do you think we should be worried that andi mack will also be taken off disney plus since they're taking off so many shows and a lot of andi macks eps were never on it to begin with?
do i think there's a chance that the rest of andi mack could be removed from the platform? yes. do i think it's something you should be actively worried about? not really. which is to say, with most of the episodes already missing from the platform - does it really even matter if the rest stay on or not? if anyone wants to actually watch the show, their choices are already limited to using a pirate link or purchasing the episodes on amazon.
realistically, there are two reasons why disney is starting to remove content from their platform: the first is that they don't want to continue paying residuals to actors and other creatives who worked on the shows if the shows aren't generating new viewers/revenue. this is, unfortunately, very common and one factor into the current writers' strike. platforms release shows, fail to promote them, and then try to erase them - which ultimately penalizes the people who worked on them.
the other reason is because even though most of the content being removed have been released as "disney plus originals" - most of them seem to have been produced by or in partnership with other companies, and then distributed by disney. (diary of a future president is a great example of this! it was produced by cbs but distributed by disney). this means that disney likely does not own the full rights to some of these titles, and would have to pay more to continue to host them. we see this all the time, with every streamer. it's why something will leave netflix one month, then pop up on hulu the next. whoever pays to distribute the title gets it, and if it's not generating enough money for the company - they'll likely let it go, at least for now.
it's also why we don't often see netflix originals leaving netflix - because even though basically everything on there is made in partnership with other production companies, that's a part of netflix's core strategy. they care too much about their original back catalogue to let those titles go. disney... doesn't. disney knows its biggest draws aren't their current original series - it's their bigger titles. the animated films, marvel, star wars, etc... and they don't have to pay anyone to keep those titles on their service because they own them completely.
this also isn't entirely new. it's just the first time we're seeing them actively remove stuff from the platform. but there have been plenty of titles missing from their catalogue all along for the same reasons. the earlier disney channel original series such as "the famous jett jackson" and "the jersey" are good examples of this. shows that were produced by outside companies but distributed by disney which, for one reason or another, disney has not deemed worth what it would cost them to get the streaming rights.
the good news - regarding andi mack - is that it was made in-house, by disney. the production companies they partnered with are standard disney based ones. so between that and the fact that they aren't having to pay that many residuals to the cast/crew considering they only have like half of the episodes, it's probably not costing them very much to keep it around. the bad news is that because they only have half of the episodes, the show likely doesn't generate that much traffic for them and they may eventually view that as a reason to remove it completely. there's really no way of knowing.
andi mack is small potatoes in the eyes of disney either way. the vast majority of people now working at the streaming service weren't even there when the renewal campaign was going on, so they don't know the impact of the show or its potential. it's never going to get the treatment it deserves. it's unfair to the fans and even more so to the people who worked on the show who get paid significantly less than they deserve because all of the episodes aren't available.
and with the context of the writers strike, that should really be the focus here. the cost cutting of streaming services and networks are directly impacting writers and creatives across the board. there's been a lot of buzz about the fact that disney happens to be removing several queer shows in this batch - which, yes, sucks from a representation standpoint... but it sucks even more for the real-life queer people who worked on those shows who will now be losing money because their show is being erased, and they will no longer receive residuals from it.
so yeah. whether andi mack is impacted more than it already has been or not, get mad at disney. and all of the streamers. support the people who make your favorite content, both on screen and behind it. support writers.
