The cyclops, Polyphemus, kills members of Odysseus’ crew because he returns home and finds them in his *house* eating his food. He’s a monster. Odysseus returns home and finds the suitors in his house, eating his food and trying to marry his wife and so he kills them all. He’s a Hero. For some reason the moral value of their actions is solely dependent on the perception of their character and therefore Odysseus and Polyphemus should both objectively be considered monstrous or heroic. In this essay I will

polyphemus and the suitors are both in violation of xenia, from opposite sides of the guest-host relationship–polyphemus, the host who murders his guests instead of offering hospitality, and the suitors, guests who abuse the host’s hospitality, try to force his wife to marry one of them, and even plot to murder his son.

if the suitors had only been there for one day, and only wanted food and shelter, odysseus would have been portrayed as monstrous for slaughtering them.

of course, applying human customs to polyphemus is not fair–xenia is not part of his culture in the first place–but that otherness only reinforces his monstrosity in the eyes of odysseus and his crew.

that said, i think it’s safe to say that odysseus has never been received as a morally pure hero, even in the odyssey itself. after all, we are told from line one that he’s polytropos, and we are given many examples of his deceitfulness throughout the narrative.
