Here's a peek at a favorite sequence from The Adventure Zone: The Eleventh Hour GN: the mine deaths!!

I think the initial script pass started out at 2-3 deaths? But somewhere in revisions I think I asked something like 'is it cool if I try coming up with a bunch of gruesome alt deaths (most of which were in the original podcast!) to make a really stupid joke about time passing/ mounting disasters using the GN chapter formatting' and the whole team was like 'yeah sure, go for it!' which is how we went from chapter 8 to chapter 108 to convey the many, many times the trio beefed it. and, coincidentally, why so many of these books end up longer than originally planned. Good collaborations are rare, and incredibly funny collaborations that are a treat to be a part of from start to finish are the rarest! A treasure!

i Spy treats to look out for: 'live, laugh, leave'; a non-potable fountain of acid; a sign that warns you exactly what's going to happen; a bunch of deaths from the podcast that we couldn't otherwise fit into the book.

I think some eagle-eyed tumblr readers may have spotted the static when book 6 came out, but I'm still really pleased with it as a narrative device so you have to look at it again!

was thinking about establishing shots for comics feedback sessions so I wanted to share some from ones from TAZGN6- the suffering game- plus a sneak peek at one in TAZGN7!

It was a fun challenge to return to the Wheel of Misfortune three times, and have each establishing shot feel slightly Worse. I knew I wanted to change the wheel a little bit- tipping the orientation up and giving it a more menacing color palette each time- but I also wanted the pages to convey the feeling of increasing tension/ losing hope. So the first encounter's establishing page is pretty open and the panels have a lot of breathing room; the second is more densely packed and jumps right into the spins, with smaller panels to help it feel a little more quickly paced, and the third and last time they encounter the wheel, they get a totally different establishing shot that reads much more like a boss-battle-face off. Things are tough all over!!

Here's one of my many favorite pages from The Adventure Zone Graphic Novel #3: Petals to the Metal! This was a case where I asked the team if they were ok with me adding a bunch more pages & panels to make room for some goofy dates & give Hurley & Sloane's first kiss time to breathe and everyone was like absolutely yes, so thanks, team.

"Carey did you just want to make us look at their kiss" NO!!! It's still a brag but a different one: I WANT TO MAKE YOU LOOK AT THE DENSITY OF BG JOKES IN THE DATING MONTAGE:

Captain Captain Bane is a Jeff Angel fan- but please also appreciate fanta-sea kayak rental. "fantasy" jokes were one of my go-tos, so please keep an eye out them in every book! Please don't ask how they met, captain, be cool.

Green neighborhood initiative/ planting party is a LITTLE mean but please appreciate fanta-seeds.

OBVIOUSLY you sometimes have to go on a date to the hardware store, where the hardware is for very specific uses only, but please also appreciate 2-for-1 fanta-spree deals.

WOW! YAY! If only there were a book coming out in under three months where you might just see Hurley & Sloane again... maybe TAZGN7, Story and Song... on July 14th?! maybe so!!!! you'll have to read it and find out!!
