, highly competitive persistence predators with NO enrichment in the enclosure? You FOOLS! If you had bothered to throw a basketball or half a box of Legos in there, KE-X9 would still be alive!
āWell of course they climbed the retaining wall! Did you think to study their evolutionary lineage AT ALL?ā
The humans would find a way to use the basketball and legos to escape. I mean one time a guy somehow escaped from a prison in Mexico without breaking any laws so his escape would be legal so honestly given enough time the Jurassic park situation is inevitable.
Jurassic Park would be awesome, but now that I think about it I also kind of love love the idea of humans as the alien zoo equivalent of those octopuses that climb out of their tanks and wander around taste-testing other exhibits or throwing sub-par shrimp at handlers.Ā
Like theyāre totally unable to figure out whatās happening because the cameras keep going out, but every night things get moved, or stolen, exhibits are disappearing, WHAT IS GOING ON, theyāve moved facilities twice and itās still happening, are they haunted, are the ancestors angry, WHAT IS HAPPENING!?
And then a weary humanologist is allĀ ā⦠your humans are getting outā.Ā
āThat is impossible.āĀ
āTheyāre getting out.āĀ
āThat enclosure is COMPLETELY SECURE.āĀ
āAnd yet somehow theyāre getting out.āĀ
āTHE HUMANS ARE NOT GETTING OUT.āĀ
āOh yeah? I bet you twenty glarks theyāre getting out. Stay after closing time with me and Iāll show you.āĀ
*next day*
ā⦠the humans were getting out.āĀ
ā⦠why did they keep going back in, then?!ā
(In a deeply embarrassed mumble) āThey said they werenāt going to escape until they finished their behavioural experiments. Uh. On us.ā
two things come to mind:
1 - at our own zoos the MOST notorious jail breakers are the orangutans, who exploit all manner of methods, including literal lock picking. One orangutan, Ken Allen escaped several times WHILE THE ZOO WAS OPEN TO THE PUBLIC without getting caught by watching Zoo employees, even when they tried to disguise themselves as tourists to catch him at it. While he was being āsecretlyā surveilled, he managed to escape AND show the other orangutans how to escape. They finally found out he was doing some thought-to-be-impossible rock climbing to escape. To fix it, they brought in a team of human rock-climbers to locate all possible methods of climbing out. So. Humans would absolutely be the worst to try to keep contained. Like,Ā āescape roomsā are currently seen as a fun date idea. Iām sayin.
2 - animals that escape most often return to their ownĀ enclosure (after all thatās where their beds and dinners are, and if the zoo is any good it is the place best suited to their species-specific needs for miles and miles) after they have had sufficient excitement. Ken Allen the orangutan would escape and wander around the zoo looking at the animals like heād bought a ticket. So if the keepers were nice, and formed a bond, and the set up was comfy, once the human knew they could get out if they really wanted, theyād probably go back, depending on how uncomfortable/dangerous the alien environment was.
I mean if they were raised in captivity. Wild-caught humans, all bets are off; depending on age of capture a return home could be a full blown obsession, the sabotage of engineering from mechanisms up to entire facilities is a strong possibility, and they may go on a murder spree with improvised or stolen weapons if desperate.
Humans consider an Escape Room to be a Fun Courtship Ritual
imagine your ex who you haven't seen in a decade (since he stole your car) shows up at your house. in the car. the one he stole from you. it looks like shit. your ex asks you to fix the broken car. then he tells you that the hot girl with him and his buddy (the one that helped him steal the car) is his new girlfriend. she is a member of the royal family and she looks capable of murdering you AND your ex with rage alone. you try to say hi. she does not say hi. no one admits it out loud, but you get the feeling that they're all running from the cops and they all want to hide out in YOUR house.

a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"

