When we started the comic we were really keen on celebrating Billyâs Jewish rootsâa Hanukkah comic was a MUST. At first we thought about telling the story of Teddyâs first celebration with the Kaplans but the idea of Tommy as the outsider struck like lightning and we couldnât let him go. For context: this takes place in the pocket of time after Childrenâs Crusade when Billy [spoilers] gives up superhero life for awhile.

Happy Thanksgiving to all our American followersâwe hope youâre staying safe and socially distanced! We had a discussion as to whether or not to do a Thanksgiving comic. Would Billy and Teddy even celebrate it, given the holidayâs rosy (horrifically inaccurate) colonialist lens? We ultimately decided it seemed like something theyâd observe (Teddy will NEVER turn down pie), but with mindfulness and history in mind. So this year, we encourage you to decolonize your Thanksgiving: - Research whose land you are living on at Native-Land.ca or www.whose.land - Read about the true history of Thanksgiving. Happy Halloweek! Billy and Teddy are two HUGE nerds who dress up in costume for work and LOVE IT, so Halloween is their jam. (Though we think Teddy is actually 97% TERRIFIED of spooky stuff and he may or may not make it through this haunted house in one pieceâŚ) BETWEEN THE PANELS:Â
- Billy is wearing HULK HANDS (WITH REAL HULK SOUNDS!!!!)Â - The Selfie is 100% an idea we LOVED from Kieron Gillen & Jamie McKelvieâs 2013 Young Avengers run. Check the OG out here. - We decided to make up our own usernames for the Young Avengers instead of using the ones in the books. (Teddy loved Space Jam as a kid and never grew out of it, change our minds.)
TOMMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Our FIRST GUEST STAR! Also, Billy is doing what we affectionately call the ânerd gush.â Which means talking about something you like a lot⌠fast until your friends get on board and FINALLY WATCH AVATAR. âââââââ- We wanted to take a second to say hi. Hi!Â
Weâre Baz (art) and Riley (the typing part). Weâre two Canadian nerds who have been friends since 6th grade and have spent our friendship obsessing over movies and comics together like only nerds know how. (See Billy above.)Â
Itâs important for us to clear this up before any plot happens: Idiot Boyfriends will draw from, build on, and reference the comics, but it doesnât take place in Earth-616 or any of the existing Marvel universes. Timeline-wise, itâs *mostly* after Style vs. Substance and before Teddy is the King of Spaceâ˘. Billy and Teddy are in their early twenties, working with the Avengersâour version. Think of it as a kind of an AU where everyone is an action figure fresh out of the box.Â
Weâre making Idiot Boyfriends because: 1) Weâve always wanted to collaborate but never have⌠Unless binge-watching X-Men: TAS while crushing takeout during sleepovers is a project. 2) We both wanted to get practice in our mediums AND have fun making stuff. 3) Wiccan and Hulkling have been some of our Marvel favs for YEARS.
Thereâs a funny place where you donât own characters (no copyright infringement intended!!!) but you love them intensely, and it feels like a little bit of them belong to you. Thatâs the snow globe where the comics take place.Â
