"The High Court on Wednesday [Kenya, 05/20/2026] ruled that refusing to amend gender markers in official identification documents of transgender persons breaches the constitutional rights. ...The judgement capped years of legal battles by Ms. Mbugua, a transgender rights activist, whose fight with State institutions dates back more than 10 years."

helen walne photos that make me feel a certain way
Eryka Caldwell is a back trans woman who was murdered by her partner in her apartment last Sunday, and the story is getting a fraction of the attention that the murder of Juniper Blessing did. The police had already been called several times about her partners violence before her murder and did nothing, and she deserves the same outrage and mourning as Juniper got, and every one of our murdered trans siblings deserves. Trans women of color are more likely to be the victims of murder than any other group of queer people, and they need our solidarity, protection and support.
Caldwell’s boyfriend, 38-year-old Jonathan Fernandez, has been charged with murder.
Her family has a gofundme, please donate to them if you can so that they can transport her back home for her funeral.

4/5/15 Nepomorpha (Aquatic Bugs)-Gelastocoris oculatus (Big-Eyed Toad Bug) 8mm
A common, though well-camouflaged bug of muddy freshwater shorelines, walks, or sometimes, hops. Toad Bugs are able to run and jump to catch prey or escape from predators.
Adults prey on small insects and spiders, using raptorial front legs. Nymphs prey on eat small insects and are highly cannibalistic.
Adults overwinter under debris and rocks. Eggs are laid between algal mat fibers above shorelines.
acorn weevils, shockingly, want acorns to feed on and lay eggs in, and so are more often seen in late summer and early autumn, when mature acorns are everywhere. so what was this Curculio venosus doing out so early on a practically fruitless oak? i don't know, and judging by its expression i don't think it does either

giant isopod is like what if magical creatures were real but just out of your reach. what if there was an animal that was generally really small but we made ONE that was actually the exact size you have dreamed about for it to be a normal house pet. but you both evolved to be unable to survive in each other’s environment. even experts (aquariums) struggle to conduct an environment in which they can survive and thrive, so you may never see one even behind glass. they may as well be unicorns. just one of the many ways life taunts me
Today's wasp of the day is the thistledown velvet ant (Dasymutilla gloriosa)!
Credits: photo 1, photo 2
Also known as the glorious velvet ant, this tiny ambling squeaker has confused scientists with her fashion choices. At first it was believed that she was mimicking the fruits of the creosote bush (Larrea tridentata), which are also common around her stomping grounds. Turns out that she's been wearing white millions years before the plant arrived on its landmass. Now it is believed that her white fuzz simply helps her keep cool— which isn't as exciting of an answer but still an interesting look into how organisms adapt to living in the desert.

Rabbit botfly, Cuterebra buccata, Oestridae, Diptera. Found in the United States.
Bot flies are parasites of mammals; the rabbit botfly, as its name suggests, parasitizes rabbits specifically. Female botflies will deposit their eggs either directly onto the host or on a vector insect which then visits the animal and unwittingly deposits them. After hatching, the larvae burrow into the skin of the host and feed on living tissue. Over a period of weeks, the larvae mature, eventually emerge from the host, and drop to the ground where they burrow into the soil to pupate.

**Photo 9 shows the larva of a related species, Cuterebra fontinella, the mouse botfly. I couldn’t find a photo to share legally of the rabbit botfly larva, but they look pretty much identical.