Sometimes you hear a song and a fic pops into your head full formed. This is a trap. The fic may be fully formed in your brain, but you still Have to write it down. This is an important step that most people forget about.
when the song tackles you to the ground and starts beating the ever loving shit out of you
Realizing the writing doesn't have to be done alone and is often more fun and more engaging when you're doing it with friends is a life changing experience.
I don't mean co-writing either. I mean having a friend or two who you talk through plot ideas with, who you bounce ideas off of, who you trust to tell you if something doesn't work.
Nothing is created in a vacuum and nothing can be created alone. Sharing drafts and ideas is a vital part of the creative process and it's a really fun part too.
they should normalize saying "I'm thinking of you fondly but don't have much to say and frankly I don't even really want to talk rn but you have appeared in my thoughts and it's nice"
STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES Season 3, Episode 23: All Our Yesterdays
#every time someoneās like āthey should fuck about itā i just think#or maybe bones should stop using racial slurs & ranting about spockās culture & spock getting angry is really truly about racism?#the insistence that itās about harmless ust filled mutual banter and spock must largely enjoy it because heās not 100% helpless & passive#and if he seems angry or upset about open racism it canāt be that he is actually angry or upset to hear that from a friend#and it canāt be that star trek: the original series 1966-1969 putting all that in the mouth of an old-fashioned aging white southern doctor#was trying to say anything about the entitled patronizing racism directed at biracial people by their own friends and in their workplaces#is just so strange and baffling to me. [ @anghraine ]
The problem is - if you do weight it more towards the āstraight-up racial slursā end of the spectrum rather than the ābanter between friends who consensually use the V-word and the H-word to affectionately rib each otherā, then I donāt know how you find your way to a true Kirk/Spock friendship in that situation. Because that is a profoundly toxic work environment that Kirk every day of that five-year mission has the power to put an end to and doesnāt. (Whatās the point of white-knighting by shutting down random bigoted Navigators-of-the-Week if youāre going to smile fondly and not say a word when your CMO regularly says even worse for the whole bridge crew to hear?)
I agree that the racism is there and visible (not to mention sexism, given that Spock took on certain traits of the lost female Number One).
And if it were just Spock and McCoy in their own storyline, I could absolutely interpret them as having more of a Defiant Ones kind of journey, of starting off as truly antagonistic and working through that to mutual respectā¦but what I donāt know how to reconcile is how all of that could unfold in the workplace under Kirkās watch, if weāre genuinely to see him as a friend to and supporter of Spock.
I donāt think itās difficult to reconcile at all, for the reason that a ⦠lot of the usual Bones apologetics aggressively ignore: the escalations to clear racist/xenophobic vitriol from crew members, including McCoy, overwhelmingly occurs when Kirk is absent or unconscious. Heās genuinely surprised as well as appalled when Bones and Scotty go after Spock in āSpectre of the Gunā and is about to jump down their throats when Spock stops him. But Kirk wasnāt on the Galileo 7. He wasnāt there when Bones went after Spock for not caring enough in āCourt Martialā and āTomorrow is Yesterday.ā He wasnāt there when Bones dressed Spock down in āBread and Circuses,ā or when Bones refused to even try to understand Spockās reaction to 400 Vulcans dying or to grant him the dignity he requests in āThe Immunity Syndrome,ā or during Bonesās condemnations of Spock in āThe Paradise Syndrome,ā or āThe Tholian Web.ā
Kirk was asleep during the particularly unprompted, unjust screed against Spock in āRequiem for Methuselah.ā He wasnāt there when Bailey tried his hand at microaggressions in āThe Corbomite Maneuverā or when even Uhura attacked Spock in āThe Man Trap.ā Heās not there in the giffed scene above in āAll Our Yesterdays.ā He doesnāt seem to know about Bonesās absurd recurrent theory that Spock is a power hungry schemer plotting against Kirk to seize authority; it never gets mentioned around him. The usual insistence that all three are pretty much always together and, deep down, on the same page impoverishes a lot of the showās themes IMO.
Bones and the others donāt have to be scheming villains in this; possibly they donāt even think about why their restraint so quickly erodes and their usual plausible deniability escalates so much when the boss isnāt around. I think the rest of the crew responds to Stiles ranting right there on the bridge the way they do not because they necessarily think heās a monster in some way thatās totally distinct from the similar treatment of Spock on the regular, but because of the time and place. They think heās an asshole, yes, but even more that heās an idiot.
I think the idea in all this is intended less as a referendum on specific individuals tbh (for better and worse), and more to make a point about how workplace racism works. Spock isnāt someone who is going to see logic in telling Kirk about this, and doesnāt. A single good boss doesnāt fix widespread bigotry (though theyāll act when they do see it). Bones is not unusually bigoted; his bigotry is entirely ordinary in Spockās life, even from those with real affection for him (like his parents and multiple friends, of course including Bones himself).
Spock is visibly shocked that Kirk, already well established as a close friend, would stick up for him in that way and swing his authority behind doing so, pretty obviously because no one has ever done so before. It seems the first time a Stiles situation has involved both Spock and Kirk specifically - Spock is genuinely stunned by both Stiles and Kirk in BoT, but the other crew clearly understand that Stiles is digging his own grave by doing this in front of Kirk. And the two times Kirk obliviously uses (however blatantly insincere) racism as an SOS signal because heās so sure Spock rightly believes Jim Would Never, it specifically bothers Spock to hear that from him; Kirk occupies a unique position in Spockās life as someone he can see as safe, not just generally but specifically in the context of Spockās experiences as a biracial person, not because heās a flawless ally but because heās a course-correcting one.
But once you start noticing the difference in tenor between how Spock is treated when Kirk is present and functional vs when Kirk isnāt immediately in the picture, itās pretty much impossible to unsee.

A companion as no other immortal had ever been.
"Why is Armand attracted to that old man? He is old???" Is a very funny reaction I've seen people have to Devil's Minion.
Because on a surface level, it does seem thematically interesting. You could talk about vampires forever looking the age that they died, aging, and the natural fetishization of aging an immortal being might have and how that might present, especially in a character like Armand etc etc etc. But also, there are people who want to fuck Daniel Molloy right now.
Like actual normal aged mortal humans. Most of them are significantly younger than 72 year old actor Eric Bogosian. Like ok you can't really argue that Armand wanting to fuck that old man is weird when a large chunk of people came out of IWTV thinking "I want to fuck that old man"
Maybe the old man is fuckable
