Milton Charles was the accomplished designer and artist behind the cover of Flowers in the Attic. Charlesās idea was to create a die-cut window that would show a single character on the front cover at first glance, and then would reveal a cast of characters behind the āhouseā when the reader turned the page to what is sometimes called the āstepbackā. The contrast in the cover between the stark, graphic, almost secessionist-style house ā resplendent in foil ā and the almost photo-realistic portrait of the family (illustrated by Gillian Hills) is both queasy and intriguing. It also cleverly evokes the narrative without being too explicit ā had he shown the whole family in the attic on the cover in the first place, the magic would have been completely lost. The books that followed directly after Flowers employed Charlesās established template ā stark imagery with foil and a die-cut revealing photo-realistic illustration of the bookās characters. (x)

what is your fav vca novel?
i think iām gonna go with flowers but my sweet audrina is a very close runner up
Definitely āMy sweet Audrinaā. I found Flowers in the Attic a bit heavy in its book format (I'll always recommend the 1987 adaptation over anything else, even over the book), and the Casteel saga might be close for its plot, but... I don't know, My sweet Audrina makes me more complete and has characters that you really love-hate (god, Damien Adare). It's authentic, morbid (Well, like everything from VC Andrews)... and special.
At least for me, of course.

i want to write my own southern gothic novel again
been way too long since iāve posted on here but is anyone planning on reading the biography that neiderman keeps hyping? iām on the fence about it
i havenāt read the ruby/landry series but is it one of the better ones??? should i check it out????
Update: Iāve read Ruby....itās fairly average to me...but Iām hoping to get more invested as the series goes on
heaven and i are so similar, we let our daddy issues manifest and put us into terrible situations that couldāve been avoided

if ive learned one (1) thing from VC Andrewsā books, itās that men are Vile, Disgusting creatures and that no matter how sweet and loving they seem at first, they will always leave you feeling like youāre nothing
all (authentic) vc andrews novels are captivity novels but the only thing forcing the characters in place are their families. even in flowers in the attic, the infamous ālocked in the atticā book, where the captivity is the most obvious, they have several opportunities to escape, and at one point discover they can escape at any time, but they choose not to out of loyalty to their mother. the two parts of vc andrews novels are realizing that theyāre captive and realizing that theyāre not captive.
